I wonder why they left out Bothered and Long Lost Brother? Time constraints on the CD? Not happy with the aural quality? Why these two songs? The CD is the entire set sans the second and third song of the show.
Thoughts?

That's very sad news. "Lifelong Fling" was one of the highlights of their performance at Cornerstone, with an extended section in which Linford and Paul seemed to be dueling with solos, Linford on keyboard and Paul on vibes....

Sorry, my bad, I meant to type Long Lost Brother. Wrong (LL) song! It's Bothered and LLB that were omitted.
And do you mean to say that Paul Moak was at Cstone 2004?

Yeah, I'm pretty bummed about the omission of "Bothered", but I'm pretty sure it was due to time constraints. *Something* had to go, but personally, I would've rather seen something like "She" or "Changes Come" dropped. Just my humble opinion.
I think Jeffrey Overstreet was referring to Cornerstone 2003. Matt Slocum played guitar with Over the Rhine at Cornerstone this year.

Has anyone concluded with reasonable certainty what show was taped for "Changes Come"? Is it Cornerstone 2003? Or am I misunderstanding?

Yeah, I agree about "Bothered." That should've gone in place of "Ohio," which, while cool to see in person, on CD is essentially identical to the studio version.
(oh, and if we're gonna get technical, they could've fit six more minutes of music on the CD...

OK, mine finally came today, so i'm gonna go listen.

In a word... Spiritual.
I just got my copy today. All I can say is WOW! I'd give anything to see Paul and Will back with Karin and Linford.
Also, perhaps, Drew could persuade Karin and Linford to make the live version of "Bothered" one of the monthly rarities???
PS. If you're reading this Karin and Linford.... Thank you! Thank you! This music is sooooo inspiring!

i really am loving this album - i have some favorites already, and i think it'll be stuck in the car cd player for the next month. but i'm not real happy with this 'all i need is everything.' it's fine musically... but it just seems a bit too peppy- like they're playing it because it's old, and they thought they'd play something old, but only if they could spruce it up some to keep the energy going through the set. i guess i miss its heart. maybe they're just not in that place emotionally, anymore, but there doesn't to be any struggle in this version of the song.
it's one of my favorite otr songs - so poignant, and i feel like i'm right there in that spot so often.

And you're whispering to me,
time to get up off my hands and knees,
'cause if I beg for it, it won't come.
I find nothing but table crumbs.
My hands are empty. God I've been naive.
All I need is everything.
Inside, outside, feel new skin.
All I need is everything.
Feel the slip and the grip of grace again.

Changes Come is the jewel of the whole CD, although When I Go runs a close 2nd.
How you would leave Changes Come off a CD called "Changes Come" I don't understand.
I too missed LLB. I would, without a doubt, cut "Show Me" in favor of LLB.

I have to respectfully disagree with you on that one, friend.
Lifelong Sunshine
is my lifelong sunshine right now.
I was in the bathroom last night just before bed and random thoughts were running through my feeble head and this song just popped into my stream of consciousness. It was one of those "speed of light realizations" that I have and I realized (again) just what a goddess Karin is on stage. And I'm not just referring to her looks (I mean she is a goddess in that respect too) but by goddess, I mean how totally powerful she is. Maybe she's more like a superhero...I don't know, but if she is, then her power is to bend time and space with her voice. You know kinda how Neo stretches and ripples reality when he flexes his muscles in the matrix. Karin has that power with her voice. When she's singing, she can leap tall buildings, smash through solid steel walls, even slow time to a standstill---and sometimes, I feel light headed like I could pass out just from the sound of her voice. Hmmm. I sound a little like I'm crazy don't I? Oh well, it's real to me whether I can acurately describe it or not...

The World Can Wait is the highlight for me. Those pounding drums and Karin's plaintive opening yell really marked the point in the sets I saw last summer/fall where they "kicked it up a notch". This show was no exception (and I'm a big FFR fan anyway).
But it's all good.

Highlight for me right now is "Changes Come" it was never a favorite of mine on OHIO but this live version just gives me goosebumps everytime I listen...when Karin lets loose and just starts wailing at the end it's just SO powerful I love it!
This whole cd is amazing, can't wait for more :-D

