I need lyrics for So Black So Bright - at least "down" and
birds and the bees"

Please.

She used to have them up as images on her site, but she took them down.

Hey hey hey ~

I too am wanting and needing lyrics for the songs on Kim's cd - not sure what's she's saying in so many places - I think it's a good way to get people to listen over and over (and over and over) though. Beautiful stuff, love her. You can read my cdbaby review of the cd here: http://cdbaby.com/cd/kimtaylor .

Cheers,

I have no idea what she's singing on SBSB half the time, her diction is almost as bad as Karin's. biggrin.gif

Been playing this a lot the past week (thanks Shawn!):

I wish I had been, too. But it didn't work out. Bad day at work and family obligations conspired against me.

So Black, So Bright--Lyrics

So Black, So Bright w/m kim taylor 2002

Maude has got old wringed on her fingers
Tells her story gives you diamonds free
Little of this, of that and a scent off her tangerine tree

She spoke grace, walked her shoes, talked for miles
Spoke and your face would brighten, smile
Stars came down, tried to savor her skin
The moon went round, letting demons in

What if I’d had my pockets runs dry
What if I saw my first child die
What if I weren’t all right
What if I held the night
So black, so bright

Maude would lose track of summer and winter
She’d pour her corn whiskey back, up across skies
Thread her days, her clothes, gave up blind beautiful eyes

Drip, Drop w/m kim taylor 2002

Drip, drop fly by mother
I’m a land, a soft hand
A warm flow
Flip, flop, I’m a lover
Silent, rolling man goes on and on and on
And I slide for cover
I’ve got nothing, something, everything

Trip, trop he’s above her
Haggling, waggling wag down slow
Clip, clop I don’t say a thing
A thing I’d say I need to go

Myself Enough w/m kim taylor 2002

Falling down that boy has come around
I woke up to see him smiling down
Could not find a reason
Could not see a way
Could not bring myself enough to say, hey hey hey
I give him a glance
Hope to see him different
I sing him a dance
Make it all flow fine
Would not be a reason
Would not be a way
Would not be myself enough to say, hey hey hey
All these words might help to bind the distance
That keeps you from me
I hear God’s not fighting my resistance
Don’t put your faith in me

Griffin’s Lullaby w/m kim taylor 2002

Baby of all I’ve learned, I’ve read
I’ll show it to you
Baby of all I’ve heard, I’ve said
I’m telling you true
I hope you fly
That your mad ache would rise
And the lot for your life
To be sweet and ripe
And what you can’t stand to say
You’d kneel to pray (everyday)
Baby I’d sell the rain, run wild
Oh to love you good
Don’t wanna lose my sense, my stride
Oh but maybe I should

Wrecked w/m kim taylor 2002

What’s wrong you said
Baby i’ts just what I heard
I’m aching for a little light
in spite of all this grief I’ve learned
And there’s nothing left
Is that blessing or is that curse
I am warming up forgiveness
Pouring it on myself first
***I’m wrecked, wounded, left but all right
***Worried for the news and all the worse that we try
***A little hate will drive this for a long, long ride
I’ve been stuck here something’s gotta give it’s bound to go
And these skies hang over all my highs, all my lows
And if hope is a feathered flight then swoop bird down from them trees
There is freedom in my appetite, vision in my sympathy

I knew that preacher was right
There I go down the aisle (twice)
We sang blessed be the tie that binds
Blessed be the tie that blinds
Blessed be the tie that binds

There’s a warm night, a sorry I ever had to see this thing
Someone’s misguided notion of letting freedom ring
Oh but deep inside the waters wide I ebb and flow
I hestitate
I am putting off tomorrow, baby I’m gonna wear you today

Conversation with God w/m kim taylor 2002

She asked me how did you get yourself into such a bind
I felt her step, felt her creeping up behind
One more night like this, I’ll lose my mind
I’m sleeping with the dead, doing liquor, lead and cigarette time

I had this conversation with God
We stayed up all night, cried, giggled a lot
Oh isn’t that odd

I’m low, I hide, I fight myself with my black cat glare
Listen to me listening, you, you, you weren’t there
One more night like this I’ll find my way
Come back see a different girl, a brand new day

Long is The Day w/m kim taylor 2002

Softly the ocean
I’m coming home soon
The sea’s not wide enough
To fill this wound
And long is the day
Long is the day
Love, take this madness
That sleeps with me
Maybe you are stronger
Than ever I’ll be
And long is the day
Long is the day

Whaddya Say w/m kim taylor 2002

You’re so sweet, I hope you stay
You’re the right man for me anyday
I could hold you right, come along tonight
you rock my world
I could make you smile
Just give me awhile
you rock my world
Had a man that would make me stumble
I had a man and he could never ever be pleased
What do you say, what do you say to that

Oh you beside me
When I’m sitting at home nursing my fears
Oh your fingers they find me
God it’s dark, getting late
Light a candle
Wait
For the moths in my soul
Have gotta burn

Oh so black, so bright
what do you say . . .

