Dream Theater's "Lie" is set within the song "The Mirror" on their
Awake album. On the record, the end of "Lie" is actually the end of the original incarnation of "The Mirror." For the "Lie" radio 'single,' it's stripped out of "The Mirror."
Is that what you mean by "song within a song"...?

no, what i meant was that i hear influences of the aforementioned songs
within this work

I hear Norah Jones influences in it. But maybe that's just me.

This is my favorite song off the album so far. Just can't listen to it once.
When they played it Friday at the 20th century it was the highlight of the evening for me, duck suit included. I think i got goose bumps during it. But enough of the poultry talk..
It sounds like a new standard to me, like My Funny Valentine or Night and Day.
I can see Tony Bennett crooning on this one.
I hear a little norah jones too, btw

I agree. This song screams "Listen to me fifty times then cover me in every fashion imaginable! I am too beautiful to leave alone!"

ARRRGH!
I can't stand this song!
The arrangement is just too...'Nora Jones'
and the (seeming) 17 minutes of saxophone really bugs the hell out of me.
It's a shame, because I think Karin's performance is very good, and I even like the melody....I just wish they had chosen a significantly different arrangement.
Maybe it'll grow on me...

You know, I felt the same way until I saw them last weekend. With a Bass solo from Byron House in lieu of the sax, the song came alive. Now I don't mind the sax on the recording at all.

The sax part is a complete weather-report rip off. It's completely ruins the song from me. A pity, cause I kinda like the rest of it.

Isn't there too much sax & violins in entertainment today?

I actually LOVE the saxophone solo in Little Did I Know. My dad is a professional sax player, and this song has changed him from a "my daughter likes Over the Rhine so I guess I should, too" to a raving fan.
The solo is soulful and sweet, but it also makes me think about my Pa.

i like this song......but i felt it was a little too norah jonesy for over the rhine.

i was also surprised they did this song live....wasn't this the one karin said (in an interview somebody linked on a thread) was the hardest for her to sing, emotionally speaking?

I grew up playing the sax through middle school, junior high, high school, and college. Therefore, I love the sax. However, when I heard this song the first time on WNKU I felt like saying, 'ok, enough with the sax solo,' feeling like a hypocrit.
But, the entire story changed when I heard it at the 20th Century Theater. Now I don't mind the ever-lasting sax solo on the album. Brent (is that his name??) was incredible and his playing even brought tears to my eyes on this song. And, I felt like this song was one of the best that K&L performed that night - so much feeling and power!
I'd really love to know the brand of saxophone that (Brent?) was playing. (If anyone knows, please let me know.)

I've been back and forth on the saxamaphone solo--when I first heard the song, I was mildly chagrined by it. On repeated listens, I started to be OK with it, because it's a beautiful song overall.
And then one day I imagined that it was Karin that was playing the solo. And now when I hear it, I smile, because it's a really funny mental image. hee hee. Karin's just blowing the hell outta that sax.

I love the sax solo on this song, and really missed it at Canal Street. I just wish they had mixed it a little higher on the album, it sounds almost like it's in the next room.
The song is a little Norah Jonesy for my taste too.

Sorry to go on, not only the sax bothers me but the bass.. ARGH. It's like: hand the damn thing to linford already. UGH. It's competent and all, but SO boring...
