Assuming 40 CDs of James Joyce and the advance copy of Neko's new album someone was nice enough to send me don't count, the latest addition to my collection would be Tina Dico's In The Red.

oh my god, I almost just puked up my midnight snack at the thought of that...
coming right after that mouth-watering Dylan bit especially! (why haven't I bought that CD yet? I'm stupid? I'm an idiot? I'm retarted? all of the above? I like starbucks too, despite their corporate takeover of the world. great mochas)

*Tossing Brookd a barf-bag*

: )

I promise not ever to ask you to listen to Barry with us, 'kay??!

don't get me wrong, I have a Barry Mannilow greatest hits CD hidden away so no one will ever know just like anyone. it's the 50's songs part that even now gets me green around the gills. I generally don't like 50's music (unless it's Jazz or Classical), but to have Barry Mannilow singing 50's songs may quite possibly qualify as the most repulsive idea known to mankind. Tell me there's an Elvis tune on there, and my revulsion shall be complete... (though a duet with Celine Dion might do it too)

*did you want this bag back? I cleaned it off as best I could, but there was a lot...
kent
well got a few more things yesterday (I guess more than a few)

got Brandi Carlile ' Live From Neumo's'
and Janelle's Q1 Mix- Under the Covers both in the mail

Also at the ever beckening stores-
Vic Chesnutt-Silver Lake ( I really liked his stuff at the Undertow Orchestra concert- definite freak-folk)
Will Johnson- Survey/Voyage 2004-2005 (of Centro-Matic, recorded in his kitchen)
Sia- Colour The Small One (I figured if I got Tina Dico, I'd better get this)
Cowboy Junkies- Waltz Across America- (Now my CJ collection is complete)
Liz Durrett- The Mezzanine (if you like Jesse Sykes, Beth Orton, she's along those lines somewhat)
Aimee Mann- Whatever (early stuff, couldn't pass up the 3.95 tag)
Rocky Volanato- Markers (Damien Jurado-ish music) and
Beth Orton- She Cries Your Name- (an EP from the Trailer Park era) it was a buck for it

now I need to add onto the house

Uhm ... nah (hehe!).

: )

I haven't heard Barry's renditions yet, so I can't weigh-in on how he sounds. I do like (some) '50s music, though, so ... we'll see! (No Elvis tunes that I recall ... and no Celine, either!)

Well unfortunately I can't keep up with Kent but I did manage to snag these two from the used bins:

Herbie Hancock-Speak Like a Child(RVG remaster)
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers-Southern Accents

Beth Orton - Comfort of Strangers

Sia- Colour The Small One (I figured if I got Tina Dico, I'd better get this)

Let me know your take on this one, Kent. I love her with Zero7, but her solo stuff (i've only heard it via her 2 KCRW appearances) wasn't strong enough to over-shadow what was [to me] pretty annoying between song chit chat banter. If the music really knocked me on my ass, that wouldn't matter, just to be clear. So, yeah, keep me posted, homey. smile.gif

Excellent, and they'll be at SXSW with OTR! Check 'em out if you can.

On the Sia album Michelle, there are some gems that I really like and there is some average stuff too.
Of course Breathe is great, and I really like this song called Moon also. The first 3-4 cuts stand out the most, along with Moon. Even has a Jem/Dido feel to it sometimes. All in all I like it, but need to listen to it more yet.
For me it might take 3-4 listens to really get into the album, but the tracks I mentioned did catch my attention right away.
Just wondering what you think of the Beth Orton also, its a little rawer than anything shes done before, no electronics this time, and pretty simple. I like that feel to the music sometimes, and I really like this album right now, I'm giving it heavy airplay. Can't wait to see her 4/1.

Lastly. not to hj this thread I did get the new Trespassers William album on Tuesday- 'having'.
Will post my thoughts on it in the TW thread later.

In my vain attempt to keep up with Cheesehead Kent™ I found in the used bins:
Lee Morgan-Indeed! [Japanese remaster ](I've been looking for this for 1.5 frickin years, YEAH!!!!)

well, here we are again- this is getting way out of control....
but if they'd stop all these new releases, maybe I could catch up.

