I am at least going to give this one a chance because:
1. It is not a cop, lawyer, doctor show
2. It has Merry from LOTR!

You may have something there. I can watch the occasional Law and Order or ER, but steer me to pure Fantasy anyday.
I came to the Whedon party a little late, but yes. I'm actively tivo-ing all the re-runs on cable and I just bought the firefly DVD, and season 4 Angel DVD.
As for x files, I have an interest, but due to time constraints, I made a conscious decision not to watch it. One can only watch so much TV before the rest of their life starts to suffer.

Well, I thought it was a good start but I definitely want to see more. They maybe should have gone for a longer premiere. Still, my interest was piqued!
Anyone catch Weiss as the dead pilot?
What are your guesses as to "the thing"?
What is up with the hobbit being maybe a troublemaker (running down the aisle, randomly vanishing and reappearing)?
Who is really annoyed already with the irritating not pregnant blonde girl?
What do you guys think?

Spoiler
And what about the dog?
I'm thinking the dog might either belong to a previous/current inhabitant of the island, or the dog IS the thing.
Was the hobbit the person running down the aisle before the plane started having trouble? The flight attendant tried to stop him.
When he went into the bathroom on the fragment of fuselage before the pilot was ripped away, he had no answer to the girl when she asked what was going on.
Yet, he was a recognizable rock star...hmmmmm...a likely disguise?
Cool show. I will keep watching. I wish it was on HBO...no commercials.
Oh and pregnant lady's tummy looked way too big I thought.

Fun show...I'll keep watching for a while. As it is right now I can't see this going very far. Maybe half a season. Perhaps it would have been better as a mini-series?
And who knows, they may surprise me...
Thoughts on the comments above:
I think they are being a bit to obvious with "the hobbit" being the troublemaker...A bit of a tease for the audience maybe. As for his disappearance into the bathroom, he probably had something "illegal" hidden in there and was anxious to get it back. The reason he jumped at the chance to go with them.
The dog is the wierdest factor for me...what is up with that? It even looked like it had a collar on in the first scene...I'll need to watch it again...
How pregnant is that woman supposed to be, I did not catch her answer when asked.
No idea what "the thing" is, but I was thinking back to Jurassic Park throughout the last 20 minutes of the show.
The HBO thing? Nah. I am tired of good shows being on pay channels. I can live with the commercials if I don't have to pay an extra $10 a month.
We'll see what happenes next week.

Sep 23 2004, 11:05 AM
Hi folks,
I think it's actually not that uncommon for passengers to "crate" their dogs and ship them in the lower baggage compartment while travelling. This would explain how the dog came to be on the island.
I can agree, that since we saw several shots of the dog, it could indicate his/her role of significance in the show, but somehow I doubt it. The other weak plot devices that I noticed: body falling from the locked door, pilot being found alive after 16 hours only to get eaten, the stock "heroic" doctor, the scowling closeup shot of who will undoubtedly later become the antagonist, etc. only seems to indicate nothing too stellar on the horizon for this show. Then, I have been wrong before.
Overall, I'd have to give the show a C+ if I was grading it. Only time will tell though.
Oh and btw, I've been hanging out for a few days reading the diverse topics here in this forum. I admit you're an intriguing lot. I'll be hanging out here and there in the future and joining in on some discussions as I have time. I hope we can get to know each other.