Birds and the Bees w/m kim taylor 2002

You know better than to leave me straddled and lame
Is that romance, your way of making different same
Oh the leaves are dry, leaves are tumbling down
Hell it’s not July, maybe I should stick around
Goodbye reason, goodbye the one thing I needed to say
I’m giving it all to this east-side lover
Hoping I, hoping he bombs away
Oh the leaves are dry
leaves are tumbling down
Hell, I’m not that shy
Maybe I should settle down
Oh oh oh oh oh oh take it easy . . .
You were up all night, Had a fight
Swallowing up fears in your wine, girl
You gave a last rite, a cold night
Wasn’t there a thing I could do?
Oh and you could be the devil
(At least his god child)
C’mon hit me, save me, feed me to the birds and the bees
Oh . . . take it easy
You get it on, you get it on, you get it on child
Is that right now . . . is that right
(A week of that and you’ll be fine)

Down w/m kim taylor 2002

This weathered night has fattened clouds
Run around, reckless waves
Your a fool to think I’ll hang around like a starve-eyed stray
Baby I see this mess as the birth of you
And if they won’t, you don’t digress
I believe in you
You should know by now
They’ve had all that figured out
All that pulling down
Maybe you reached yourself, maybe you dug right past
Seems I spin the same mistakes or the wheels won’t last
**chorus**
I’m arrested, i confess that nothing makes much sense at all
You get dressed, baby I’ll call
Take me out, this big red town is needing us to come around
All this pulling makes me fall behind . . .

Hey . . . hey . . . hey (fat albert style . . . )

Well. I'm crazy tired but I'm showing up. It's quite a wonderful
thing to own your own coffee shop. I'm really
very addicted.

I feel a caffeine crash coming on soon . . .

So I've not got anything earth shaking to say. I'm just making sure
you all are alive and well. I did want to
let you know that there are a couple of new Mp3's up on kim-taylor.net.
One of them is the title track from a very small
unreleased indie film called My Brother's War. A good friend of mine
was scoring the film and asked me if I had any
good anti-war songs. So I lied and said yes and went home and wrote
one as quick as I could. Being the opportunist I am and all . . .
The song is called No War. ( I mean really? how clever can one get?)
Take it down and pass it around: http://www.kim-taylor.net/mp3free.html

And if you happen to be in the Chicago, IL part of the world then do
come out to Schubas Tavern this Saturday night (the 21st). I'll be
opening for Anne Heaton and her band. Then back on the road with OTR:
www.kim-taylor.net/kttourin'.html

I'm having an absolute ball being on the road and meeting so many
crazy, insane, highly-intelligent folks. One of my favorite
memory the club in Portland, Oregon: The Doug Fir. It's like Quentin
Tarantino meets Ikea. I don't even know what the hell that means but
there you have it. That's what it was like.

Be well. Come to a show.

anybody got lyrics to Telephone? there are a few spots that I can't figure out.
Trudes
Hi B.S.

I have been tryin g to find out as well.
I wish Kim would post the lyrics to her whole EP album.
Anyway, here's what I decifer. The blanks are the real rough spots.
Let me know if you hear it differently.

Telephone
w/m Kim Taylor

We were almost to ______Avenue
You were holding me, I was holding you
And with detours on highway 59
I was running late, you were killing time
I was given more than I meant to bear
And you never asked what had happened where
I went out that night, sat down by the sea
Wished a wish for you
Wished a wish for me
In the simple joy, simple dream
Lose your simpleness for complexity
I am underdressed, I am inbetween
In my Sunday best, god watching me
God watching me
God watching me
I had lost my faith, you were stuck between
Being there for you, being here for me
And the ____mistake in my darkest _____
You were thinking I’d be your everything
In the simple joy, simple dream
Lose your simpleness for complexity
I am underdressed, I am never home
You were sitting next to your telephone
To your telephone, to your telephone
To your telephone
And my mother taught and my father said
How the girls would act
With the bible read
I was hoping I could just talk to you
Maybe over drinks, ask me what is new
I am doing fine, I am wide awake
And the love I had is now some mistake
I went out tonight, sat down by the sea
Wished a wish for you, wished a wish for me
In the simple joy, simple dream
Lose your simpleness for complexity
I am underdressed, I am inbetween
In my Sunday best, god watching me
in my simple joy, simple dreams
Lose your simpleness for complexity
I am underdressed, I am never home
You were sitting next to your telephone, to your telephone, to your telephone
beforesunrise
ooh, interesting! thanks for the reply...sorry I didn't see it till now!

