Does anybody have any suggestions on the best place to get webspace on the net? I'm not into all the free sites that are cookie cutter point and click stuff, and bury spyware and ads all over your harddrive and monitor.

I'm willing to pay, but don't know of any good sites.

HEY, i need your techie advice:

i just learned about usb removeable data storage devices...

and i have some questions:
* are they useful for long-term storage (instead of burning documents to a disk)?

* do ALL PCs have a USB port that can be used?

* is there a specific brand that is better than others?

this is just an aside, but i never know where to find quality information on the Internet (capitalized "I" just for brandon) regarding technologic devices (like these nifty storage thingies, or digital cameras, for example). anyone have any sites that can point me in a good direction?

thanks,
kelly
Carribeanpenguin
Kelly,

I have a Lexar 256 MB jump drive (a.k.a. a USB mass storage device). I LOVE it. Most of the students here have them (Lexar seems to be the preferred brand). Most of the computers at school have accessible (on the front) USB ports, and the others have them on the back of the main unit...I think they'll be more and more accessible in the near future. I'm not sure that I'd use mine for Extended storage (especially of valuable materia) because it is very small (about the size of a pink rubber eraser) and a few people have managed to crush them in some way and have thus lost any valuable information.

This size and brand runs about 80 bucks (when not on sale), but I'm sure you can find other brands for cheaper (and there is a widely available 125 MB size).

Another problem is that it's not actually all that much space! They have come out with a one GB at the same eraser size-ish...but by the time you reach THAT price range, you might as well spring for an actual external hard drive (I got a 60GB one for about US$200.00) THIS is what might be good for actual long term storage as IMO, the 'jump' drives are mostly used for quick data transfer (as opposed to burning a CD just to give the guy on the computer next to you a file. (of course...now that I've figured out infared....).

So - my advice is to go for the external hard drive...it'll work in exactly the same way and ends up being just a tad bigger than a deck of cards. (although I'll repeat that I LOVE my jump drive...)

As for information, when I was researching jump drives, i just typed in 'jump drive' or 'flash drive' and found lots of sites full of info. I'm sure someone else has an actual 'techie' type site that they can recommend though.... biggrin.gif
keith from ny
At this point, you can get a fast 160 Gigabyte external USB drive for $200. I have a Western Digital 120G I got a while ago that works great, and I also have a very fast Maxtor 200G (although I have it connected to my PC via a firewire port). These disks are fast and reliable, and very good for backup. Make sure your PC has an available USB 2.0 port before you buy one of them, however. USB 1 is too slow for this type of application, although it may be OK for a low-capacity flash drive for moving a few files between machines.

I usually search for online reviews of computer products before buying them, or sometimes PC Magazine or Consumer Reports will compare different brands -- recent issues of both can be found in most libraries.

with those jumpdrives, kelly, there's something else that needs to be done after you save the file and before you yank the drive out of the port. i don't know what it is, but maybe someone will come along and let us know... please ?

Well actually - this applies to ANY external device inserted into your computer whether it be your wireless card, camera, or anything connected by USB port. You're supposed to use the 'unplug and eject hardware' feature. Sometimes I use it, sometimes i don't. Some people I know swear by it though...

And just so you know, saving stuff onto or off of your jump drive or external harddrive pretty much consists of either drag-and-release or cut-and-paste. Very, very simple. biggrin.gif

I can vouch for this as I have lost mine recently. Thankfully any important stuff was password protected, but it still sucks.

and what, where, how do you do this ?

just come hold my hand and show me, please huh.gif
Carribeanpenguin
It's an icon in your system tray that has a little green arrow. Double click on that and it'll lead you through the steps. Usually it will list the items you currently have 'plugged in'. There may be duplicate listing for your jump drive (for example: generic mass storage device AND lexar jumpdrive media) just highlight on one of these and click STOP. You may have to affirm an 'are you sure'? Give it a few seconds, and it will say something like - it is now safe to remove your hardware.

if this icon is not in your taskbar...you should find a box somewhere to check that will put it in there.

OR. You may be able to access this option in the 'open' jumpdrive window through the file command or something...

What's the CON of owning a flatscreen?
&& do you differentiate CRT v LCD/TTFT?

since the VP's a VIP, we should keep his ETA on the QT. If the VC take him POW or if he's KIA, we'll all be on KP.

Do you play games??

An LCD (flat screen) has a slightly slower response time than a CRT.
It creates strange artifacts on screen during high intensity graphics stuff sometimes. (such as gaming)
Aside from that, and the cost, there arent many other cons.

If you use photoshop, a high quality (that parts important...don't buy crap) LCD display will pretty much blow a CRT out of the water (thats been my experience anyway)

WireTap 1.0.0 (Mac)
QUOTE
WireTap is a free product for Mac OS X 10.2 or later that allows you to record any audio playing on your Mac, saving it to a file for later listening or processing. This allows you to record news from Internet radio stations such as the BBC News, sound snippets from your favorite DVD movie, record the audio from a game, or even iChatAV conversations.

WireTap works using a simple tape recorder-like interface. Simply click the record button, and any audio playing through your Mac will be recorded to disk. WireTap can record any sound that is playing regardless of the source, so RealPlayer, iTunes, DVD  Player, Windows Media Player, etc. are all supported...

