Full Version: WATCH THOSE PICTURE SIZES

Everyone... PLEASE take a moment and check any pictures that you've uploaded here to make sure they're "web-friendly".

We're running out of space, and quickly.

Please take some time and look 'em over. Delete what you can, re-size when possible, and (even better), host stuff OFF this site and post links.

We're running out of space, and quickly. If we need to take more drastic measures to free up space, we'll do it.

That sounds really scary. Do you mean like "get rid of" folks?

I imagine we may soon have only several hundred pictures of Karin singing rather then several hundred thousand. Oh sad day!

Rather than doing the "Add This Attachment" and placing your JPG on the Orchard server... put it on your own server, another server, a blog server, a yahoo photo server, or leave it wherever it currently is (if it's a photo from the web somewhere)...

Then place it in your post by putting this in your post:

[IMG] http://...location of file.../name.jpg [/IMG ] (for example)

HTH! HAND!

photobucket.com is a great place to do this. They will even give you the tags to post elsewhere.

Oh yes, PhotoBucket is very nice...

If you choose to use it, it is best to use the IMG tags that PhotoBucket generates. It's the third option under the pictures you upload.

Hey Drew....

What if we start a little Apple cash pot and raise some money for a couple hundred gigs of space? Drives are cheapish, if just some of us thew in 10 bucks each it'd be no problem. I'd start the ante.

Let us know.

Flickr.com is great for Mac users.

oh could this (hope of all hopes) possibly mean that we might have to get rid of the "What are you wearing / eating / touching right now" type threads? wow...to have such an uncluttered orchard, where mindless banality is banished...I see a light in the distance, a dream, a hope...could there really be a God? This may be the very sign I was looking for...

Brookd.. it's more about the pictures...

I'm wearing a Caedmon's Call (old) t-shirt and drinking OJ right now.

That'd be a great idea if we hosted the site on our hardware, but we don't. We're renting space on a rackserver.

I wish that deleting those threads would free up the necessary space. I actually hoped those threads would fade away on their own as the signal level increased. I am surprised that they haven't.

The issue is with graphics, which take up tons of space.

I would also like to mention that this issue -- of running out of space due to graphics -- is quite common with the larger forums, of which we are one.

Drew, you didn't tell is what you were wearing, eating and touching...

well, we know what you're touching... but what are you eating and wearing?

but...but...every little bit counts, right? maybe you should just delete those threads anyway and see what happens. like getting hundreds of dollars from cashing in your penny jar, you might be surprised. no?

is the IMG tag better than the others? i've always used the URL tag, and it's worked just fine.

i love the photobucket. it's really easy and free. i use it to send many of my pictures through e-mail as well, since it saves e-mail space on both accounts.
Brookd
'scuse me while I talk to myself...
(maybe if I started a trend on those threads where we post a picture of what we're eating / drinking / touching, then maybe they'd have to delete the whole thread, baby, bathwater and all...
mwuh ha ha ha...)

Either IMG or URL work just fine.

So, the forum doesn't take bmp images? Is that why the freakin' image tags won't work? If so... how do you change the picture from a bmp to a jpg? (please help before I throw my computer out the windown. thaaaaanks.)

BMP images are not a 'web-standard', so we don't accept them. JPGs are much smaller without loss, so that's the preferred format.

There are converters out there... Google "bmp to jpg".

I'm not sure where to ask this question, but I figured this would be as good a place as any...

I was trying to change my avatar and user picture, and it won;t let m do it at all. I've checked to make sure both are small enough in K and in pixels, but all trying to change the picture does, is end up resizing the pics I already have to the new pictures sizes, without actually changing the pictures.

I've also tried to link them with a URL in the little URL thingy, and I got an error message with that too.

Any clue what I'm doing wrong?
kay anthony
nevermind. aparently I'm not so bright with the technology. the good Mr. fallingleaf fixed it for me.

T'weren't nuthin.' And it was less your fault than the fault of that most evil of empires, who clearly caused that caching issue via their Internet Explorer demon, which was the crux of the whole thing.

We stand united against them now.

We're running WAY out of space on the forums, so I've had to disable UPLOADS for users. If you have images you wish to display within messages on the Orchard, you'll have to store them at one of the off-site services (www.photobucket.com is a good choice).

Please let me or the community brain trust know of any questions.
