Near the bottom of the message composition screen is an option called File Attachments.

Using this tool, you can add image(s) (of a supported filetype) to your post. To do so, click the 'Browse' button in the File Attachments option, navigate to your file, select it, and click the 'Add This Attachment' button. Repeat for additional attachments. Your file(s) will be uploaded to the website and displayed in your message.

A few notes about file attachments:
* You can attach multiple files to one message.
* Please be certain that your files are 'web-friendly' -- not huge, high-res images or in uncommon formats, for example. We pay for our storage space here and cannot afford (nor are we designed to be) an image repository. If you'd like to host your high-res, large filesize images elsewhere and LINK to them from here, that's fine. There is no reason an image hosted on this server should be more than 500K.
* Once you've added an image (or images) to a post, a couple of new buttons appear in the File Attachments option for each file you've attached.

"Remove" will delete the specific file from the server and remove it from your message.

"Add into Post" places an insertion point in the body of your message that you can use to place a specific image exactly where you want it. If you do not "Add into Post", the attachment is displayed as a thumbnail at the bottom of your post.

As an example, I've added a couple of pictures to this thread (together, they are both under 120K). If I click "Add into Post" next to one of them, it appears here. Click to view attachment As you can see, this is useful to place specific file(s) exactly where you want it to appear. The forum software 'automagically' creates the correct link and inserts it at the cursor position in the editor... All you do is select the attachment you want, position the cursor, and click "Add into Post". The forum does the rest.

Here's what that looks like in your editor:

CODE
If I click "[FONT=Courier]Add into Post[/FONT]" next to one of them, it appears here. [attachmentid=3203] As you can see, this is useful to place specific file(s) exactly where you want it to appear.

I did not click "Add into Post" next to the second picture, so it should appear at the bottom of this post as a clickable thumbnail, which is the default behavior.

Using these tools, you can place specific attachments exactly where you want them in your posts.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Is the only way to make it appear as not-a-thumbnail to link it to a URL?
drew
Yes.

does linking it to a url take up costly space?

As long as the graphic file isn't hosted on this site, a URL takes almost no space.

The large graphic files are what eats our storage.

Well, just to be difficult, I'm going to start linking to tiny, tiny pictures... but with URLs comprised of 6.5^1024 characters.

Yeah.

Lemme know how that works out for you.

Be careful when linking to images on other peoples sites though. Unless you have control of the site or know the people that run the site it is generally not a good idea.

Example, I think Michelle linked to a movie poster on another site and they changed the image to something else. This could be dangerous depending on what they choose to put in place of the original. biggrin.gif

Hey Drew,

Do you run the site where you host the fan pic image gallery? Perhaps we could arrange for limited logins to upload our own images...or something like that...not sure what it would involve to do this...

Just thinking outloud....

I do, but that site is also on the same server, so we pay for that service.

I've been knocking around the idea of hosting some images on my personal server (www.drewvogel.com), but that's not a pro-server and may be down at any time, so I am hesitant to bring that 'hobbyest' server into 'production' use.

There are some image hosting services out there that folks can find and use.

The simple fact is that this site's configuration/space isn't designed to host tons of images.
