Morrissey - You Are the Quarry

Only listened to half so far... VERY good
[jp/p]
I don't buy physical CDs very often, but I did splurge on Modest Mouse's latest offering, "Good News for People Who Love Bad News," when I saw it selling for $7.89 w/ free shipping.

EDIT: Make that Pedro the Lion's "Achilles Heel." A wonder album. Glad to have it.

I did buy the Sigur-Ros rickitickitavi or whatever the heck. Left it in the bag for over a week so I returned it. Guess I didn't want it that bad. Before that, I think it was Ollabelle, but I can't be certain.

Linford's Unspoken Requests, bought at Canal St. My last actual store purchase was Indigo Girls - All That We Let In a couple weeks after release.

Even with several out there I'd really like to have, I haven't been up to buying cd's lately.

A visit to the used cd store today had me leaving w/ Tori Amos - Under the Pink.

So much for not being up for buying cd's lately. blink.gif

Morrisey is one that I have never given a listen simply because I'm not crazy about pop. However, I was just reading about him in EW this weekend. Might have to give him a try.

Get some Smiths albums first...better than any of his solo stuff (haven't heard the new one though). I don't care for the Smiths as much as some of the Manchester bands that came after (I'm kind of loyal to the Stone Roses), but their influence is undenyable, and they had some great stuff.

It's Volume six of "The Bootleg Series."

Awesome cd especially if you are into Dylan. He is very laid back here and interacts very well with his audience. A good fun cd with a message without being overly preachy.

I've had that '64 show on a bootleg for a few years. Awesome concert. smile.gif

I went out on my lunch break and bought the new Tori Amos DVD...12.99, not bad. smile.gif

Sigur Ros Hlemmur Soundtrack
How is this one?

I don't know how it is... it's on mail order from the UK (SR's web store is run through Radiohead's W.A.S.T.E. store).

Sigur Rós have a total of (at least) nine (9) CDs... in, I think, this order...
  • Von
  • Von Brigdi
  • Ágćtis byrjun
  • Svefn-g-englar EP
  • Angels of the Universe Soundtrack (w/ Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson)
  • Rimur EP (w/ Steindor Andersen)
  • Hlemmur Soundtrack (just re-issued through their website)
  • ( )
  • Untitled #1 & 9 (single/DVD)
  • Ba Ba Ti Ki Di Do EP
All but Von, Von Brigdi, Rimur, and Hlemmur are available in the U.S. at places like Best Buy.

Rimur is available ever so often on eBay... but it sucks (Steindor Andersen's fault).

Von, Von Brigdi, and Hlemmur are all available on eBay or Sigur Rós' webstore: http://shop.sandbag.uk.com/SigurRos/

I think the most recent was Allison Moorer's new one The Duel, which I picked up at ear X-stacy in Louisville after Bill played it for me. This is definitely becoming one of my 2004 favorites (thanks Bill!).
Lynne
Alanis' latest ... first song was kinda noisy, but I liked the next two (all I got through on my short drive) and, from reading through some of the lyrics, I am looking forward to the rest of the album.

: )

How does she get away with bending/inflecting those words to fit the rhythm of the song?

Funny...the first song is my favorite on the disc. Probably because it rocks harder than most of her stuff, and that's never a bad thing. smile.gif That's the kind of rock tune I've been hoping to hear from her for ages.

QUOTE

She sings lots of syllables really fast, like in "Unsent." laugh.gif

I think on this album she's toned it down a bit...a lot of the lyrics on Under Rug Swept felt forced into the music, like she just scribbled down the words and was determined to put them as is into the song, which made it sound a bit awkward to me with all those words crammed in there.

On the new one, I think she's focused more on the songwriting aspect, and making sure most of the words she sings do something melodically as well as lyrically, something I think Glen Ballard played a big part in on the first two albums that was missing on her third. There's a few filler tracks on So Called Chaos, but overall I think it's a solid album, and much better than the last one. (SFIJ is still my favorite though)
[jp/p]
Speaking of Alanis' latest offering (which I've only been able to listen to in thirty second samples via iTunes) I'm pretty excited about a couple of her songs as well.

I can echo your sentiment, Lynne, on the charge of her first track being a bit on the noisy side, but I did find as I worked my way through the rest of the album that I was awfully fond of 'This Grudge' and 'Doth I Protest Too Much,' if only for her killer execution of the latter song's namesake in the chorus.

I had seen the track listing for the album some time before it released and I found, for whatever reasons, that I was particularly excited about a song called 'Doth I Protest Too Much.'

Something tells me it might be the rarity (or irony) of Mizz Morissette's apology that strikes a new and curious chord in my brain. So I'll be listening closely as the opportunities arise to do so.

In any case, I'm thrilled to slowly make this album my own. Glad you're getting to listen to it.

Tops,
[jp/p].

I love Rilo Kiley . . .

Hello, Rilo Kiley fan.

Jenny Lewis rules. And "The Wizard" rocks which, by default, I suppose means Fred Savage rocks as well.

I've not seen Mizz Lewis live as Rilo Kiley just yet, but I'm very, very proud to say I was able to catch her on The Postal Service's brief tour last year, which a friend and I drove some 12 hours to attend.

And well worth it, too, I might add.

You mentioned Jem, of whom I am, at the very least, a marginal fan. In fact, I was hooked the day I listened to her EP that visited stores just before the debut release. I was torn to buy the $5 CD then and I'm torn to buy the $10 CD now.

My fear is in purchasing a Dido-meets-electronica album that I'll spin mercilessly on my CD or MP3 player for the next four or five weeks straight and after which I'm afraid I won't ever listen to again.

As a test against this fear, I downloaded Jem's bestseller, "They," a couple of weeks ago, which I am glad to report hasn't been played so much yet as to grate on my nerves the way, say, Dido's first album (unfortunately) does for me now.

For the sake of trivia, did you know Mizz Jem's aforementioned song was featured throughout the last episode of "Crossing Jordan"?

Because I'm a huge "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" fan, I lazed my way into an episode of NBC's reorganised lineup, which now includes "Crossing Jordan" on Sunday. I'd only watched the show once or twice before, but it was fun to hear Jem's song interjected throughout the episode, even if occasionally tight fit.

Here's to wishes,
[jp/p].

Rufus Wainwright and Sigur Ros and Sam Phillips fans all here... sigh... I love this board.

I have the early Sigur Ros stuff, and I like it. I think AB is their best, though. Got the new Tiki Tiki (whatever) EP off of iTunes. Not too crazy about it. A little too abstract and noisy.

But all the early stuff is cool. Von and Von Brigdi are both really interesting.

Hello, DJDelicious.

Keep an eye out on deepdiscountcd.com. They are generally well-known for having great prices and year-round free shipping.

I've been really happy with their service, bearing in mind, of course, that one cannot expect an item tagged "free shipping" to show up in much less than a week.

The Modest Mouse CD was a bit of an exception, I think, in being under $8. I don't visit DeepDiscountCD often enough to know that they do this on a regular basis, but I get the impression that select new releases (first week or so?) will be hocked for significantly less than most vendors, just to show sales (perhaps with special pricing/permission from the distributors).

I'm no music biz mogul, so this is all conjecture.

At any rate, add them to your Internet strip mall, if you haven't already.

Best,
[jp/p].

(P.S. - deepdiscountdvd.com has some pretty stellar deals, too, on DVDs, with the free shipping offer being present there as well.)
