May I reccomend at least picking up the original album of
Born To Run or the 2000 album
Live In New York City. (or alternately, the far more comprehensive 2-disc
The Essential Bruce Springsteen). The
Greatest Hits album was okay, but it's far too heavy on post-
River stuff (and includes nothing from his underrated first two LP's).
If you can swing it or find a used copy, I highly,
highly reccomend the 30th anniversary
Born To Run box set...the remastered CD is light years better than the regular version, and the live DVD included is absolutely essential viewing.
Okay...shameless plug over.

Yes, he's good, and he's even better live. I put a review of the new album from allmusic in the major looking forward CD thread. I don't know how'd you'd classify him...alt/country-roots-rock-tex/mex-singer songwriterish stuff..on first listen theres some real gems on here, will let you know more later after a few more listens.

Caiman.com works through both half.com and Amazon.com . They have good prices, and a great selection. But in my experience, it takes roughly about 3 weeks from time of purchase to get something from them. So if you want something fast, Caiman.com isn't the best place to go. The other vendors on half.com and Amazon.com have been amazingly fast at getting stuff to me and I've found lots of good deals. Ebay also has good deals sometimes too. The nice thing about half.com and Amazon.com is that the shipping is usually lower than on eBay.

Now I understand why Nick Drake is a legend. I've always loved Lucinda Williams' devastating cover of Which Will, and I know I've heard Pink Moon dozens of times on the radio without knowing who it was, but this album is amazing! It's rare for someone to keep me riveted out of the gate with just voice and guitar. Very sad he died so young.
The Knopfler/Emmylou album seems kinda bland by comparison, but I've only listened once so far.

Keith, do you listen to John Martyn? He did a great album called Solid Air in 1973

that was reported to be an attempt to reach out to Nick Drake.
You will recognize one of his most famous songs on the album, May You Never, because Eric Clapton covered on his album Backless if I remember correctly.
Drake and Martyn were friends and fellow singer/songwriters.

I've listened to this five times now, since I have to make a decision by tomorrow whether to shell out $100 to buy an orchestra seat from a friend to see them at Radio City next month. I think I'm gonna pass, cuz this album still sounds like alt-country elevator music to me. There's nothing really
wrong with it (I mean you've got Mark Knopfler playing guitar and Emmylou Harris singing), but most of the songs strike me as very unexciting.
Don't go by me though, I know a lot of people who really like it (which is why I bought it). It's also suffering by comparison to Pink Moon, which seems destined to find a spot among my 50 favorite albums of all time.

I agree with all you said above Keith. The Knopfler/Harris album is not bad at all and makes for a nice listen, and I would suggest people to give it a try, but you know what you're getting, and nothing really jumps out at me on it. It did make for nice background music at dinner the other night amongst the conversation. And whats up with the tickets for this show- up to 120 bucks apiece here. Geez, thats like 6 Neko Case concerts I could go to, or 6 OtR shows, with spending money left over.
Pink Moon is a classic. Everybody should own a Nick Drake album of some kind- so much heartache, so personal (maybe you feel it even more knowing his story), but that album is truly timeless. From 1973 also.
Top 50, oh yeah, definitely.
For those unfamiliar, try Way to Blue- kind of an overview/introduction to him. There is also a 4-CD box set called Fruit Tree which came out in 1991 and can be tough to find. It includes 3 albums and a cd of other stuff. But it'll cost ya.

i think it is a nice record and i enjoy it more with each listen but, i can see keith's point. i'm not in agreement with the "alt-country elevator music" sentiment and (to me) several songs really soar. i also really expected to hear emmy "step out" a little more, as i said earlier, it kind of feels like a knopfler album w/emmy as a "guest artist" rather than a collaborative project between the two of them (not that thats a bad thing, just not what i was expecting).
my expectations were incredibly high for this one and while i really like it, i expected more. but all said, i'd buy it again in a heartbeat (and i prob go see them if they were coming near here

