Keith, When you get to it, let me know how that 4th Disc is,
with all the unreleased stuff on it, so it will give me a reason to finally get it.
Nick Drake was an amazing artist.

Sure, Kent. I ordered the collection used from Amazon sellers, a little pricey as you said but only a few dollars more than buying the 3 CDs I don't have (and know I must have) individually.

Conversation here about an hour ago:

Me [holding out Pink Moon CD]: Have you ever heard this guy Nick Drake? He died back in 1972 but I only really discovered his music last week.

son Steve: No, what kind of music is it?

Me: It's just him and his guitar on this album, but he's amazing!

Steve: Okay, I'll listen to it now.

[short interlude after which the song Pink Moon is heard from Steve's room]

Steve [emerging from room]: Yeah this guy is f***ing great*, one of his songs is in Garden State!

I'm watching a DVD with a couple of BBC specials about his life and career someone was kind enough to send me now. smile.gif

Now Kent you know I can't resist a new Tim Easton album, especially with those two guests on it! smile.gif

One of my PattyPals® is a huge Mason Jennings fan, but for some reason I wasn't all that thrilled with the compilation she sent me.

Miranda Lee Richards arrived here a few days ago btw (not Miranda Lee herself, sadly, but her album). She has a lovely voice, but I'd have to say most of her album is pretty unimpressive.

Nick Drake's Fruit Tree collection arrived yesterday. Since I've spent most of the past two days sick in bed, I've had some time to listen to it. I would definitely recommend Time of No Reply to anyone who already has his three official releases. It has a number of excellent and unique songs on it, and even the not-so-great ones feature Nick's sensational guitar playing. The tracks are mostly just voice and guitar, which is fine by me. However, the more recent release Made to Love Magic has some of the same tracks plus a couple of other unreleased songs and a cool acoustic version of River Man, and can be downloaded from iTunes for only $8. Unfortunately the latter release also features orchestral arrangements recorded in 2003 and dubbed onto Time of No Reply and I Was Made to Love Magic. Drake obviously never heard these arrangements, and I'm not sure he would have approved of them (I prefer the acoustic versions myself).

For anyone considering springing for the out-of-print Fruit Tree boxed set: The booklet is very nice, but be advised these are NOT the remastered versions of the albums. The remastered Pink Moon I bought initially sounds vastly better than the original transfer in this set, so I'll most likely be downloading the remastered versions of his first two albums from iTunes - the CDs are pretty pricey at $19 each from Amazon.

It's a joy finally getting to know this guy's work, he really was a musical genius.

2 stores in Rockford and 5 in Chicago- even bringing a bag of CDs to the OtR/Hem concert, because of a record store a block away from the venue. And I found a ton of goodies-
Denise James- Promises
Jason Nesmith- Potrait (yes he is Michael Nesmith's son)
Spokane- Leisure and Other Songs
Kelly Hogan and the Pine Valley Cosmonauts- Beneathe the Country Underdog (she is backing vocals for Neko Case on the tour)
Listing Ship- Time to Dream
Sugarplum Fairies-Country International Records
Lewis and Clarke- Bright Light EP
Rachel Cantu- Run All Night
Lovespirals- Free and Easy
The Machine in the Garden-One Winter's Night
Iodine- Maximum Joy- (Low like)
Codeine- Barely Real (also Low like)
Jon Rauhouse- Steel Guitar Rodeo (he's the pedal steel guy on Neko Case's tour)
so that was it- 7 stores 13 CD's- a bunch lopped off my 'list', and most were used except 2, (and some of these will make their way onto my mixes)
and then the wonderful concert to top it all off.

Virgin on Michigan & Grand is one of my personal favs, but I dig serveral others within walking distance of the House of Blues as well. Virgin's import section always hurts me... Another cool one is Rock Records on Washington.

Lately the only stuff I've been compelled to buy has been from the import section. I have a hard time even looking at it anymore, it makes me so frustrated that none of that stuff gets released here.

