Are there any musical differences between the IRS re-release of TWHF and the pre-IRS version that the website is currently selling?

Thanks,

Mike

pre-IRS Scampering Songs release:
-there's a funky, instrumetal "untitled track" after track 14. that is not the same as the [untitled hidden track] on the IRS version

On the IRS version:
-track 11. Flydance, was replaced w/ a longer, live version
-track 15. Radio Coda Live is added - which is a very cool snippet of the end of an extended version of Like A Radio - go Ric!
-track 16. Downfall is added (Ric instrumental)**
-track 17. [untitled hidden track] (which are called "The vocal and piano bits" in the booklet notes & I'm thinking I've read something somewhere it was Downfall II, but don't quote me on that cause, well, what do I know really...)

** funny note by Linford in IRS booklet "Downfall is 2:45 when travelling at the speed of light." (it's really 3:32)

Welcome to the Orchard, Mike.

How about Patience? Any musical differences between the releases?

On the IRS release they moved Circle of Quiet up from track 10 to track 3. I liked the flow of the album better on the pre-IRS Scampering Songs release, personally.

I hear that and I'm not a complete completist. Tossing in the ol' "Out of Print" thing is a really kick in the money-pants as well. If you want the originals with the booklets that is. I paid $26 on eBay for an original Patience (just had to have that booklet i did) several years back. Oh, the things we do for love [of great music]. wink.gif

Just found one for $18 on eBay. Buy It Now option! Woo-hoo!

No kidding ... now to find the original TWHF with artwork ...

Disregard this post. Double posted from above. (Of course, subsequently edited to read what you are reading right now.) wink.gif

Isn't some of the tracks lacking on the newer version? A Gospel Number and Jack's Valentine? Or am I totally off?

I don't have the IRS-version.

That's Good Dog, Bad Dog you are thinking about. I love both versions.

OK, I never even thought about there being different versions.

So it seems I have the IRS release of TWHF and Scampering Songs release of Patience (w/ booklet).

Now to look for each of the other versions...without spending crazy amounts of money biggrin.gif

Just to be annoyingly complete ;P

There are Four releases of TWHF.

1) SS version with nothing printed on the velum, 15 tracks (one not listed) released ca. 1991

2) SS version with album and band info printed on the velum--otherwise identical to SS release number one, released around the same time

3) IRS release with no velum and a bigger shot of the front page artwork, 17 tracks (one not listed) ca. 1995 Also note the second "l" added to the word 'Til when the apostrophe was dropped. In theory, this would be the most rare since it's the only version of the four to have the extra songs, but in reality, I think it's the version one most commonly comes across.

4) SS "no booklet" release from the band which reinstated the "Paul and Virginia on the swing" painting by Cot to the back insert, released ca. 1995 and reverted back to the original 14 tracks, but still used the "Till" version of the title from the IRS release of the same name.

And that's not even counting the cassette and promo versions that MUST be included in my collection. BTW, if anyone has extras...

Dude, you're right! I had forgotten about this little snippet of a song due to the fact that I never listen to the SS version. I like the IRS version better. I'm amending my last post.

Thanks M; you rock. wink.gif

So ... is the "pre-IRS" version being sold through the band's website the original version with the studio version of "Flydance" (instead of IRS's live version)? The pastemusic.com website seems to indicate otherwise ...

Anyone have a definitive answer as to what will happen if I plunk $15 for the "pre-IRS" version?
DustyVolume
My discs are at home now, and I've never opened my "no booklet" "pre IRS" version that I got from the band back in '97 er so, so I cannot say definitively, but I would risk a guess with approximately 80% faith that you are correct--the "Pre IRS" version that was released post IRS would have the same version that the original SS version had on it.

But if you're still in doubt, just get both. Join the cadre of completist OTR fans. It'll give you a purpose when you're rummaging through those used bins and bored on ebay! smile.gif

Mike,
I went to Paste's site and looked at the description of TWHF. I think they just copied that review from anther site and it's not specifically tailored to what they're selling. I still think if you want Fly Dance Live, you'll have to find a copy of the IRS release out there somewhere.

Maybe you can ask someone here who recently bought this release and see what they got.

I have versions 2 and 4. I want version 3, though, for the extra songs. I'll save my obsession with obtaining this disc for after I've managed to afford a copy of TDNOTY. smile.gif
DustyVolume
So, are your versions 2 and 4 identical musically, Lib?

Dunno which version exactly, but my brother has a pre-IRS CD signed by the band.

This is actually a snippet from Linford's senior recital, I believe.
b_lachey@hotmail.com
Did he drive a tractor or something for his recital? It's menacing sounding, not super "musical". Maybe we're thinking of two different songs.

Nope, I'm pretty sure that's it. You can only hear him faintly in the background...as if it were an old hand-held recorder and the person was sitting in the back row... (My grandfather actually used to do this at my band concerts when I was in jr. high...tractors all around!)
DustyVolume
you two are talking about two different songs. One goes "tinkle tinkle tinkle" (like a piano), and the other one goes "Whaaaahhha WWhoommmmmm whhaaahhhh" (like a tractor).

HTH!

But I'm hearing both of those things on the same track...at the same time...!
DustyVolume
Oh, well, maybe my memory is off then. I do know that one of those songs is his senior recital though. So you're probably right!

I was just giving TWHF a really good listen again last night. What an awesome album! You can really feel the energy behind it.