Anyhoo, a few new releases I got this weekend included
Neko Case- Fox Confessor Brings the Flood- (a great new album)
Mogwai- The Beast (a definite sonic adventure- great stuff)

Then the used bins-
Tim Easton- The Truth About Us
Rosie Thomas- In Between (a 5 song EP from '01 from a very underrated artist)
Richard Buckner-Bloomed (his first album)
Red House Painters (just missing one of theirs now)
and the steal of the weekend
Slowdive- Soulvaki- (the import version that included the Blue Day EP) Slowdive morphed into Mojave 3 and were a shoegazing band in the early 90's. This import version is almost impossible to find for any reasonable amount- it was 8.95, a major bargain for me.

At least I have enough left for beer and cheese curds.

well i havent posted new purchases in a while so here goes-
up to saturday-
Steve Reynolds-Exile (one of the tunes on my quarterly mix is here)
Tres Chicas- Bloom, Red & The Ordinary Girl
Sarah Harmer- You Were Here (another from this made my mix)
Erik Brandt-Green Eyed Alone- local Mpls artist- has some Jayhawks on it, and sounds like Jayhawks

Todays finds-
Sera Cahoone- the former drummer from Carissa's Weird- this one I really like
Essex Green-Cannibal Sea- this is the best they've done yet
plus these used and all cheaper than 5 bucks each-
Two Gallants-what the toll tells
SRC- a late 60'-early 70's Detroit prog rock band that I've been looking for since then- the CD was a buck and they do a killer version of Hall of the Mountain King/Bolero- somehow it doesn't sound like it did back then
Jim White- No Such Place
Shelly Short-Captain Wildhorse (Rides the Heart of Tomorrow)- This ones getting good airplay up here, and
Ghost Buffalo, Luke Doucet and a Lambchop EP w/ Hands off Cuba.
And for 5.00 a boxed set of 6CD's called CMJ 500, which basically chonicles modern rock from about 1993-1997. Incredible- you name it its on there. It has about 120 songs on it. For 5 bucks!

Don't be surprised if some of these end up on my next mix. Well, gotta get to listening.

Yeah, I almost picked up used copies of Trey Anastasio's "Shine" and Sarah McLachlan's "Bloom," before I remembered that they're both evil discs. I heard they were going to release new versions without the bullshit protection, is this actually happening? Eventually I'd like to own both of those albums to replace the mp3's I downloaded with a decided smirk. Silly silly record companies. wink.gif

The other night I walked into everyday music, and walked out with:
Blonde Redhead - The secret Society of Butterflies
Quasi - When the going gets dark
Allison Kraus and Union Station - Lonely Runs both ways (for a buck!!!)

My entire total was 20.94. More than I should spend, but still - quite a bargin.

I did enough damage to my bank account when I had to drive 32.6 miles (one-way) to get to one of SecondSpin's stores. Now that I've finally gotten over my phobia about buying used CDs online and embraced SecondSpin.com, I'm really starting to hurt myself. Here's today's order, which is, if I'm not mistaken, the 5th order I've placed with them over the past month:

Beth Orton - Comfort of Strangers
Pink Martini - Hang On Little Tomato
Dave Alvin - Romeo's Escape
Gypsy Soul - Journey
Les Negresses Vertes - Trabendo

I haven't visited this thread in a while, but, yes, Sony is re-issuing these titles, supposedly without the copy protection. The packaging is different, but I haven't stuck any of them into computers. I had to round up all the copies of the 7 or so titles the library owned to exchange them for the new editions, so I have seen them. The old editions have the software noted on the backs, the new ones don't.

Ohh, is that the new Calexico? If so, you'll have to give us a synopsis.

How was Train? I haven't seen them since '99 at Mississippi Nights in St. Louis. It was one of my all time favorite shows, but they've tried to become rock stars since then... I assume the Brandi Carlile was awesome?