I missed it on my Tivo. Some crazy direct tv mixup, but luckily my fiance caught it on her Tivo, so I got to watch it anyway.
It was too short for a pilot. Isn't this supposed to the big new show ABC has a lot of hope and money behind? I hope it gets better.
The only other thing I can add that hasn't been said already, is that the timing was kind of off. The opening scene seemed to drag forever, and then everything was so lurchingly "stop-start" after that. Just when I was getting into it, it went off. And we didn't see the teaser that they put on all the commercials where the tail of the plane gets severed.
Oh, and why was the polit suddenly out of breath after being knocked out for 16 hours? That didn't make sense to me...

~~~~~SPOILER~~~~~long
Well, alot has been revealed it seems.
The dog:
Apparently the dog (a lab) belongs to the guy with the little kid. The guy (dad) was traveling with his son, taking him out of Australia due to the death of the kid's mom with whom he was living. The kids was out searching for the dog when he came upon a pair of handcuffs on the ground-------->
Pretty dark-haired girl:
After a scuffle with the tall blond guy with an attitude, a guy with knowledge of radios led a hike to the top of the mountain/cliffs to get better reception to try to signal help. Pdhg goes along. While this radio guy and attitude guy had been in a scuffle, accusations were made that each of them was a prisoner belonging to the handcuffs and everybody was very suspicious of everybody. The attitude guy pulls out a gun that he took from an unconscious passenger and shot a huge POLAR (POLAR) BEAR that attacked them on the mountainside. The pdhg grabbed the gun and emptied the bullets so no one would get hurt. Then she has a flash-back to the plane ride and we discover that SHE was the handcuffed prisoner------>
Back at the wreck:
Doc decides to remove shrapnal (sp?) from unconscious guys abdomen so he has a better chance of surviving. With help of curly-haired cool dude, he removes the piece upon which the unconscious guy 'comes to' and we realize he was the marshall in charge of the prisoner (pdhg). His first words are something like 'WHERE IS SHE?'--------->
Hobbit kid:
In flashbacks we see hobbit kid as the person running down the plane aisle away from flight attendants where he hides in the BR and proceeds to take out his stash and snorts a bump or two of (?) cocaine. The plane then starts to drop and his cocaine gets lost in the BR. (Reason for his looking in plane BR when discovering the pilot was still alive) Later we see him hiding in trees with his baggy that he had recovered from said BR and he was doing more snorting. Small baggy...can't last much longer--------->
Preggo woman:
She feels the baby kick------>
Husband who is super-protective of wife:
Remains reclusive, but goes into water to find fish which he prepares and offers to other survivors....repremands wife for having top button of her shirt open when other male survivors are near. When husband leaves she skowls at him and unbuttons her shirt again------->
Back to the radio guy and the group at the top of the mountain:
They hear a signal in French and English which the smarty pants non-preggo blond girl translates as a call for help from a woman. In English, a computer-voice recording is coded somehow with successive numbers to determine how many times the message was recycling without a response. The radio guy says it has been re-playing/retransmitting for 16 years------>
There's more I'm not including, I'm sure, but I can't remember .
I'm somewhat liking it, but I just can't see how this show will last more than one season, unless perhaps all the people are killed off and another plane crashes there. (cue twighlight zone music)
I think the young boyfriend of smarty-pants non-preggo girl is SO ADORABLE!
I watched last night, although I missed last week's. I liked it and will probably continue to watch, but I was sad that they had to kill a polar bear. (I know, I know, it was charging right at them, but still...)
The thing that will end up annoying me is that there will be all sorts of things that are probably never explained (like the polar bear in the tropical climate). Maybe he was on whatever crashed 16 years ago with the French-speaking lady.
Turns out my better half (good thing she's the better one, right?) Tivo'ed the second episode, so I got to watch it after all!
I have to say they should have definitely made it a two hour pilot (coincidentally both episodes are titled "Pilot" and labeled 1.01, and 1.02 on IMDB) so maybe it was a last minute decision to split them up, no? At any rate, we had one pretty boring first episode, and one pretty darned exciting second one. (Zayne, the commercials are a lot easier to take when you have Tivo--you just click three times for approximately ten seconds and they're gone, and Tivo syncs it right up to the beginning of the show again--it rocks, but makes the aforementioned "in-show" ads that more bothersome. ARGH! Incidentally, there were more commercial breaks, but they were shorter in duration. Don't know if anyone else noticed that.
Anyway, on to the show.
Has anyone considered that the Polar bear was being shipped on the plane? It's the only thing that makes sense. Secondly, can anyone say "FOOD?" I hope they at least drag the thing back and have some juicy grilled Klondike bars. (!)
And as for Kate, or "pretty dark haired girl" as Trudes calls her, her actual name is Evangeline Lily (I wonder if she pronounces it with a short or long "i"?), at any rate IMDB shows her as only having one other acting appearance, which I never watched. I have seen her before though. The more I think about it, I think it was a commercial. Can anyone help by naming ANYTHING else she's done? It's been driving me crazy since last week.
The so far the unnamed--yet the script calls him Jin-- Asian guy (Daniel Dae Kim) has been on TV shows like really major--most notably, for me, being several guest appearance on Angel until he got killed off during the pre-apocalypse. His character here seems pretty interesting what with his abusive attitudes toward his wife and his seemingly Rambo-esque nurturing techinques toward the other castaways.
Another notable, whom I remember from Antwone Fisher is Malcom David Kelly (the little boy with a lost dog). If he keeps it up, he'll turn into a great actor.
Harold Perrineau Jr, (lost dog boy's dad) was Link on the second and third Matrix movies, and although I didn't care too much for him there, he seems to be starting this series off on a better note (maybe it was the dreads). We'll see what the rest of the season makes does for him.
Most of the other players are as of yet unnamed on IMDB, so I can't comment on anyone else by name, but with the slight exception of the "bad guy" no one's really turned in any bad-ish acting so far. Wouldn't anyone else agree?
Well, enough about the actors, on to the plot.
Interesting turn of events with Kate turning out to be the criminal, and the older bald man obviously hiding something very big.
I have to wonder though, how many red herrings they're throwing us. The backgammon line was NOT a throw away line, BTW. That bit about it being the oldest game in the world, with one light and one dark opponent--kind of relevant, no?
The kid (Walt) reading the comic book that just so happened to contain a rampant Polar Bear--I don't know if that was just thrown in for fun, or if it will turn into a significant plot device. I'm a little bit sorry I read an article in EW last week about the show because it contained a pretty big spoiler. It said we'd see evidence of a big monster during the pilot, and then it disappears for the rest of the season. If that's true, then the show will have to take a much different turn from the way it's heading now. I hope they leave a little bit of mystique to it though. The elements of the unknown like the monster, and the bear as well as the 16 year old repeating message are what's keeping my interest.
Well, I could say more, but no one's probably reading this whole thing anyway (except probably the folks at ABC) so I 'll cut it here and let someone else throw in their thoughts.
Pleasant viewings,
Mark
I read a similar article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and I got the feeling the monster would stay a back-of-the-mind kind of evil for much of the first season, but they wouldn't address in head on much until later. That kind of thing happened in Alias all the time. I imagine we'll be kept entertained with other things.
Here's my theory: 16 years ago, a French zoo ship capsized in a nuclear-testing zone. All of the animals washed ashore to the island, and some funky mutating happened. You know, because of the nuclear stuff. So that unseen thing that goes crashing through the trees and munched on the pilot is . . .
a carniverous giraffe. Next I expect to see vicious man-eating penguins and possibly a terrifying army of snarling camels.
Eh? Eh? Good theory, right?
Just kidding (except if I turn out to be right. Then I'm dead serious.)-- I thought the second episode was so much better than the first. The tranceiver business with the repeating message, the convict reveal, and creepy bald backgammon man's "Want to know a secret?" scene have reeled me in.
Damn JJ Abrams.
