Oh, my goodness - bring on the Oscars!

Chris Rock to host Oscars

QUOTE
"I am a huge fan of Chris Rock," said Gil Cates, the producer of the Oscars telecast. "He always makes me laugh and he always has something interesting to say. Chris represents the best of the new generation of comics. Having him host the Oscars is terrific."

I searched for the old Oscars thread - but I think it went "bye-bye" in the bulk that got sucked into the cyber-wasteland.

well, i'm sure we can all trust the academy to be unbiased and not at all swayed by box office or popularity. ph34r.gif

Right... that's how A Beautiful Mind won. dry.gif

Ugh... that still bugs me. I wouldn't have minded so much, had it been either 1) not based on a true person, or 2) they actually followed the true story of that person.

but I thought you liked movies that don't follow the true stories of people. tongue.gif I was hoping the mail would come early so that I could watch 9/11 before I go to class tonight (mental health day...cough, cough). No such luck.....maybe I'll get to see it tomorrow.

again... barry... it does follow the true facts of what happened... watch before judging.

I do believe they're announcing the 2005 Oscar Nominees tomorrow...

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! And I'm still equally thrilled about this.

Have you seen his latest HBO special? Pretty good stuff, although upon a repeat viewing I did grow a little tired of his ranting on people of pop culture (Michael Jackson, Kobe, Janet Jackson, etc. )
DJDelicious
here's the list of this year's nominees.

how exciting that jamie foxx is up for both a leading and supporting role award, and i'm happy to see both catalina sandino moreno and kate winslet in the running.
amcorrea
ˇEstoy muy emocionada por la nominación de mi paisana! smile.gif

quick plug for a band dear to my heart... counting crows are going to play accidentally in love on the show. i could show you some of the actions my friend jules and i made up when we saw them play it at two shows near san francisco but the copyright hasn't gone through yet and i don't want anyone stealing them. smile.gif

you think cc has a shot at winning an oscar?

Jon Stewart to Host 2006 Academy Awards

The 78th annual Academy Awards will air March 5 on ABC

QUOTE
"As a performer, I'm truly honored to be hosting the show," Stewart said, then joked: "Although, as an avid watcher of the Oscars, I can't help but be a little disappointed with the choice. It appears to be another sad attempt to smoke out Billy Crystal."

I find this news to be most excellent. smile.gif
DJDelicious
No way!!! That's magical!!
WalrusOct9
Unfortunately the only movies I've seen this year are Rent and The 40 Year Old Virgin, neither of which are going to be nominated. I love Jon Stewart, but I'm not sure it's worth watching a 3 hour MPAA self-congradulatory ritual about movies I've never seen.

I miss seeing movies...when did they get so friggin' expensive? sad.gif
Aaron
Yeah, this year did not excite me movie wise. I probably will not watch.

March of the Pengiuns will probably win... but I think that Enron: the Smartest Guys in the Room was more engaging (I haven't seen the other three)... and that's not because I'm an accountant and not a penguin. Penguins was, well, good, but I'll leave it at that...

It probably wouldn't be accurate to say I was disappointed by the noms, cause I wasn't expecting a whole lot (other than a best picture nom for 'Walk the Line'...phttttt.)

My take on the whole thing, however, is that - just like the Golden Globes - the Academy sure the hell ain't gonna miss a chance to make a political statement. I almost believe the reason 'Walk the Line' and 'Cinderella Man' weren't nominated for best pic is because they were void of political ideology/statments/agendas.

Just a thought...

Really? I just wish I could have seen more. All I have seen so far is The History of Violence, Walk the Line, Corpse Bride and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. These haven't made it to my hometown theater yet:

Good Night and Good Luck
Munich
Brokeback Mountain
Capote
TransAmerica

and I haven't had a chance to get out of town to catch them. angrycat.gif

Capote

A good portion of the movie takes place in my hometown, and it hasn't even made it THERE!!!
kelvinbailey
I think Capote was possibly one of the two most overrated films of the year.