Big fan of Spinning, that's what I am: 1) it kicked me unexpectedly in the butt as the first song off Cutting Room Floor, 2) when they offered up the Taft '02 version as an mp3 rarity a while back it sounded just like the cd version!, and 3) as the opener on the Live cd, again, it sounds so freaking much like the cd version - yet, better. Oi.
And I love Nobody #1 & Lifelong Sunshine. But I gotta say, my favorite(s) on this cd, easy picks, are songs 9 - 13. That whole last chunk of Changes Come rocks my sandals off!!
The World Can Wait is just freaking awesome live w/ full band. It. Rocks.
When I Go breaks tiny peices off me with it's beauty each time I hear it - this version is fantastic. She practically rolls each syllable off with such longing you feel drunk by the end of the song.
B.P.D - YEAH YEAAH YEEEAAHH YEEAAHH!! No need to say more on this one.
Cruel & Pretty was my first OHIO crush and still one of my favorites of the album. I'm so glad it made the live cd.
Chages Come - I'm with CathedralHeat on this one. I like the album version fine. Powerful song. But the live cd version - holy shit. To say the least. The drums pound my head and karin's wail. Oi, karin's wail. *sigh*
What I really like about them putting this cd out for us is that we all know what Karin's capable of when she opens her mouth and that power was understated on OHIO. Besides short bursts that slapped you in the face on B.P.D., all letting loose/wailing was sorta background. Nobody #1, Changes Come, How Long Have You Been Stoned... You could feel it behind the song, almost touch it on some. Even Hometown Boy in person, acoustic or full-band, the "fly... why... try..." parts came charging out of her throat with more thundering roar than the album version. It floors me, Karin's vocal prowess. Always has, always will.
I have no complaints about OHIO, I don't want to be misunderstood, It just makes putting out a live cd even more kick-ass. It really is like a musical postcard saying "Wish you were here." Thank you Linford, thank you Karin.

For the record
I blogged about the album a few days back and I still stand by my comments... it's my favorite Over the Rhine CD thus far.
I hope that this particular OtR combo comes back together for future endeavors. But I'll take OtR in any manifestation, just so long as they keep writing, recording, and producing albums... just so long as Karin's singing and Linford's playing.

So very, very good. My favorite moment of the CD is so far is right before Nobody #1: "This is how a white girl raps in Ohio." Classic.
The drums on TWCW: Mind boggling fabulous makesmewanttohitthestteringwheelinmycartotherhythm great.
"She" is beautiful. It's just a beautiful song, so heartbreaking live.
There's an electricity to this show that you can hear beyond the notes. I can definitely see why they chose this show to record live.

I finished my thorough critical listen last night and I have to say AWESOME! I am very impressed with Paul Moak, Rick Plant and Will Sayles. Nothing against previous members of the supporting cast, I'd like to see OtR stay with these three very talented musicians for a while. I think they really "added to" rather than supported the OtR arrangements. TWCW and Changes Come are reminiscent of the old shoegaze movement like Catherine Wheel and others. It was really moving to hear OtR with such lush power behind Karin's awesome vocals and Linford's graceful keys. In the end, I think this album is a good move for them. The live performance is nice balance to the high production quality of FfR and the earthyness of Ohio. It accomplishes both the "sonic snapshop" it intended and hopefully previews what we'll see from them next.
I give it a 4 3/4 stars out of five.

"shoegaze movement"? Never heard of that... Can you explain it?

"shoegaze movement"? Never heard of that... Can you explain it?
Sure. Shoegaze music is a loose term applied to bands like Catherine Wheel, Slowdive, Ride and lush. Here the music is notably a "wall of sound washing through your speakers like an ocean tide" as one person described it. The composition of the music is not necessarily in lyrical melodies; rather, it is in layering sound, chords, rythms and effects to the point where no single melody is discernable but the cacophony renders its own lyrical form. Though rooted in chord progressions or changes, they are more "felt" than syncopated. The ending of Changes Come on this album is very reflective of this sound.
The term shoegaze is applied to the genre of music more for its performance than its style. "Shoegaze" bands spend a great deal of their performance fiddling with their guitar pedals and other equipment on stage. As such there is little eye contact with the audience because they are particularly interested in producing this lush sound from all of their stage gizmos. From the audience perspective though it looks as if they are looking down all the time....at their shoes....hence the term: shoegaze.
If you are interested in music with that is entirely the last 3 minutes of Changes Come, I highly recommend Slowdive "Souvlaki" and Catherine Wheel "Ferment."
As an aside, I once attended a show of local "shoegaze" bands including a remarkble ensemble called Allison's Halo. The music in this warehouse-turned concert hall was so loud it sounded like a jet engine revving inside the building. However, there among the comfy couches of the loft, my wife and I both fell asleep to amazement of our friends because of how loud the music was (we are talking permanent hearing damage levels). The show was called "Beautiful Noise" and remains one of our fondest memories together.
I hope that helps.

Drew,
Check out the Catherine Wheel cut, "Black Metallic". It received plenty of air play in WOXY's rotation in the mid to late 90's. I think it is one of the most accessible pieces of shoe gaze music for folks who are unacustomed to the sonic impact of the idiom. Try it out with headphones or on a good automobile sound system when you are a bit frosted or sitting in a parking lot waiting for someone. Let the music chill on you and just when you are about to wander off in somatic bliss the big change with exploding guitar will rip you off into a full body rush... oooooh dude!

after i read this thread, i listened more closely and still agree. i'm trying to imagine it as a less-intense, more-lilting (?) song, trying to find a different meaning in it... but i can't.
