i really can't believe no one's posted this, yet. i checked the music forum twice, so don't yell at me if i'm just blind...

Someone watched
High Fidelity recently.
Off the top of my head:
The Beatles -
RevolverThe Beach Boys -
Pet SoundsYes -
Close To The Edge (I think I prefer
Relayer, but I'd hate to go the rest of my life without hearing "And You And I", so this album gets the nod)
Thunder -
LiveDream Theater -
Scenes From A Memory

not recently, but i do own high fidelity. :)
no, i just heard a track off of yankee hotel foxtrot on the radio, and realized i loved the album enough that it needed to be on my list.
my trouble is picking an otr album - there are a couple that i'm sure will never be on this list, but others fight constantly for their spots! til we have faces, patience, eve, gdbd, ffr, dnoty - i really couldn't do without any of those. but - five only!

I know. It bugs me. 5 isn't enough. I would die without an OTR album...but I'd also die without Yes, the Beatles, and Brian Wilson, so...why am i getting all frustrated about such a silly question?

five!? geez... 50 would be tough... but here goes...
Chroma Key -
Dead Air For Radios (no matter what, this one is always #1)Pink Floyd -
Wish You were Here (that comment addressed to the rest of my CD collection, obviously)Faith No More -
King For a Day, Fool For a LifetimeTori Amos -
Boys For PeleElliott Smith -
Either/Orthat was unfair. unfair, indeed.

I'm cheating and there's nothing you can do to stop me:
The current five I can't go two days without listening to:
1. Sam Phillips- A Boot and a Shoe
2. Tess Wiley- Not Quite Me
3. Patty Griffin- Impossible Dream
4. Lisa Germano- Lullaby for Liquid Pig
5. Sigur Ros- Agaetis Byrjun
And my all-times:
1. Aimee Mann- Lost in Space
2. Sam Phillips- A Boot and a Shoe (and I'm not even kidding, kids, go buy this album if you haven't)
3. Over the Rhine- Ohio
4. Radiohead- OK Computer
5. Sixpence None the Richer- Sixpence None the Richer
6. Wilco- Summerteeth
7. Jeff Buckley- Grace
AUGH! I can't stop! Why do I subject myself to these lists?

U2-Achtung Baby
OK, I lied...I can't do 5...
5 more--
Jimi Hendrix--Are you Experienced?
Moby-Play
Cowboy Junkies--The Trinity Sessions
The Doors--Morrison Hotel
Led Zeppelin--Physical Graffiti (can I have a double album? If not, I'll just take the second disc...)

Absolutely impossible, but I'll try anyway. Off the top of my head, in no particular order:
the innocence mission - Glow
Over the Rhine - Eve
Joni Mitchell - Court and Spark
Suzanne Vega - Solitude Standing
Victoria Williams - Loose
Why do I love listening to women so much? Someone explain that to me. It's like the Lilith Fair in here.
If I got to take ten, I'd add:
Rich Mullins - A Liturgy, A Legacy and a Ragamuffin Band
Julie Miller - Blue Pony
The Choir - Wide-Eyed Wonder
Adam Again - Dig
77s - Sticks and Stones

Five is tough, buit I think I can do this.
An American Heritage of Spirituals - Mormon Tabernacle Choir
Good Dog Bad Dog - Over the Rhine
James Taylor - James Taylor
Led Zeppelin - BBC Sessions (a double, but I would choose the second disc if I could only take one)
Nickel Creek - Nickel Creek
I think that having some variety will be the best option.