some of the things I've heard (or wanted to hear) are a little different. I originally heard "it was your simpleness for complexity" but now I hear "lose your simpleness". interesting how that changes the meaning. also, I hear "and the love I have is not some mistake". hmmm! and "I was given more than you're meant to bear". the mistake part is still unclear, (maybe "the thing at stake"?), and I hear "you know talk is cheap" after it. wish I knew what it is!
Trudes
Hey,

I like 'the thing at stake'....and 'talk is cheap'...that seems to fit, sorta!

Can you get the name of the Avenue at the very beginning?

I guess it could be 'not some mistake' as well as 'now some mistake'...either fits.

Maybe someday she'll tell us!
beforesunrise
on the EP recording I thought it was Pritchard or Richard but on a live recording it sounds like What Should...LOL.
I hope too that she'll tell us someday!
Trudes
Since the title of this thread is Kim Taylor.....
how about listing your favorite songs of hers?
I have both her albums and have heard her on a few audience recordings when she opened for OTR.
I have to say my very favorite song is 'The Drive'.
(She hasn't sung this one in her opening shows enough)
I also love 95, Down and No War (MP3 of the month).

I'm hoping for a new album from her soon, eh?
Trudes
Does anyone know if 'Griffin' is Kim's son's name (as in Griffin's Lullaby)?
beforesunrise
great idea!
my favorites in no particular order:
Telephone
Myself (Enough)
Griffin's Lullaby
What Do You Say
So Black, So Bright
Birds and the Bees
Bruised Girl (is it called Bruised Girl or Bruise Girl?)
I Came To

edit...
just now I was wondering who Griffin is too.

She did "The Drive" at the Indy show smile.gif

She told me Friday that she plans a new album for the spring. A majority of what she did in the performance was new to me (not on either album, not on the prior solos shows I've seen, not in the two openings with OtR I've seen). Some very good stuff. You'll be able to hear, and hopefully see it soon . . .

"41 dogs" from this show is amazing. josh is making faces and playing drums w/his hands, no sticks, amos is thumping on bass, ric's guitar is spooky and kim just nailed it (and she had a pretty rough cold). "clap hands" kicks ass too.

this boot is so good she ought to release it. as is.

Bill,
You're so right. That was an excellent performance of 41 Dogs.
Reminded me a little of Massive Attack with some Jane's Addiction thrown in.
Sweet.
On a few of the boots I've listened to Kim does some really tricky things with her guitar, as well. And I love Amos' bass.
Griffin's Lullaby is another fav that she hasn't performed too much this tour.
I like her Schuba's July 4th 2004 show that was offered on EMusic

Bruised Girl (is it called Bruised Girl or Bruise Girl?)
*

It's just "Bruise"--when I did the York St. Café recording, this wasn't on her setlist, so I was guessing at the title. I originally heard the line as "You are a Bruise Girl, a bruise" but of course it's really "You are a bruise, girl, a bruise" Silly noun-in-direct address will get you every time wink.gif Anyway, I changed the art to reflect my new opinion of the title before I gave it to Kim, and she confirmed that was right. If you need/want a corrected version of the back tray, it's here:
www.users.muohio.edu/fentonsm/

This tune was much heavier at Southgate, BTW--electric guitar and drums. One of the more rockin' tunes, actually. Me likey!

On a related note, I'm pretty sure now that it should be "95 Things" even though she introduces it as "95" in one of the opening sets I've heard. Her mp3 of the month page has it that way, and the setlist from Southgate has the "Things" appended as well, so to speak.
beforesunrise
ohhhh, interesting...thanks for the clarification!

ShawnF
Thanks for that heads-up on the new mp3. This is what she opened with at Southgate.
Trudes
I like it.
It's not as sad and depreesing as I'd like it to be.
My favorite songs from most any artist are the saddest and darkest ones.
But hearing a new song is still great.
Maybe if Amos adds some weeping bass it will darken it up a bit.

