I was always moved by Warren Zevon's Zen-like approach to life. When Warren found out he was dying, his quote to the press was something like "my only regret is that I won't live long enough to see the next James Bond movie". Priceless.

Anyway, the recent tribute release carries the similarly Zen title of "Enjoy Every Sandwich". Which got me thinking ... what's my favorite sandwich?

Well, there's this thing called a Panelle, done only (to my knowledge) at Joe's of Avenue U in Brooklyn (a down-home Sicilian Soul food restaurant). It's three patties of crushed chick peas, pressed into a leaf mold and deep fried. They are stacked on a fresh semolina roll with a hefty dollop of homemade ricotta and shavings of fresh parmesan. It's wonderfully crispy, nutty and creamy all at the same time.

Being 700 miles away, I quite enjoy fresh mootz on Italian bread with roasted red peppers, olive oil and good balsamic vinegar.

Let's hear yours ....

In London, just on the south side of Blackfriar's Bridge, to the west, on Stamford St, there's a pub called The Mad Hatter. Now, in London, see, you order and pay at the bar, then they bring your food out to you. Pick a seat in the lovely wooden interior and watch a football match on the big screen while you wait.

Anyway...they have the most delicious ham and cheese sandwich. I'm not even sure of the bread, but it makes the sandwich. Its got thick cut ham slices with shredded melted cheese, which I think is a blend of mozarella and parmesean, and probably something else. There's just a thin light layer of mayo on the bread. Its good and warm and perfectly filling along with the thick cut chips(what we might call steak fries).

Man, that's making me hungry! I know what I'm having for lunch on June 19th!

there are a lot of sandwiches i love. anything with grilled veggies or with avocado but i think my favourite is baked bree and garlic on calabrase. though i love chevre on any sandwich, too. i'm hungry.

Oh ... London ... I just remembered ...

Okay, in London, there's a popular sandwich chain called Pret a Manger. They make all the sandwiches fresh daily and put them in refrigerated cases in the store; at the end of the day, whatever is left over gets donated to local homeless shelters and soup kitchens. Score one for Pret a Manger.

At any Pret a Manger in London, you can get a tomato, basil, and mozzerella sandwich on a crispy (but not ridiculously tough or thick) baguette. Tender cheese, whole leaves of crisp, fresh basil, tomatoes that are soft without being runny or mush ... sweet Lord in heaven, now that is a sandwich for a summer day. A little pricey (comparable to Panera Bread or Crisper's here), but worth it at least once in your life if you're ever in the UK.

Stateside, I won't say no to a thick Reuben on rye with piled high with corned beef and sauerkraut, or to a hot, crispy Cuban sandwich with real Cuban-style bread and an appropriate number of pickle slices.

Ahhh ... Cuban Sandwiches. I used to go to a Dominican place in Washington Heights for a Cuban, an avocado salad and wonderful Dominican coffee with condensed milk.

And only in NYC would I call this a sandwich I love: an Everything bagel with scallion spread and a slice of tomato. Oy.

Deb ... pardon my ignorance. What's chevre?

Brie and Grapes! A classic flavor combination! Too bad no one seems to sell them in the US.

So part cheese, part roofies? Is that what I'm hearing?

Since you two are obviously people of taste, I'm going to be on the lookout for some of that badass cheese. My cholesterol, last I checked, was a gaudy 111 ... so BRING ON THE CHEESE!
jame$
It's made by a little chain-bakery here in Columbia called "Rising High."

The sandwich is called "the Sonoma" (i have no idea why), and it's grilled paninni bread with sundried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, smoked mozzerella, and pesto. Normally I love eating dead animals, but this is one veggie dish that defies the norm.

...oh, and with a glass of chilled Beaujolais Nouveau it's MA-gical.

Lettuce and tomato on wheat toast.

(Fresh from the vine summer tomatoes and redleaf lettuce on homemade whole wheat with Hellman's mayo, salt and pepper. It's best when the tomatoes are still hot from the sun.)

I could eat one hundred of these sandwiches....simple pleasures.
Carribeanpenguin
Um...my very favorite thus far is:bacon and onions on white bread/toast.

::drool::

However, my recent discovery of the wonderful taste of tomatoes might soon make it a bacon, onion, and tomato sandwich....I've also recently discovered that lettuce works well on sandwiches....so you might soon be able to say it's a BLT with O.

