Howdy.

My name is Perry Pearson, though friends call me 'Pear'. The truly sycophantic friends call me "Supreme One" but I don't really think they mean it.
I was born on May 10, 1978, and grew up in the same house, in the same town (Troy, Montana), in the same pair of faded hand-me-down corduroys for 20 years.
I was a hyper little ADD bastard through elementary and high school, so ultimately my grades suffered enough that I didn't go to college, ending up in the Coast Guard instead. I joined the CG in 1998, and after boot camp found myself on an icebreaker, the Polar Star, tooling around in the Arctic for a summer while not touching solid ground in 4 months. There's not much to do in the Arctic, which is something you discover very quickly. After about a week I was amusing myself by tossing ice cubes in the deep fat fryer. After about a year or so I attended a navigation school in Yorktown Virginia, and then found myself stationed on a much smaller boat in Homer, Alaska. It was on a weekend trip to Anchorage that I discovered OTR at a Borders listening station. The album was Good Dog Bad Dog, and it's darker tone fit precisely with my mood at the time.
In 2001 I transferred to the San Francisco Bay Area, where I still reside and work for the Coast Guard as an operations specialist in a Search and Rescue coordination center. My office handles more search and rescue on a yearly basis than any other unit in the coast guard. While on watch I communicate directly with vessels in distress via VHF radio, broadcast weather and information, and keep communications schedules with numerous aircraft and boats. It's insanely busy sometimes. TOO busy. I will be getting out of the coast guard in 8-20 months (i'm undecided exactly when) and finally going to college with my newfound ability to pay attention without someone throwing a chalk eraser at my head.
All right, that's probably alltogether too much information, but there ya go.
That is a photo of myself I use as my avatar here, if only because at the time I had no other photos to use. If anyone knows of any interesting photos, I'd be glad for the suggestion.

I'm trying to become more active on the boards recently. I admit I was initially all for keeping the discussions to email, but in the last few weeks I've really seen the benefits of the forums, especially with the vines. I can be found at virtually any time of the day on the forums over at craigslist.org, which has destroyed any suggestion of a normal well-adjusted life I may have had.
Rock on with your bad selves. And stuff.

I think my brother is adrift somewhere along the coast near the bay area. Keep your eyes and nose open for a disoriented blond guy on a haggard sail board. You'll know him by the smell of stale Primo beer and the soggy fish taco in one hand. Just let him know that he needs to be at my house with his bicycle and touring gear in couple of weeks.

Thanks

welcome! glad you finally gave in and introduced yourself! your name kinda stuck!
enjoy your stay!

Hi Perry!

I hope you post more, as well. You've always been one to make me giggle. smile.gif

And why are we warning all the new apples of my viciousness? dry.gif

Anyhoo - welcome to the Orchard, Perry. smile.gif

Thanks, everyone!

Kylie, I don't know why everyone says your so vicious, but at least 5 others from the orchard have emailed me with urgent instruction not to make eye contact with you. I won't say who, but you might do well to be suspicious of those who ceaselessly admire your shoes.

Right on Perry! I liked your stories too. Welcome!

I'm strangely compelled to offer an update to my bio.

I left the Coast Guard last year, and my sanity is returning to me in leaps and bounds. I am now a college student in the SF Bay Area, flip-flopping between anthropology, biology, or ecology as a major. I work at Trader Joes, I'm dirt poor, but damn it, I'm happy. And fat. hoo boy, am I fat. Working at a grocery store is not good for one's waistline.

I've been lurking in the boards for quite some time, but just haven't been compelled to log in and contribute much in a long while. Nor have I had the time, juggling work and school. If I didn't live with my girlfriend, I'd never see her, either.

Welcome welcome welcome! Glad to have a new face. Love the pic.
I'll bet you have hours and hours of stories to tell. You should put them on paper once you have purged the stress of the career. Welcome to being a civilian again.

Welcome back Perry. Always loved that user name.

nice to see you back in these parts.

It’s nice to have another ADD kid onboard. I’m going back to school myself for library science, I figured I’d never pay attention to only one thing so why not have access to everything. blink.gif

But I digress.

Welcome! I hope to hear some of the stories everyone’s been talking about.

Perry--glad to see that all has gone well for you since leaving the Coast Guard--from one former Coastie to another--I was in the CG many, many moons ago---I only did one four year entlistment stint---I had started out to be a radio operator too, but back in my day--you still had to learn and be proficient in Morse Code, something that try as I may, I could not do!!!!! The code just sounded like so much noise to me, while for many of my fellow students--they were banging out messages in code in no time at rapid speed.

Hope all goes well in your studies--you are in a great place--I was in Petaluma twice for both "A" school twice--the first time for radio operator and later for "Subsistence Specialist" (now Food Specialist).

I loved to hang out in San Fran whenever I had the chance.

I spent the rest of my CG time in South Florida-first in Key West and later after SS "A" School, in Miami Beach. Not too hateful-----

Glad to see another former Coastie is an OTR fan as well---

Have fun in school Perry and all the best in finding a career and employment that is fullfilling to you....
