Sometimes I buy someone's CD because I want to encourage the band to keep doing music. Sometimes I buy a CD because I like the cover, after all I come from LP days... Sometimes I buy a CD because someone says they like the music and I wonder what they like. Most of the time I buy a CD because someone has described the music to be like other music that I like.

However, there are times that I don't buy CD's even if the music is good. My understanding it that Tool has some excellent music, but their lyrics tend to anti-Chrisitian/God. I don't want to encourage that so I don't buy their CDs. Everytime you spend a dollar on a CD you are in effect voting for what continues to be produced.

Sometimes I buy music and tell others about it. In this case, I am warning Christians that they may not dig this on the inside of Ray LaMontagne's CD named Trouble:

"And you, liar, teller of tall
tales: you trample
all the Lord's
commandments
underfoot, you murder, steal,
commit adultery, and afterward break
into tears, beat your breast,
take down your guitar and
turn the sin into
a song. Shrewd devil, you know
very well that God pardons singers no
matter what they do,
because he can simply
die for a song..."

from The Last Temptation Of Christ, by Nikos Kaztantzakis

The other thing that Christians might not dig is the art work on the cover of this CD. A devil holding a thorn sprig held high as if celebrating dancing with a blind folded lady with what appears to be a had cut off holding onto her necklace. And what's the stuff down below the devil's tail?

However, like I said before, the music is good. But, from a Christain point of view, potential buyers may want to do more research before they purchase...

And please, do not acuse me of pushing Christian only artists. I am merely warning Christians to be aware...

thasallimsayin...

Skoegahom...

BTW, if you like Ray LaMontagne, you probably would like Brian Vander Ark's Ressurection CD. He was the lead singer of the VervePipe.

Brian Vander Ark

And Dizz Knee Land would be good Christian music? blink.gif

I haven't noticed anything in Ray Montagne's lyrics to make me think he's anti-Christian. And personally, I can relate to being saved by a woman.

Tool is one of the most intelligent metal bands around... they write beautiful music. While I don't argue the fact that they are often anti-christian (moreso than anti-god), I wouldn't expect anything less from a primarily atheistic "think for yourself, question authority" mantra'd metal band. They are highly anti-institution. I applaud them for their stance on not buying what the religious right is selling and enabling others to begin questioning. Many of their fans are jocks anyway (which is quite ironic); so, hell, most of them probably don't delve too deep into the lyrics anyway. As for an good example of great poetic, non-antichristian lyrics from Tool... it's a song about trying to grow from differences...

..........Tool "Schism" from Lateralus (©2001)

........."I know the pieces fit, because I watched them fall away
..........Mildewed and smoldering. Fundamental differing.
..........Pure intention juxtaposed will set two lovers souls in motion
..........Disintegrating as it goes testing our communication
..........The light that fueled our fire then has burned a hole between us so
..........We cannot see to reach an end crippling our communication.

..........I know the pieces fit, because I watched them tumble down
..........No fault, none to blame it doesn't mean I don't desire to
..........Point the finger, blame the other, watch the temple topple over.
..........To bring the pieces back together, rediscover communication

..........The poetry that comes from the squaring off between,
..........And the circling is worth it.
..........Finding beauty in the dissonance.

..........There was a time that the pieces fit, but I watched them fall away.
..........Mildewed and smoldering, strangled by our coveting
..........I've done the math enough to know the dangers of our second guessing
..........Doomed to crumble unless we grow, and strengthen our communication.

..........Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any
..........Sense of compassion
..........Between supposed brothers
..........Between supposed lovers
."

I just think negating something simply because you don't agree with it or subscribe to its beliefs is a good way at being narrow-minded. As an agnostic, I still listen to christian music. It's not like "non-christian music" is gonna make you wanna go have sex and stab people with sharp knives, and "christian music" is gonna make you wanna go pray and have potlucks. I draw no lines. My upcoming Mix Club CD has some christian artists on it, but it also has Tool... rolleyes.gif

can we end this hijack and let this thread go back to it's intent and not be another tiring, unending christian debate. can't there be one thread that is safe from that conversation and that subject? must it constantly be inflicted on us everywhere we turn? geez...

i simply stated that i loved the record, i recommend the record, the music is excellent (imho). i really never considered critiquing the cover art and liner notes also...

this is just *messed* unsure.gif up. imho, the record is excellent, end of story. lets move on...

so, it wasn't my purchase, someone got it for me as a gift. but i love it SO MUCH i'm pimping it as "the lastest cd i got" and calling it good.

Dane Cook - Retaliation

it's a 2 cd comedy package that comes with a DVD of some comedy central animated skits and a couple other footage stuff. i had never heard of this dude, and he has been cracking my shiznit up since i "got" the cd(s). if you like stand up stuff check the homey out.

George Jones, "Hits I Missed ...and One I Didn't"

a cover cd with a twist. they're all songs that were pitched to George at one time, for whatever reason he passed them up, and they later became hits by other artists. what's the 'and one i didn't' track you ask ? a re-recording for the 25th anniversary of "He Stopped Loving Her Today." a great cd for any classic country fan.

Thanks to the discussion of him in the Orchard smile.gif :

Ray LaMontagne - Trouble

I love it. Totally love it. Songs 2 & 6 are my favorite, atm.

Shelter & Forever My Friend
Toga080
I just saw him last Saturday in Columbus. I was front row center. He is great live, although I do believe that he is just a bit overrated. I am fearful that he will tend to blend in with the ultra boring crowd (Jack Johnson, John Mayer, Jamie Cullum, David Gray, Ben Harper, etc..... you get my drift) as he grows in popularity, rather than staying true to his sound. I think Jolene is probably my fav on the CD.

nice record. took a few listens to get into, but i'm really diggin' it now.

Garrison Starr - Airstreams & Satellites
Jake Armerding

I bought both after seeing each live. Both live shows are recommended, but I haven't listened to either CD yet all the way through.

I *especially* suggest seeing Garrison Starr live with Glen Phillips and Dan Wilson on their tour if you have any chance. They are absolutely hilarious together. It's definitely the most fun I've ever had at a concert.

Then, I bought these:

Sara Groves - Add to the Beauty
Denison Witmer - Are You a Dreamer?

Groves' is a little disappointing on the first two listens; Witmers is really nice. Sufjan-esque sleepy acoustic stuff. Hearing Karen Peris, Sufjan Stevens, Katrina Kerns, and Shara Worden on backup vocals at the same time... it's like being among family.

I've always been more of a Ferrar than a Tweedy fan, but I gotta say the preview tracks I've heard here totally kick ass and make that Son Volt concert at the 9:30 Club sound downright sedate by comparison.

Can't wait to hear the rest of it!

I bought the last Rosie Thomas album 'If songs could be held' and I love it. It's so intimate en beautiful! Anyone should listen to it! smile.gif

"Classical Masters Beethoven" - a terrible compilation of dry renditions that take all the fun out of Beethoven. I don't think that the people who made it knew the basics of CD mastering, either. Eww.

Prairie Wind - Neil Young

I've never been a big fan of Neil, but this one seemed like a good choice. I'll let you know. I like "This Old Guitar" right off the bat (Emmylou Harris on backing vocals!)
WalrusOct9
I really like Neil's new one. smile.gif And really, I've listened to every record he's put out since Harvest Moon, and other than the Pearl Jam involvement on Mirror Ball, this is the first one I've been really impressed with in the last 12-13 years. After things like Broken Arrow and Are You Passionate I'm not sure anyone will really give it a chance, but I definitely reccomend giving it a listen. smile.gif
