today I bought "Ghost Reveries" by Opeth. It's kind of metal/"stoner rock" and i like it alot.
I plan on buying "Lochloosa" by Mofro when I get a chance, and I think a few of you might want to check them out. They're a pretty mellow southern rock band.

I just picked up a CD by the Clumsy Lovers called Smart Kid.
Wow, what a great find! I heard a song by them on XM so I thought I'd check them out. They're hard to describe. I hear some bluegrass. Lots of banjo, mandolin, guitar, but they're not bluegrass. I hear some folk; upbeat folk. iTunes classified them as rock when I loaded them into my library (?). Anyway they are upbeat and fun. They will make you want to dance or at least tap your foot.
They're from Canada and they have several other CD's out. I might have to check them out too.

Bleach and

Nevermind...the overkill of that one is still wearing off.
Did you get the regular Fillmore East or the deluxe edition? There's been a few different permutations of it over the years, but the two-disc one is killer...they finally restored the entire show to it's correct running order (including the stuff they used on
Eat A Peach). Well worth the price of admission.

Jessyka was kind enough to sneak one other disc in there, for me: Nada Surf's
Let Go.
My list of things I shouldn't have blown money on include the following:
Ben Folds'
Speed Graphic e.p. - bitching cover of "In Between Days" by the Cure and a ton of other goodies.
Oneida's
The Wedding - a little strange, still letting this one soak in. Not quite what I expected, but good in that psychadelic garage band kind of way.
Margot and the Nuclear So So's
The Dust of Retreat - a local band from Indy writes the best recorded you haven't heard in a long, long time. And I am not just saying that. This is going on an Orchard mix sometime or another...
Beck's
Sea Change - had heard a lot of it, liked it even though I tend to not like Beck, so I thought I'd pick it up.
Sweet... 'cept now I can't buy another cd for like three months. I've reached my quota for a while...

I thought it sounded alright enough when it was going down, but I never "got" it. I completely understand what you're saying and I think it applies to me a bit. I'm on a mission now to uncover all kinds of the stuff. Interesting how checking out one band produces all kinds of leads on other bands (post and pre the original band) like The Melvins, Mudhoney, Scream, The Vaselines, The Germs, etc.

I started with the Unplugged disc (oddly enough), the Sliver set and then got all the studio CDs. I would have to say that (after listening to them all a few times) IU is my fav so far followed closely by Nevermind and Bleach (tie).

I've got a few pre-Fillmore East bootlegs and they're smokin'. Haven't heard the stuff they've officially released, but I'm sure I'll get around to it eventually.
I'm also a fan of the two mid-90's live albums they put out ("An Evening With..." and "2nd Set"). The downside is that they're the worst kind of live album...chopped together pieces from various shows with no real sense of cohesion or track order, but the performances themselves are great. Dickey Betts and Warren Haynes were an amazing guitar team...I still can't believe they're continuing without Dickey, what a crock.

Nice Bill... I believe this would qualify as getting "back into." The soundtrack of my teen years most definitely includes the ABB. I had some vinyl of them, but I had a LOT of vinyl that is not around anymore (shame). Thanks for the suggestion.

Incidentally, you can get those two ABB 90's live albums I mentioned on half.com for under $3 each. Worth it for the acoustic tracks alone..."An Evening With" features a breathtaking acoustic version of "Melissa" and "2nd Set" has a really cool acoustic take on "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed."
Both those albums are also a good way to skim over the high points of their 90's studio output...the better tracks from those albums are on there: "End Of The Line," "Nobody Knows," "Sailin' Cross The Devils Sea"...good stuff.

well, I fought the reality of grunge tooth and nail (as Dokken would say), and so was a fair bit biased against it when it was happening. I'm an 80's pop metal head myself (or was back then). grunge was not my friend.
oddly enough, before I realized it was killing 80's metal, I actually loved Smells Like Teen Spirit, and got into that CD before it got the massive radio saturation it did. What I mean to say is that I was into Nirvana's Nevermind before it was cool! (which, as it turns out, was all of a few days after it's release)
WalrusOct9

It's really a shame that 80's rock and grunge couldn't find a way to co-exist peacefully. Especially after grunge and other trends forced some 80's bands to re-examine their craft and make really great 90's albums that no one heard (Extreme's "III Sides To Every Story," Def Leppard's "Slang," INXS' "Welcome To Wherever You Are"). Although I suppose a Nirvana fan listening to Poison was the same as a punk kid going to see Yes in the 70's.
Brookd
Feb 1 2006, 05:34 AM
yeah, those 2 styles were about as antithetical as they get. one was about partying and forgetting about life's cares, and the other was about expressing suicidal depression over life's cares. and really, could any grunge rocker get away with wearing shiny spandex and pretty make-up? could eddie vedder be eddie vedder if he were to blow a kiss to the camera during a photo shoot?
I don't know that I agree with you on the "great 90's albums". Extreme III was good, yes, but then they weren't really trying to change for the times as far as I can tell. but Slang? really?? I thought one of the worst most embarracing things about the 90's was watching 80's metal bands try to incorporate grunge reality into their look or sound. all the haircuts... all the "dutch boy" shoulder length cuts... oh the horror. all that "updated sound" bullshit. I hated most of the albums put out by 80's metal bands in the 90's. they didn't know who the hell they were or what they were good at... didn't know they couldnt' just wear grunge like another fashion trait. it just didn't work that way... betrayed a fundamental misunderstanding of what grunge was all about to think of it in terms of fashion...
what the hell am I rattling on about? sorry...

My slightly tragic take on the grunge era is that I was totally aware of the complete change in the way everything sounded when Nevermind came out, I was in exactly the right age to get that "This is so REAL, Music is suddenly so IMPORTANT" feeling, but I was too f-ing religous at the time to actually let myself get into it. I remember me really wanting to get Nevermind, Ten and all those others, but I sort of felt I wasn't supposed to. It's the one thing about my faith that really bothers me.
A few years later I did get "vs.", and now I have most of the major grunge albums. It still bothers me, though, that I was around for one of the great moments in the history of pop music, and was held back by idiotic ideals of what a christian should listen too..
(Mind you, I never sank so low as to get the DC Talk album a few years later. Even then I felt that would have been to betray my own teenage years.)

Cowboy Junkies - Live!
I didn't know this disc existed. It's not listed on the Cowboy Junkies website, nor AllMusic.com. John Prine is actually performing on the live version of If You Were The Woman And I Was The Man. It was recorded at Berekely Community Theatre on May 15, 1992. It's a BMG disc, so that rules out a boot. Here's the song listing:
This Street, That Man, This Life,3:32
If You Were The Woman And I Was The Man (featuring John Prine),4:36
Hot Burrrito No. 1,4:17
Sweet Jane,6:02
Keith or anyone else know anything about this recording? It's the most upbeat recording I've heard from CJ and I have quite a bit of their stuff, although I've never seen them in concert... Even Sweet Jane is kind of jazzy/country-ish and much more upbeat than the studio recording on Trinity Sessions. It almost reminds me of the Marshall Tucker Band, which is kind of funny when you consider it's a Lou Reed song...

It's on RCA/BMG and includes 2 performances from that date at Berkeley, including the If You Were... and its with John Prine but timed at 3:58 and also has Pale Sun on it from that date and venue. The discs version of Sweet Jane is from Toronto December 1993 and is 3:50 in length. The other 2 are not on the disc at all.
