4. the who - quadrophenia (in really good condition in a plastic sheath, no less)

all for $13 at a local comic book store. i'm stoked.

now if i can just get a working record player...
WalrusOct9
Oh man...Quadrophenia is one of my favorite albums of all time. I wish I could hear what it sounds like on really nice vinyl.
Daneel
well, as my record player isn't working. i've haven't heard it yet. which is really irritating because everyone keeps telling me it's a really good album.
WalrusOct9
Go get that thing fixed!

You're in for a real treat, I promise...it's not their most famous album, but to me it's the Who's finest hour.
Daneel
i'll try and get the bloody thing working then.

i got the jem cd! and i love it. well, most of it. sometimes she sounds like dido, and it makes me sad. there don't need to be two didos...

That's pretty much what I've heard from everybody: That Jem would be like Dido if Dido weren't so disappointing. In fact, I just got 32 emails from my friend Jen all telling me she just got the Jem CD. So, either she was really excited about it, or she had some kind of glitch in her computer.

Hey, Rilo Kiley person... Have you heard about the new CD they have coming out? It's going to be called More Adventurous and I think it's coming out in July.

last couple discs bought:

1. otr's films, for a friend, discounted to $3.49 new at a store closing sale. i didnt know there was a store in town that sold otr. i said this to the guy at the counter. he said, "good album, but its way better on vinyl." why do stores like this close before i realize their value?
2. ryan adams' gold, same place, similar price. was promptly loaned to a friend who was only supposed to listen to it once that day while we were driving. havent gotten it back since. grrr....

That used Cd store had Strange Little Girls and From the Choirgirl Hotel too. Did I mention it's 2 blocks from here?

Oi x 2.

Michelle, you need to get Choirgirl if you haven't yet. It's my favorite Tori to date.
I didn't care much for "Strange Little Girls," though.

The Elected -- "Me First"

How is this?
I love Rilo Kiley, but am nervous because Blake's voice kind of irritates me.

Sorry, I haven't been in this thread for a while & missed the question. I like it, but if the voice annoys you, you might want to avoid it. I read a review somewhere, downloaded a few songs to see if I liked them, then bought the album.

Newest new purchase: Chitlin Fooks. From the All Music Guide: A mystifyingly named duo of Carol Van Dyk of the Dutch alternative pop group Bettie Serveert and Pascal Deweze of the Belgian pop group Sukilove, Chitlin' Fooks is a surprisingly strong take on American country rock of the Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris style that sounds nothing at all like either member's previous work.

I just bought The Offspring's Pretty Fly (For a White Guy) and the soundtrack to Romeo and Juliet off of Ebay for .15 pounds a piece. Can you believe that?

What do you think of him? I saw him open for Freedy Johnston last year and he *blew* him away! I have this CD on my Ipod and whenever it comes up I realize how good Eric Hutchison is!

Bowie: Station to station - fantastic
Bowie: Ziggy stardust, ok, but not something I'm likely to lsten muh to.
Kate Bush: Hound of Love, haven't had enogh time yet. FUll of extras I'm not too happy about. I prefer when they just re-release the original album..

Jolie Holland : Escondida

What an awesome surprise...way better than i was even expecting
GoodDog
I'm not sure why I purchased this because I have all of the studio c.d.'s the songs originally were on. I just saw it staring me down at Borders saying, "buy me, buy me!" (And it was on sale!)

Jackson Browne - The Very Best Of (2 c.d. set)

Jackson has always been a favorite of mine. Kind of a male equivalent of Karin's confessional writing. Good, good stuff.

I just picked this one up, too and I love it. Incredible stuff.

Other than that, most recent purchase was a Ben Harper mini-box set. Three of his studio releases and I am in love. I haven't been hit this hard since kickball in the third grade.

all recommended.

Also, I've ordered these two, but they haven't arrived yet:

Last time I made a purchase at my local CD store, I picked up Rachel's Handwriting EP and Pedro the Lion's Achilles Heel. Both are excellent.

A couple days ago, I ordered Dreaming in Stereo online from the Chris McCarty Band, so I'm hoping that arrives this week. Not much new music, but it's their first really well-produced album, so I have to show my love. smile.gif

Randy Newman - Sail Away (relaxing and simple=beautiful songs)
RZA - as Bobby Digital in Stereo (repetative and simple=boring and stupid)

Since RZA was heavily involved in the music on Kill Bill, I thought this was goind to be a quality, creative and original album, instead it was boring and stupid.
I may take it back since I bought it used.

Jennifer Knapp's The Way I Am. I'd bought it once before, then gave it away to a friend. I felt sort of lost without it, but the gaping knawing void in my collection has now been refilled.

We likeses the Knapp.

are there any other J-Knapp CDs that come close to that one? I generally don't do much CCM shopping, but for some reason I picked that one up and I think it's just incredible. I'm afraid to read the lyrics for fear they might ruin the illusion. her interviews have been less-than-impressive to me (too CCM / evangelical like). but the songs on The Way I Am are fantastic. for some reason, prior to hearing this CD, I've always written her off as a typical Jewel wanna-be (the "Christian Jewel"). care to set me straight? or is that CD an exception to her usual fare?
WalrusOct9
New audio bootlegs I'm listening to for the first time:

Billy Joel Retold Volumes 1-3...three discs of beautious studio outtakes and demos, and a few unreleased songs. Kind of rediscovering him with this, I was always a big fan, but since he hadn't put out anything new in over 10 years, I kinda moved on to other things (and cause Ben Folds kinda turned me off to the "piano rock" thing for awhile). But this stuff is really good. Anyone who hasn't heard it should check out Cold Spring Harbor, there's a ton of great songs on that record that most people have never heard.
liberation party
Brook, all three of Jennifer Knapp's Gotee CDs have a different feel to them, so you won't necessarily like the others. Kansas (my personal favorite) featured her most confessional songwriting and basic production. Lay it Down drew heavily on the Psalms for lyrics, and had the same producer as Kansas trying to put out a rock record. The results are patchy. The Way I Am was a tad on the overdone side, in my opinion, but I appreciate what McAnamy did to finally flesh out her songs as Stuart never did. The lyrics are original again, the songs grabbed me again, and I had the chords to half the album figured out before it was even released. For me, that is a sign of true love. smile.gif If you're going to purchase a second Knapp CD, I'd recommend Kansas for the songwriting alone.

the new patty griffin....gut-wrenchingly beautiful!
"how the sky turns to fire

and even i'm getting tired
of useless desires"

the new sloan....really disappointing. boring, even. thought i'd found a new
band i'd been missing out on (based on one song i heard and liked, and lots
of good recommendations from various sources). oh well.

the new my morning jacket acoustic ep. if you liked the rest of their stuff,
this is just more of the same, live. very good.

the new del mcCoury, one of my fave bluegrass pickers. love that rounder
records!

out of the used bin: the replacements, "stink," 8 tracks of the original mixes
from the 1982 mini-lp. "f*#! school" "god d*#@ job" and "dope smokin
moron" tongue.gif just saw good old paul play a solo set last month. sat in rapt
awe of his talent, his f*#@-up-ness and his shoes. ahh, bittersweet
fondness.

I broke my "no CD buying" pledge and got Sarah McLachlan's "Live Acoustic" EP off of ebay. It's supposedly a limited edition, so I forced myself to buy it. Yay for more Sarah CD's.