4. Sam Phillips, A Boot and a Shoe (my newest love)

jp/p: Nope. Had to send my $15 dollars to her Dad just like everybody else

. I actually kind of like doing it that way: it seems so indie.
It is frustrating the complete lack of attention she gets when it's clear she has fans everywhere. I've been meaning to send an angry email to the Paste Music people but I haven't gotten around to it. Maybe that's it: all her fans are just lazy.

rulerofsubdivision1057:
No need to ream the folks at Paste. They're good people.
As it happens, I understand Tess is quite happy with her lot, having seen all manner of 'success' and notoriety in the past, she is touring rather extensively in the part of the world she loves. And, meanwhile, her albums are selling like hotcakes at an Indie House of Pancakes.
Sometimes America's sales reports just aren't the mark of success that everyone's looking to and I, for one, am glad to see her happy with as much.
On sending money to artists directly, I agree, it's a wonderfully homespun way of helping both artists and their fans to maintain a healthier perspective about what each of our roles are in this spirit-exchange that we call music.
One of my favourite artists, in fact, doubles as a bartender four months out of every year that he's not working the roads in his pickup, belting out his songs in dumpy roadside dives (very often to the tune of less than $100 a night).
Another bloke I like a lot runs the eternally hokey ToolBarn.com. He is happy and doing quite well in his Omaha scene. Truth is, he'll be as successful and as bad as he wants to be as the father of anti-rockstardom.
And more power to him.
So, really, as far as some of these musicians are concerned, a lack of attention isn't a bad thing at all. It's a good thing. It's a rich thing. It's a medium in which to focus, to concentrate the passions and inhabit meaningful perspectives.
True, these guys and dolls aren't in the majority of musicians, but they do exist and a good many of them are quite happy as such.
I know I'm happy for them.
Daffodils,
[jp/p].

5? are you out of your F**king mind???
ok, so here's my problem with High Fidelity...they clearly state that you can't be a serious person if you have less than 500 albums. and I agree. but then he goes around making "top 5 lists" all the time, which is fine, but anyone who
really has 500+ albums knows that a "top 5" is ridiculously impossible. laughably impossible. "ma'am, you've had twins. which one would you like to keep?"
1) Over the Rhine - Good Dog, Bad Dog
2) Perlman's "Cinema Serenade" (w/ "Cinema Paradiso" theme)
3) Sarah Masen - The Dreamlife of Angels
4) Sixpence None the Richer - This Beautiful Mess
5) Kansas - Drastic Measures
There are better albums out there than Kansas Drastic Measures, I know... but it was such a huge part of my life that I have to include it. and you make me leave out things by The Sundays, and The Smiths, and U2, and Pet Sounds fer f*cksake. and I cannot, in good conscience leave out Undercover's "Branded", or Innocence Mission's first CD... just physically can't be done. I'll shoot myself, right in the face, I swear to god... I couldn't sleep at night knowing I left those and so many more essentials off the "top 5".
that's it, I'm putting an end to this madness right now...

First, I was so happy to see all the quality picks. Just to know that other people have heard of Dream Theater makes me smile.
Truthfully, if I could have ONLY five, I'd probably cheat and burn five mixes on my Mac. But here's my best "fair" attempt...
"Vertigo" -by- Jump, Little Children
"Black Sheep" -by- Martin Sexton
"1200 Curfews" -by- Indigo Girls
"Songs in the Key of Life" -by- Stevie Wonder
"Want: One" -by- Rufus Wainwright

1. Over the Rhine - Good Dog, Bad Dog
2. Switchfoot - Learning to Breathe
3. Guster - Lost and Gone Forever
4. Radiohead - OK Computer
5. Rolling Stones - Forty Licks
My music, like my moods, has a very large scope. Music, for me, is simultaneously an emotional experience and a heart-felt expression--if I'm going to have only five albums, I want to make sure I have as much of that scope covered as possible.

OK, I am a music phenatic (did I spell that right?).
And if I had the money I would own thousands of CD's.
But also being an artist, I am always critiquing music.
Since I do this, it is pretty easy to narrow it down to five top albums.
Now, top 100 would be hard since when I get down to the 50 or 75th CD, they all tend to have their perfections and their flaws so it's hard to choose which is better.
So stop complaining and critique those albums and come up with your top five albums.
It's not like your actually going to be sent to a desert island with these albums.
We're just trying to find out your top 5.
1. The Beatles - Abbey Road
2. Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced?
3. Led Zepplin - IV