It's hard to be gourmet when you've been picky for 22 years of your life and are just now branching out to bigger and better tastes.

a good old peanut butter sandwich is fine with me any time, day or night suits me just fine.
reuben sandwiches from The Sandwich Factory right down the street are always a good thing.

Turkey, bacon, guacamole. Today, anyway...

I dunno, I'm not really into fancy stuff...just give me meat and carbs. wink.gif

Turkey, avacado, bacon, bean, provolone cheese, spicy mustard, mayo, little oil and vinegar and all on a whole wheat hoagie.

Oh! And banana peppers!

My all-time favorite is the classic Muffaletta sandwich made at Central Grocery in New Orleans, across from the Café du Monde on Decatur Street. It's assembled on a round loaf of crusty Italian bread with prosciutto, salami, provolone and a truly magical olive salad. There's a pretty good recipe here.

Much more healthy when garden tomatoes are available is a simple sandwich of sliced ripe tomatoes and Muenster on whole grain bread with a little mustard and mayo. Mmmmmmm.

DUDE! Remember sitting out there by the river in New Orleans!?! The olive oil was running down my arm as I ate it! The Muffaletta is truly the king of all sandwiches! All sandwiches need to bow down to the Mighty, Mighty Muffaletta!

Right now, this is my favorite:

Turkey Provalone

1 slice whole wheat bread
2 slices oven-roasted turkey
*Essence infused cream cheese
1 slice provolone
**1 large, cracked garlic green olive, sliced (in olive oil)

Spread cream cheese on bread slice and top with turkey, then olive, then provolone, Place on broiler pan and broil for 10 minutes until provolone is brown and bubbly.

Makes 1 sandwich.

*Cream cheese mixed with a splash of milk and Essence (Emeril's Creole Seasoning) recipe elsewhere in this forum.

**I get them in my grocers' deli dept.

oooh this reminds me of another one of my favorites. i get it at a little place called Quinton's in Lawrence. it's called the T.A.C.---turkey, avacado and cream cheese, and they grill it.

:: eyes roll back into head ::

it comes with sprouts, but i always get it sprout-free. oh, and they have the half-sandwich and soup deal. i always get a half of this with potato-bacon soup in a bread bowl.

Nice! I used to eat sliced Granny Smith apples and brie on a baguette just slightly warmed. Oh God, please deliver me back to NYC!
FloridaGirl
Oh dear, that reminds me -- a good chicken salad with grapes, apples, and maybe walnuts on rye or sourdough ... holy.

And Troy, I am SO with you on the banana peppers. I've been getting these wraps made at school with fajita chicken, muenster cheese, lettuce, olives, and banana peppers -- the dang things don't even need seasoning, you just get them pressed and you're golden.

Man. I know what I want for lunch tomorrow! smile.gif (Or do I -- so many options have been opened up to me in this thread!)

I have a runner up. It got relagated from #1 status about a year and a half ago.

Toasted sourdough with cream cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers, romaine, and green pepper slices.

The new front runner: Grilled tomato sandwich

Toaste sourdough (or other yummy bread) with lemon garlic mayo, grilled (broiled in the winter for us wintertime wimps), romaine, a little salt, fresh cracked pepper, and good balsamic.

I tell you this one is so amazing, I linger after eating it and just savor the flavor.

When will I learn not to read Christina's food-related posts late in the afternoon?

I am so hungry now...

You reminded me of a line from Keep Me In Your Heart from Warren's final CD titled The Wind which goes something like this:

"I'm tied to you like the buttons on your blouse, keep me in your heart for a while."

I quoted it as part of my mom's eulogy at the gravesite.

And, if I remember correctly, he ended up living long enough to see the film.

avacado, gooood real monterey jack cheese, tomatoes, red onions, sprouts and a thin spread of home made hummus on good whole grain... and salt and pepper... yum!

boy, i sound sooo granola...

for my foodie-sandwich... i gotta go with roasted eggplant and roasted peppers, with really good parmesan, olive tapenade and fresh spinach on toasted baguette

for my northwest (mukilteo coffee shop) sandwich - toasted everything bagel, cream cheese, northwest smoked salmon, cucumbers, sprouts and tomato

for my bowling alley-greasy spoon favorite - a reuben. i love em... with lots o fries. ; )

see, i am diverse!
Lynne
I would almost never turn down a Reuben sandwich.