In other words, if you own a Mac runing OS X 10.2 or later, and have, say...a live U2 DVD, or Santana DVD that you want transformed into audio only so you can burn to CD and play in your car, or home stereo... well, you can do that now. The only bad part is that YOU have to cut the file up into tracks(if you so desire)...but there's software for that too. (such as 'Audacity' - it's free) Be careful though, it's best to not use your Mac while recording because other sounds that come up, like 'event' sounds, (new mail alerts, AIM sounds etc)...might be recorded also.

Did I mention it's freeware?

I can vouch for the quality, I'm currently knee deep in about 5 hours of live 311 'footage' that needs to be extracted, cut, and burned...I have one disc done, and it's in the CD player rocking my world as I type. The quality is flawless.

My sound card does this too. It's called "what you hear" mode and I can record anything I want to. Of course, I never do. It's cool though.

oh bloody hell. i'm on broadband. i'm behind a firewall, i run spybot s&d and adaware on a weekly basis, and yet i now have a freaking dialer on my computer that i can't get rid of. i've gone into the registry, i've run every spyware program i own, i've removed it twice through the control panel. it won't go away (kinda like that creepy guy at the mall).

any help would be severely appreciated. no, i haven't been to any porn sites. i swear.

i downloaded realplayer 10 and am having issues with it -- like not wanting to burn cd correctly. it keeps erroring out. is it separation anxiety from the former program or is my lack of computer knowledge showing brightly?

not peaceful,
zayne
FallingLeaf
Zayne, no idea specifically... but if it's Winders and if it's Real, the one or the other website probably has help under the support message for your error message.

You probably ain't the first... be peaceful.
zayne
thanks -- but help was the first place i turned and was denied info.
FallingLeaf
As in, you searched the support sections of both vendors' websites? Or do you mean within the program? 'cause the former is generally better... you can search for the specific error message you're getting.

Here, allow me:

YAY!

was able to get my former real player back -- i'm happy now.

Here's a neat, and possibly scary, little trick you can do on Mac OS X. If you have a file, or folder, or even a complete drive that needs to be securely wiped, do the following:

Open up a Terminal session, ya know, that scary Unix command line beast, and type the following:

sudo srm -r -d {then drag the file/folder/drive here}

press return, enter your password when prompted and bada bing. It securely deletes whatever is on the drive. And by securely, I mean securely...it writes random data over the entire thing 35 times. data recovery software can recover files that have been deleted normally, and in some cases data that's even been written over a few times...but not 35. It's officially gone. (and yes, it takes freakin' forever!)

perfect for paranoid people, or high-tech criminals. (or for securely erasing your HD before selling your Mac)

Anyone know anything about Thunderbird?

I've started playing around with it a bit and am inclined to start using it instead of Outlook except for one thing - I can't figure out how to set up a sig for myself. I've looked and looked, checked the Mozilla website and Thunderbird's help section, but have come up empty so far. Anybody know what to do?
rda76
can anyone recommend a good shareware/freeware ftp client ? i'm probably getting in over my head with this one, so the easier to use,the better.
GrepZen
Option (1) Windows already has a built in client (or two)
open your windows explorer and in the address bar, type
CODE
ftp://"and the name of your ftp site"
and tap the [RETURN] key. if the site isn't anonymous, you'll be prompted for name/password.. and yer off!

Option (2) FTP Explorer

and... .. .

ummmm....can somebody please help me?

i have norton antivirus, and i thought that's all i needed. well, this thing pops up saying that my subscription for norton internet security expires on the 25th of next month. do i need to have that too?

a friend told me to go to my control panel, and then live update, and then okay. so i did, but then nothing happened. what should i do?
Elemental
If you want to keep your virus def's up to date, you'll need to renew the subscription. Or just buy the newest version of the software and install it. Either way.

this might be the stupidest question ever, but how do i back up my computer?

it's long overdue for me to put in those damned windows update, and the warning was to first back up my sh!t. (that's not a good sign is it? that they tell me the updates might break my computer?)

anyway... how do i back it up? (ahem...) blush.gif
FallingLeaf
That could mean a lot of different things.

The only thing you probably want to back up are files that are important to you.... pictures, documents, etc. If you have a hotmail account, you can go to groups.msn.com, login and upload some files there. Small space, but better than nothing. Likewise, if you have a gmail account, you can upload there using a little utility they have--and it's much more space. If you want a gmail account, PM me and I'll send you an invite.

But really, you could just burn a CD of the files you want to save. Or you could go all out and buy a tape drive, or ZIP drive, and back up the entire hard disk... but that would undoubtedly be overkill. I recommend you just find the files that are important to you and burn a CD.

In fact, scratch that: the windows update files aren't gonna hurt anything, anyway. They just say that so you can't bitch *in case.* What I would really, REALLY do is just run the updates and sit back. Then buy a little ZIP drive or something and back your stuff up to a removable disk from time to time. The probably cost <$75 these days.

Troy
kab
thanks!

i just wasn't sure if it was something i did internally (on the hard drive) or externally (on a disk).

i bought, not more than 3 days ago, a jump drive! (i lost the first one in the breakup.)

will do.
thanks, troy!

Yes, you could search the website for FireFox or for windows and fix the reason it's not working. Look under "Support."