I can't wait to hear the show, Shawn.
beforesunrise
I think I'm the same way about liking the darkest and saddest songs from an artist the best.

being pestersome about lyrics again...anybody got the words for "I Came To"?
Trudes
Hi Beforesunrise,
Well, I'm up for the challenge, cuz I love this song..
I listened to all my recordings of this song with headphones on.
(My favorite rendition, BTW, is the York St performance on 5/6 with her band. The cello or bass is an excellent complement and even though Kim apparently had a cold that night, she still nailed it IMO).
A husky voice adds something maybe.
Here's what I'm hearing (I think):

I Came To
w/m Kim Taylor

I came to where the water was wide where the water was wide where I came to
Word came down to recover my soul to recover my soul where I came to
Eighteen years in a woman’s worst fears and nothing was left where I came to.
The bed was sold and my old man old when I came back where I came to.
I saw that black fly,
I saw that black fly comin’ back.
I saw that black fly.

I came to where a good man fell and it hurt like hell where I came to
I told myself that the next time here I would make amends with all I fear
Where I came to I saw that black fly.
I saw that black fly comin’ back.
I saw that black fly
Gimme a ride why not a little trade in deal for this mess
Myself
No, buy me a drink or rain, something new to cool my body down
That’s swell, that’ll do swell

Oh where I came to
oh where I came to
oh where I came to
ah where I came to
oh where I came to
oh where I came to
oh where I came to
oh where I came to

Let me know if you hear something different.
ShawnF
I love this song, too, but, much as I like Amos's playing, I'm not a fan of his bowed bass. Both this track from York St. and the two tracks from Canal Street in which he uses a bow suffer from intonation problems and sometimes . . . interesting note choices, IMO.

The Schubas recording has it full band, right? My new favorite version is the Southgate one, actually. I wouldn't have guessed this would work well if it had been described to me in advance, but it really does. Josh left the kit and went to the opposite side of the stage and played the entire song with a large djembe and a talking drum. Very, very cool.

The audio matrix is done, BTW, and the video encoding is next up--I think the DVD of this will turn out pretty well for a first attempt, but it's still going to be several days, maybe a week, before it's all ready. Have to make a menu and some art, hopefully, as well. I'll offer an audio-only vine and then also a DVD disc + audio disc vine, so you only need to sign up for one of them. Hang in there!
«°¤°»
Amos is a cucksocker. He's egotistical and not even that good (and kind of a fundie-dimwit based on the first time I met him about 5 years ago)... and bowed bass... give me a break.

I love the rest of the KTB... too bad Mike Georgin isn't in the Monk connection anymore... I much prefer his bass style. It's like rock fusion jazz or something...

Shawn,
O M G ...
I love African drumming. I even took a short drumming class years ago...hah!!
I can't wait to see/hear your project. I'm totally excited.

The Schuba's show was a full band but it was a year ago and I don't know who the band members were. You can d/l the show from Emusic. They must have the rights to the show cuz I believe that's the only place it's available.
If you sign up you get a free trial membership for a coupla weeks. Then if you don't want to continue, you can cancel without paying anything. The show was worth the effort, IMO.
ShawnF
I did exactly that at emusic, but it says that "Asleep" is not available for download sad.gif I had another copy given to me, but it had a lot of micro-dropouts that made it hard to listen to, so I was glad to see the info about the point of origin for the show. The rest of it sounds a lot better now, at least! Of course, as you can probably tell by the enormous jpg sizes I use, I'm not a fan of compression, so .wav or .flac files would have been nice, but mp3s are the standard, and you can't fight fashion, I guess.
kylie jo
I just wanted to add that I love the drumming on "Clap Hands"... the Schuba's recording. Love it.

And p.s. Shawn, you're such a techie. smile.gif

Listening a lot to the sad, captivating 'Heart and Your Soul'

Sad, mysterious.
Here's what I hear:

Heart and Your Soul

She killed your fire
She left you old
Took your desire,
Heart and your soul
That snake got quiet
That gun got loud
I’ve had this rattle, long time now.
The bottle hit you
You saw the light
She hurt your ego on a Friday night
You held your family
You held your breath
They took her body down the highway, yeah
Down the highway
She killed your fire she left you old
Took your desire
Heart and your soul
Heart and your soul
Heart and your soul
Heart and your soul

Do you think he shot her?
Did she die of old age?

Sad and dark...love it.

If you do go, I wonder if you will record.
I have become a huge fan of this woman, yet the only way I can hear her live is through the recordings.
I will be so grateful to you if you record.

ShawnF
Trudes,

I'll be going and plan on recording. Have to have a look at the venue to see if video is going to be practical or not (the balcony at Southgate was very helpful, and I know the Loft is only one level, so I'm not positive that I can find a spot that will guarantee unobstructed viewing).

I think she's great, too!!
«°¤°»
It's one level with beams fairly consistently throughout... if you snag a table it wouldn't be bad for recording video ...