PSH wasn't acting as much as he was imitating.

Heath was much better. And Jaquin. And Russell. And Raphe.
MusykLvr
i've only seen three movies on the entire list..._corpse bride_, _charlie and the chocolate factory_, and _march of the penguins_.

luckily, i don't care about awards shows. smile.gif although i do enjoy jon stewart.

Seeing that the Oscars are a guilty pleasure (or self-inflicted torture) that I am denied this year, I'll be following the Oscar 2006 Blog. Live blogging benefitting the underprivileged.
kentuckiannna
I loved the intro...fantastic. Clooney there. Nice. Dolly Parton rocked with her big bad ass, but this second chick is just lame with all her props and dancers. I loved the French guys, despite the language barrier.
kentuckiannna
I love this one from Anna Marie's blog:

kentuckiannna
And the violist rocks, though many will complain...
amcorrea
Uh oh...

Is it really getting this bad?
kentuckiannna
No, it's getting that good. biggrin.gif Robert Altman's speech was awesome, special in that octogenarian way...
He made a metaphor about how making a movie was like making a sand castle. It's something you invite your friends to come along and build with you, after which you all stand by and watch the sea come to take it out.
kentuckiannna
Wow, it's West Side Story-goes-Compton. Oh-my-gawd, what a musical end to a straight-up rap song. Hilarious. The dancers sucked.
kentuckiannna
Queen Latifa in the hiz-ouse! Uh, she lookin' good too. And the pimps win! Oooooooh! And they cursed! It's a decadent year...hee hee hee.
kentuckiannna
The lobbying-campaign commercials parodies are priceless. I'm so sorry you're missing this Anna Marie...

I know!! But your running commentary helps (liked that Altman bit)!
kentuckiannna
Dead Actors...great band name...
amcorrea
They left out Don Knotts?!
kentuckiannna
Tsotsi won for best foreign language film. Nice. Very emotional speech.
amcorrea
Wow, that's a bit of a surprise isn't it?

Did they mention Fugard?
kentuckiannna
Black is very in this year for actresses. Sandra Bolluck and now Hilary Swank are entirely in black (and very classy) and the Asain actress (whose name escapes me had a black bodice with a stunning silver lace full floor-length skirt.
kentuckiannna
Best Actor is

Phillip Seymour Hoffman for Capote! (which I didn't see)
amcorrea
Ziyi Zhang, right?
kentuckiannna
Wow, he's shaking and practically weeping...wow, very moving comment about his mom, telling people to congratulate her, being a single mom, what that meant, etc. Very nice. Best speech by a bigwig contender so far.

Has Brokeback been shut out so far? I can't remember if they won one of the technical awards, but I don't think so...

Yes. She was lovely. I like her dress and Sandra Bollucks so far. SB's was all black and very classicly 40's with a bodice and ful circle skirt w/ train, a litte black netting hanging out over the bosom. She looked fab.

So far, yes. But the big ones are still to come--I think it'll get adapted screenplay for sure.
kentuckiannna
John Travolta presenting. Jon Stewart made a Scientology joke earlier. Oops.
kentuckiannna
Memiors seems to be a bit of an industry favorite for technical awards...snoozer of a speech though.
kentuckiannna
Oh, yeah, Jamie Foxx! His album sucks though.

And the best actress is:

Reese Witherspoon! In a beautiful golden lace gown. A breathless yet uninspiring speech... Oh gosh how she is yammering away and getting more Tennessee by the minute. Funny how you really see people's roots come out when they're in the moment...
amcorrea
Yes, that was forseen (I don't think Judy Dench or Keira Knightly should've been nominated).
kentuckiannna
They need to downgrade that Ocsar threat level after that speech. She made some jibe about her character being a "real woman," which I suspect was a jab at Felicity Huffman's character, but that's just stoopid. They'r eboth actresses and Felicity's role probably took more skill to play than some chick from Tennessee playing some chick from Tennessee. Dumb thing to say.
