Full Version: Liner notes for the MP3 rarities

I'm curious about the origins of the songs that ended up beeing MP3's of the month over the years. I'm sure the combined expereince of this forum has info on pretty much every song: year recorded, when published, circumstances for the recordings to come about and so on. So anyway, here are the songs in alphabetical order, post any info you have in the list, and we'll see what we'll come up with. If somebody could put them in chronological order it would be nice.

I know some of these ended up on The Cutting Room Floor but I would totally buy another disc of rare/live/outtake tracks like that if they ever released one. I know they have more of that stuff lying around...

I wonder how cheaply they could press 1,000 or so discs and just sell them through their site, maybe release a few discs like that just for the uber-hardcore people...it'd be a neat project to do if K&L ever decided to have some downtime from music-making.

Just thought I'd throw that idea out there. wink.gif

Here's the easy one (since it's still up on OTR's site):

Karin did say at the recent Canal Street shows that the (Republican) Ohio Governor's wife thought the song was "too radical" for the originally proposed cd project and it won't be on the cd, and that she was thinking of turning it into a children's book.

It costs roughly $1,200-$1,500 to press 1,000 CDs.
I'm sure they could make that back in no time.

My album cost about $1,250 to press.

October Dancing Queen (live) ~ 9/6/97 Devou Park, Covington KY (with the Northern Kentucky Symphony)

I don't remember "Dancing Queen" being released as an MP3 rarity. I remember the October 2000 rarity being "Faithfully Dangerous" from Cornerstone 1998.

I was thinking that, too. I remember snagging my copy from Napster back in the day, and the quality seems too poor for it to have been an official mp3 of the month.
DustyVolume
I honestly can't remember back that far. I know the whole concert was broadcast over the radio, so this MP3 could have come from anywhere.

Did anyone else keep good records of this?

I know it was broadcast on a cable station in Cincinnati at the time, and I think Shelly offered to make audio tapes for people on the list shortly afterwards. I have one, but the sound quality on that is only so-so. It's quite possible someone transferred an audio copy to mp3 sometime after that.

That's the only MP3 that didn't look right in your list... the rest looked to be correct to me, but then again, I'm going from memory, too.

Jeff and Jeanne,

I just did a quick search on the actwin list and found this from Peter Chattaway. I can't imagine this would be wrong, since I can rarely remember him ever citing something that was, and then the fact that no one challenged him.

I don't think anybodys mentioned this here yet, but the mp3 of the month
for October is up on overtherhine.com now.  It's a live performance of
'Faithfully Dangerous' at Cornerstone 98, which I think I already have
thanks to some bootlegs that were floating around, but anyhoo ...

I'm fairly new here, I've only gotten two mp3 rarities myself (and i got another from a connection on another message board) - but I thought that Archive.org might have something on this. Sure enough: http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.ov...rity/index.html

Anyway, that should fill in quite a few.
Aaron
Speaking of, does anyone know the extra lyrics in the long version of "How long have you been stoned?"

Is anyone willing to share some of the older rarities? I know a few of them are now available on CD, but I don't see why the rest wouldn't be fair game. Unless there was some fine print that said "Mp3 Rarities of the month are not to be redistributed", I think there shouldn't be any issue.

There's a vine where you can get them all.

Does anybody know anything about "This Daring Light?" Its the song with Ron Sexsmith. Not a whole lot comes up when you google it. I'm guessing its a Sexsmith song that hasn't been included on any releases. It's a great song... I'm trying to work out the lyrics.
eustacescrubb
If memory serves, it's a Jack Henderson song.

February: Born

October: Drunkard's Prayer (Saxophone Mix)
It's always a challenge to figure out what to put on a project. Brent played a beautiful saxophone solo, but in the end we went for a simpler version of the song. Did we make the right choice? Anyway, enjoy this alternate take.
Musicians:
Voice and Piano: Karin Bergquist
Cello: David Henry
Upright bass: Byron House
Saxaphone: Brent Gallaher

December: Flown Free
Voices: Karin Bergquist
Piano: Karin Detweiler
Various musicians were asked to contribute an original song to a cd based on a new translation of The Book of Psalms by Eugene H. Petersen, and Karin and Linford recorded Flown Free, their simple composition based on lines from Psalm 129 & 124. It just so happens Flown Free is their first attempt at recording a little something in their new, 170-year-old farmhouse that they now call home. This December, we thought you might enjoy this simple song. Set it free.