I just had a conversation yesterday on imports vs. US labels with a music store manager here in the 'Ville. Blue Note is really dropping the ball on re releasing/remastering a lot of old albums/stock. The Japanese have often remastered old Blue Note albums twice by the time Blue Note in the US releases the album remastered. I just hate paying $25-30 bucks per CD for a Japanese album when I could potentially get it for $11.99 here in the States. Not to mention I"m getting pretty pissed off at EMI, who bought Blue Note a couple of years ago and is part of the Sony family. Every new Blue Note CD has some crap about "We thank you for buying this record. Please do not upload this or copy this disc... blah blah blah". I bought the dang album already, quit insulting me. It almost makes me WANT to revert to my old pirate ways. Arrrrrgh mateys.

Well this weekend I was going for the Guiness Book of World Records, and came close.
All told I got 22 CD's on Saturday. Of course your'e thinking, this guy is crazy, well yes I am.
Anyway of the 22, 17 were .95 cents apiece, they were in a new bin that was just put out, and most were '06 releases of a bunch of nobodies I've never heard. I just went by the promo sticker on the front that talked about the artist and who they compared to. If any mention of Belle and Sebastian, Nick Drake, Iron and Wine, etc showed up I put it in the basket. So I figured, for 95 cents each, I've got to find a few that would make it worth it, all for a little more than the price of 1 CD. Amongst the finds were Starflyer 59 and the Czars, and I did find at least 8 CD's in the bins that I had previosly purchased for well over that less than a buck price. Grrrrrrr. angry.gif
I also got the 2 new ones by Camera Obscura (Lets Get out of This Country) and the Handsome Family.
The rest were used by Vic Chesnutt, a single by Grant McLennan, and Por Vida (Alejandro Escovedo).
So thats my story and I'm sticking to it.

Brook- The Camera Obscura is stellar, well worth buying. If you like Belle and Sebastian at all, this one is a must.

Ok CD addict Yojimbo, now's the time to tell us about your weekend of music.

Hmm lemme see if I can remember all of them.
Dizzy Gillespie-Sittin' In(24bit Verve remaster)
Wayne Shorter-The All Seeing Eye(24bit RVG remaster)
Sonic Youth-Sonic Youth
Zoot Sims and Bob Brookmeyer-Morning Fun
Dolo Coker-California Hard

And from this guy who was selling off 1200+ LP's and CD's to pay for his wedding(He was "paring" down from 10,000+ LP's):
Cowboy Junkies-200 More Miles(And no I didn't have it before)
Count Basie-Chairman of the Board
Count Basie and Duke Ellington-The First Time! The Count Meets the Duke!
Duke Ellington-Brown, Black and Beige
Gerry Mulligan-Live in Paris at the Salle Pleyel
Jimmy Smith-Hoochie Coochie Man
Charlie Parker-The Genius of Charlie Parker Vol 2

I think that's it, though I keep feeling like I"m missing one.
Then again, I always feel like I"m missing CD's, hehehe.

When/where do you want to get together Kent? It has to be someplace cheap. I"m reduced to eating tuna and Ramen this week due to the above purchases.

this is a damn fine, if not near brilliant record. the playing is just amazing, virtually perfect. from the first song, the alt-country rockish julie miller penned "the river's gonna run," (featuring buddy miller and emmylou harris), it just grabs you and does't let go. "the river's gonna run", the more traditional "river take me" and the truly amazing literal, hippy-trippy cover of "white bird" alone are worth the price of the cd (but the rest is very good too).

highly recommend this one.

It's been a few years since I've heard it but I remember there being some good stuff on that disc. smile.gif

I wish I could go back and see them in '97 or '98...the last time I saw them was 2002 and it was extremely underwhelming...I don't think they adapted to the bigger venues as well as Phish did in the mid-90's, but that's just me.