: )

Except for the Reubens they make around here, using what can best be described as "questionable" corned beef. Those, I refuse to eat.

(Reminds me a little of the "mock drumstick" they used to serve at my grade school.)

Guess what I found today ... that's right, chevre! I was tempted to pick it up (I was in this Middle Eastern place for lunch), but it's too warm outside and I thought I would be in the field all day. It's spreadable, I take it?

Even he was surprised at how long he survived ... beautiful thought at your mother's funeral. Yes, he did see the film ... which totally crushed me. I remember being "in a state" for a few days afterwards.

Lately, I've been a big fan of the all beef hot dog on a decadently pasty white bun with chili, onions, cheese and a pinch of relish! YUM.

Okay:

Wheat sub roll. Roast beef. Lettuce. Tomato. Black olives. Cucumber. Banana peppers. Olive oil. Balsamic vinegar.

Sweet Jesus, yes.

I've been trying to think of my favorite sandwich for days now, and I just couldn't settle on anything.

Then I remembered my childhood fav. (which is probably still my fav) and that is fried bolgna and yellow mustard on the wonder bread.

Simple yet elegent. heh. smile.gif

Just rereading this thread, Trudes' post reminds me of an old song written by Guy Clark, popularized by John Denver:

There aint nothin in the world that I like better
Than bacon n lettuce n homegrown tomatoes
Up in the mornin, out in the garden
Get you a ripe one, dont pick a hard 'un
Plant 'em in the spring, eat em in the summer
All winter without em is a culinary bummer
I forget all about the sweatin and the diggin
Every time I go out and pick me a big un

Home grown tomatoes, home grown tomatoes
What would life be like without homegrown tomatoes
Only two things that money cant buy
That's true love and home grown tomatoes

You can go out to eat an thats for sure
But theres nothin a homegrown tomatoe wont cure
Put em in a salad, put em in a stew
You can make your own tomatoe juice
You can eat em with eggs, eat em with gravy
You can eat em with beans, pinto or navy
Put 'em on the side, put em in the middle
Home grown tomatoes on a hot cake griddle

Home grown tomatoes, home grown tomatoes
What would life be like without homegrown tomatoes
Only two things that money cant buy
That's true love and home grown tomatoes

If Is to change this life I lead
You could call me Johnny Tomatoe Seed
Cause I know what this country needs
Home grown tomatoes in every yard you see
When I die dont bury me
In a box in a cold dark cemetary
Out in the garden would be much better
Cause I could be pushin up a home grown tomatoe

Home grown tomatoes, home grown tomatoes
What would life be like without homegrown tomatoes
Only two things that money cant buy
That's true love and home grown tomatoes

Words and music by Guy Clark

upon reviewing this thread, I'm pretty sure that I could live on sandwiches and nothing more for the rest of my life. (that is assuming that liquid bread is included somewhere in there.)

Grilled Cheese and bacon on sour dough. MMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm! biggrin.gif

This is a pretty good one, too:

Grilled PB & J

2 slices of white bread (or whole-grain something-or-other, if you'd prefer), lightly buttered on one side

A glob of Jif peanut butter (however much you wish, and whatever brand you like)

A glob of grape jelly (or any flavor, really)

Place one slice of bread, buttered side down, on a very warm skillet. Smear on the peanut butter and then the jelly. Add the other slice of bread, buttered side up. Heat until golden brown, then serve.

This is really yummy, and the peanut butter and jelly get all runny!

(Of course, there's always PB&J toast, but when I have time, I like this way better.)

: )

Best served with a tall glass of ice-cold milk. And potato chips are a nice accompaniment!

Friggin' yum!

my ex and i came up with the quite by accident...i think i was starting making him a bagel and he wanted ham and cheese, so i improvised.

you toast a bagel to your liking, then spread cream cheese on it. then you add slices of ham and provolone cheese...they are incredible.

i may have to have a sandwich today for lunch...going out with my friend, because her husband is on vacation, so *he* can watch the kids!

happy thursday, all!

My restaurant does a sliced ribeye sandwich served au jus ... oh God, it's like a little bite of heaven.
