While not a new one, it is new to me. I fell in love with the sound of it when I heard it on NPR last fall. Good folk sound if you enjoy folk music.

The Joshua Tree (Remastered / Expanded) (Super Deluxe Edition) (2CD/DVD) - U2 ... my wife got this for me for valentine's day! wonderful remastering on this, the dvd is excellent, and the book of lyrics & comments from all parties involved is nicely done. this is my favorite album ever. what a great gift!

yeah, but just wait 'til they come out w/the newest, latest, greatest super-duper deluxe edition.
WalrusOct9
At least it was 20 years and not 6 months after the first edition. wink.gif

I thought the price was a bit silly but it was a really nicely put together package, and the remastering was very, very well done. Hopefully they'll do the same for their other 80's albums...those early albums could really use an upgrade.

I have been so into Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings lately ever since they came into town and sold out (an amazing feat for Virginia!!!) I've been collecting their 7 Inch Singles... wow there is some amazing stuff out there.. from This Land, Damn Its Hot, You Better Think Twice..... and not to mention their latest 100 Days 100 Nights is INCREDIBLE!!! I look forward to more from this group.. they've yet to disappoint me

These remastered versions of three Grateful Dead classics have been around for a while, but at < $11 each from Amazon (including bonus tracks) I thought it was time:

Listened to Live Dead (still my favorite live album of all time) this morning and it sounds fantastic! Huge improvement in clarity and stereo image over the original release. Looking forward to hearing the studio albums.

Several people I know have been gushing unabashedly over Loreena McKennitt for some time, so I finally bought her live album + DVD. Plan to watch it this weekend.

went to nashville, over the weekend for our daughter's ice skating competition, and got the following:

washington square serenade - Steve Earle ... i don't get the backlash to this cd. i think it's pretty innovative. must be all the good ole' boys that keep wearing out copperhead road.

Lovers Prayers - Ida ... only listened to this once, so far. pretty stuff.

Townes Van Zandt (1969) ... first Townes album i've picked up, although i've heard lots of his songs done by other folks. stellar!

chocolate supa highway - Spearhead ... completed my collection finding this one. jammin' with stephen marley, too!

and if you like that one by Ida Scott, their last 2-2001s The Braille Night and 2005s Heart Like a River are very similar.
The earlier works are much more sadcore/very lo-fi almost in an early Low way, which is not a bad thing at all.

Got these today-

Gary Louris- Vagabonds

The Mountain Goats- Heretic Pride

Almost got this, but am waiting until I hear about it from Bill and/or Keith, on what they think of it.
I was disappointed with her last one, but like some of her earlier stuff,
and especially a 2004 show Keith sent me.

damn. i was hoping to get a clue from you.

i love everything that she had done up until "gettin' somewhere," especially "show" (even w/kid rock), "miss fortune" ("steal the sun" wow!) & "the duel" (i ain't givin' up, the duel & once upon a time, incredible vocals/songs and what a band she had on that pre-steve album and tour). but i really thought "gettin' somewhere" (post steve) was pretty horrible.

i'm hopin' the last one was just a transition and that "sad" allison wasn't better than "happy" allison, because she has one of the top (imho) three or four voices in the business.

Jose Gonzalez

Great acoustical guitarist and vocalist, he's on tour now with Mia Doi Todd opening for him. He's about to begin a US tour with 27 dates in the USA in March 2008! Check out the link for dates. I am hugely disappointed that I have to work the Saturday night he'll be in Philadelphia.

Stop the Bus!

Ummm, you only got the second one...now you must go back and get Nothin' But the Water...

And then Susan Tedeschi's first two, Just Won't Burn & Better Days, that is if you don't already have them!

And then, we'll start talking about Bonnie Raitt.

BTW, has anyone picked up the solo Grace Potter yet? I haven't gotten around tuit yet. Just curious if it is more of the same?
WalrusOct9
Is it just me or is everyone doing cover albums these days? I swear half the bands in my collection have put one out in the last couple years.

I mean, there's nothing inherently wrong with the idea, it just seems like everyone suddenly discovered David Bowie's Pin-Ups and decided to do their own right around the same time.

Cowboy Junkies- Trinity Revisited
finally released in the US
WalrusOct9
I've kind of given up on CD's, since anything I buy has a good chance of being re-released 6 months later, but I did finally get a preamp for my turntable and have been on a vinyl kick with the small amounts of money I do have. So, for a grand total of $18, I got...

