Been listening to GDBD lately and probably never paid much attention to the lyrics of "Go Down Easy" ... until yesterday.
Is it my gutter imagination, or is this song talking about oral sex?

I think I read somewhere its about driving in the country. But.... one of the things I love about Over the Rhine lyrics is their ambiguity.

haha, it certainly sounds that way doesn't it?
I was curious about the "go down easy" expression so I just typed it into a google search as I do with everything I'm curious about and I came across this poem/song... I have no idea if there's any similarity but I thought I'd share...
Go Down, Death
Oh, the spirit say, I want you for to
Go down, death, easy
I want you go down, death, easy
I want you go down, death, easy
And bring my servant home
Go down, death, go down
Preach my glory and my mighty name
I want you go down, I want you go down
And bring my servant home
Oh, the spirit say, I want you for to
Creep to the bedside, easy
I want you creep to the bedside easy
I want you creep to the bedside easy
And bring my servant home
Oh, the spirit say, I want you for to
Close the eyelids, easy
I want you close the eyelids, easy
I want you close the eyelids, easy
And bring my servant home
Oh, the spirit say, I want you for to
Cut loose the heart-strings, easy
I want you cut loose the heart-strings, easy
I want you cut loose the heart-strings, easy
And bring my servant home
Oh, the spirit say, I want you for to
Step to the graveyard, easy
I want you step to the graveyard, easy
I want you step to the graveyard, easy
And bring my servant home
Oh, the spirit say, I want you for to
Pass over hell-flames, easy
I want you pass over hell-flames, easy
I want you pass over hell-flames, easy
And bring my servant home
Oh, the spirit say, I want you for to
March up in the Kingdom, easy
I want you march up in the Kingdom, easy
I want you march up in the Kingdom, easy
And bring my servant home