I have mine organized artistically. that is to say, Over the Rhine is next to Cowboy Junkies and Hem, all on the same shelf as Patty Griffin and Sarah McLachlan and Sixpence and The Sundays, etc...
this actually makes finding a CD easier, without being all librarian about it. each stylistic section is relatively small in comparison to the whole, and when I'm in whatever mood, I go to that section and it's all there. and similar bands are next to each other, in a sort of progression on down the row. "if you feel like listening to this, you might want to listen to this one too"
you should try it sometime. re-organizing one's music collection is a great way to become more familiar with all the wonders hidden there. it's like new sexual positions, but with music. "oh wow, that's a fun way to look at it"
I still like to keep my early years organized autobiographically (I've been doing this long before Nick Hornby even thought about writing that classic book). something about that pre-OCD music that still holds prominance in my collection. it's great to be able to relive my high school years by simply browsing along one of my CD shelves.

Based on Kent's empty wallet and my empty pockets and end of the pay period ramen noodles w/tuna fish, I'd say neither of us is winning as well financially. However, I think both of us are winning musically, though I haven't seen all of Kent's purchases, so I don't know if he's a closet fan or Milli Vanilli, Poison, or some other wretched band/artist. My bet is not based on his listings to date.
It would be difficult to determine number wise by total # since his Cheeseheadedness has a few years on me. No offense Kent, just stating the facts. However, it might be fair to calculate how many CD's within a specific time period we have purchased. I could do that since I make a new CD catalog spreadsheet about every two weeks or so and have done so for about 2.5 years now.
As far as filing alphabetically vs. relationship/musically wise. Yeah I tried the whole this band goes with that band/artist thing. But I don't have a 3-D shelving system nor a gigantic wall shelving system. There are so many people that I associate with Miles Davis or Art Blakey or John Coltrane alone that its almost impossible to get any real good system going. I'd rather spend the time listening to music rather than trying to complicate things with some OCD filing system. But to each their own.

I'm reorganizing my records tonight. It's something I do in times of emotional distress. When Laura was here I had them in alphabetical order, before that, chronologically. Tonight, though, I'm trying to put them in the order in which I bought them. That way I can write my own autobiography without picking up a pen. Pull them all off the shelves, look for Revolver and go from there. I'll be able to see how I got from Deep Purple to The Soft Boys in twenty-five moves. What I really like about my new system is that it makes me more complicated than I am. To find anything you have to be me, or at the very least a doctor in Rob-ology. If you wanna find Landslide by Fleetwood Mac you have to know that I bought it for someone in the fall of 1983 and then didn't give it to them for personal reasons. But you don't know any of that, do you? You would have to ask me to... <phone rings>
High Fidelity
I had mine in autobiographical order, but then I lost my job so now I have then in color order. Yeah, like all the blue ones are together and then all the red ones. Tomorrow I'm thinking about putting them in reverse pig-latin order...

you're supposed to listen to music
while you're creating the complicated OCD filing system. It's a great excuse to just spend hours and hours staring at your music collection while listening to anything that pops it's head out of whatever crack it may have fallen into.
...but you know what would be cool? if you could like take over some school gymnasium and make one of those pictures that is comprised of little unrelated pictures... like arranging all the CDs in the right sort of combination, based on shading and color and whatnot, and it makes a big gymnasium-sized picture of Dr. Phil. And then you'd be all like " eww, that was stupid. why did I make a picture of Dr. Phil?" and then you'd spend a whole other day trying to come up with something better, trying to figure out how to make it work. and then when you're done it really just looks like a bunch of CDs all over a gymnasium floor. and you might think you'd be depressed that you couldn't make a cool picture out of your CD's, but come on, how cool would it be to just cover the floor of a school gymnasium with all your CDs? and then you could go up into the balcony and see all your CDs layed out like that from way up high... that would be cool...