Patti Scialfa - Play It As It Lays
Michelle Shocked...umm...the famous one with the cheesy title. (Bill?)
Jethro Tull - War Child
Nektar - A Tab In The Ocean
Camel - A Live Record
The Police - Outlandos D'Amour
McLaughlin/DiMeola/DeLucia -Friday Night In San Francisco (wankiest guitar album ever?)

I was kinda surprised to find Camel and Nektar albums so cheap, they're pretty obscure 70's prog bands. I'm especially looking forward to the Camel one. Patti's album sounds all warm and fuzzy on vinyl with the big geeky headphones. A shame she'll never really get the credit she deserves as an artist, but I like her stuff.

I recently discovered and am addicted to "Duffy" she has an amazing throwback sound and is often compared to Dusty Springfield the girls is simply amazing. I have her two "EPs" I am Duffy and Rockferry-7" EP ... well worth it!!

I agree. She's a great artist in her own right, got a great voice and unique style. I haven't purchased anything of hers because every time I've looked in the CD shops, I can't find any of her CD's. However, your posting here just gave me a pleasant reminder, and I think I'll try looking again since it's been awhile.

I got 23rd Strett Lullabye for a frigging dollar at a record exchange in Dayton. No love for the redheads in that town, apparently. I got Rumble Doll from Lala, which I think is still the best out of her three albums. (Plus, Jeff Porcaro, my favorite drummer, plays on a few tracks on that album)

I listened to it last night while I was cleaning. Good stuff. smile.gif Really well produced, too...just slick enough to feel polished but not too overdone to diminsh the attitude of the artist and the songs. Her guitarist is pretty solid too.

The title...i dunno. A play on an artists name as an album title is always a bit cheesy, even though I have no idea what the title means. Having said that, I own a bunch of Ozzy Osbourne albums, all of which are plays on the word 'Ozzy,' so obviously it never affected my listening habits. laugh.gif

I'm listening to it now! smile.gif It's actually pretty different from her two later CDs, a little jazzier & more acoustic sound and her singing is breathier and not as assertive or gritty as on Nothing But The Water. She wrote or co-wrote all the songs and sings & plays piano (Chuck Eller plays B-3 on many tracks). Some nice gospel backup on a few of the songs. Very nice stuff, but I'm not sure I'd know a lot of it was Grace if she wasn't smiling at me like Mona Lisa from the cover! Scott Tournet and Matt Burr of the Nocturnals both play on many of the tracks.

Incidentally, my recording of her show at the Allen Room a week ago already has almost 3,000 downloads on the Live Music Archive after just 5 days -- a personal benchmark! smile.gif

Eilen was number 3 on my top cd list for the past year. She's also number one on my must see in concert list.
You have to check out her Boundary County album too, its fantastic.
Plus she has an EP out called Heartache Boulevard with 5 songs,
3 of them previously unreleased.
I'll be checking out Ryan Bingham for sure, thanks Keith.

For some classic kd Lang, give the following a try: Hymns of the 49th Parallel (2004), Ingenue (her 1992 Grammy winner), and Absolute Torch and Twang (1989).

If you try Torch and Twang and like it, you'll also probably dig Shadowland and Angel With a Lariat.

She is a singer-songwriter from the Yukon.
Some old time folk/roots music

Dawn Landes- Fireproof
Some of you may recognize the name, as she's played on-stage with Hem before
and Steve Curtis/Bob Hoffnar/Gary Maurer (who also helped produce it) all play on it.

Little Pink- Gladly Would We Anchor
Some Americana/ country folk from Washington Post newspaper writer Mary Battiata and her band.
(I don't know if she is still with the newspaper)

Cara Luft- The Light Fantastic
Another Canadian, one of the founders of the Wailin' Jennys.
With songs that range from country to folk, roots rock and traditional.

Finally! Stupid Best Buy!

I think it's her best, yet (and the first two were great)! My favorite may be Alicia Ross, or is it I Make the Dough, You Get the Glory? She's got to be on the cusp of going wide with this one. Her songwriting just gets better and better with each album. Whew...

Achtung Baby - U2 ... seventeen years ago, i bought this the day it came out and took it home, popped it in the cd player, and immediately thought, 'they put the wrong disc in the case.' i got rid of it within a month.

recently, i heard some of these songs again after reading U2 by U2, learned a lot about what they set out to do with this recording, and decided to give it another try. 'course, by now One has achieved classic status with them (and rightly so), so perhaps it has aged well. we'll see ...
WalrusOct9
Wow...really? It's my second favorite U2 album behind Zooropa (which is kind of Achtung related anyway). The best songs on the album are the ones the band has largely forgotten though..."Ultraviolet," "Acrobat" and "Love Is Blindness" is one of the best song trios on any U2 disc.
