Kasey Chamber's latest CD Wayward Angel, as an import. It's yet to be released in the U.S. Wonderful album! smile.gif

When I grow up I wanna cowboy
With dust all over his jeans
With a horse named Jack and a 10-gallon hat
He is nice, but he looks so mean

If you were a cowboy
I wonder, could I be your girl?

Oh-de-lay-ee, oh-de-loh-oo
You rock my world
Oh-de-lay-ee, oh-de-loh-oo
When I grow up, I wanna be your girl

Any good?

Is there really anything on 'In Session' to justify more New Order live stuff?

If I thought "the Alltogether" was pretty god-awful, should I bother listening to the Blue Album?

smile.gif
jp-detroit
In Session - worth getting if you're a completist. Really good stuff, but how many live versions do you need? that's up to you. Some more recent songs, which is a good mix, some Joy Division covers. Worth picking up, I think.

Blue Album - I wasn't crazy about the Altogether either. I thought it was OK. I DID however LOVE The Middle of Nowhere. I think the Blue Album holds its own. Not as good as Middle of Nowhere, but better than Altogether.

k.d. lang - hymns of the 49th parallel

What do you think of this one, jp?

I bought this CD a week-and-a-half ago and absolutely LOVE it, start to finish. Espec. the covers of Neil Young and Jane Siberry songs ... and Joni's "A Case of You" ... kinda bold, remaking such great songs, but I think k.d. proves she is/was up to it.

Cool.

Do you know if it got a U.S. release or is this going to be another overpriced import? I heard some of the songs were significantly rearranged from the original versions, that might make it worthwhile.

Cyndi Lauper Three disc set.
jp-detroit
I saw Cyndi Lauper in concert Sunday night. She was PHENOMENAL as always.

Walrus, I got it as an import, but it wasn't overpriced. Try Amazon.co.uk, or perhaps 101cd.com? I think it's definitely worth getting. It nice to hear a different take on some of the classics.

Lynne - I loved the kd lang as well. I like the Cockburn song "One Day I Walk" just because I like Bruce Cockburn a LOT. She got criticized by some reviewers for not putting her own mark on the songs, but I think that reviewer missed the point. She was trying to expose these songs to a wider audience, and pay tribute to the artists at the same time - which in my mind is not a time for radical reworking. I thought she did a GREAT job on the whole thing.

I just discovered the neatest thing... on the iTunes store they have old OOP Verve albums (the label, not the band), and there's a couple real cool ones. One by Astrud Gilberto, and one other I'm forgetting. It's a great (and dangerous) place to discover new/old cool music you've never heard before. YAY!

*Feeling envious re: seeing Cyndi ... what a beautiful voice!*

: )

And regarding reviews of k.d.'s covers: I had not read any reviews, just happened to see the CD on a shelf at Target, noticed Young and Siberry on the label (I am not all that familiar with Jane's music, but Deb loves her, so I knew she'd have to be great!), along with "Hallelujah," and knew I had to have it!!

As far as k.d. not putting "her own mark" on the songs: I have to think that her voice is her mark; thus, she did indeed put her mark on them!!

Oddly enough: The Cockburn song is probably my least favorite on the CD, if I had to choose ... not that I don't like ol' Bruce ("Lovers in a Dangerous Time" is one of my very favorite songs, ever), it's just that this one hasn't hit me quite the way the others have. Give me time, though: I'll come around!

What's she singing now? Is she doing a mix of her old stuff? She does have new-ish disc out though, doesn't she?

Man, that debut CD takes me back!!

Her new CD "At Last" is very very good, as well as the accompanying DVD. She throws in some old stuff, but does lots of newer things as well. A good mix. I also got a True Colors T-shirt where she's holding a big Pride flag in her hands. WONDERFUL!

I was wanting new music, which I don't crave all that often - walking through Borders after work today the cover of a CD at one of the listening stations stopped me;

Martina Topley-Bird, Anything

It was and is one diggable cd. Man did I luck out.

Man, did I have a good find day today...

Manifest Discs and Tapes (Columbia's premier indie/used/hipster shop) just had a goldmine of good cheap stuff today, including some that I picked up...

-- Jet ("Get Born"). Holy crap. How did I not know these guys are so freakin' awesome? I thought good rock 'n' roll died w/ The Black Crowes...but man, these dudes just bring it. 5 stars.

-- The Thrills ("So Much For The City"). Again, I'd been meaning to buy it for a while, and 3 minutes into it I'm saying "How has it taken me so stinkin' long to get this!?" The original Jayhawks may be gone, but at least there's some more roots rockers out there besides Wilco to carry the load (i love Wilco incidentally)

-- Smashing Pumpkins ("Siamese Dream") An oldie that I've owned at least 3 different times in my life. It seems to be one of those discs that keeps getting borrowed/stolen/lost/scratched-to-hell.

I also picked up some cheap used DVDs (Secretary, Full Frontal, Gladiator) that I'm very excited about.
Mr. SoCal
I've been good the last few weeks and have stayed out of the used CD stores. Saturday night though, I did pick up 2 discs at the concert I attended:

Eleni Mandell - Afternoon

and

Eleni Mandell - Country for True Lovers
kalamazoo_music_lover
Caitlin Cary's "I'm Staying Out" (way more consistent than the first album), Los Lobos' "Kiko" (a little behind on that one...still tremendous), and Wilco's "A Ghost is Born" (not a planet shaker like the last one, but still worth every penny).

ooo... I got Hotel Light's debut eponymous CD in the mail yesterday... if you are asking "who is Hotel Lights?"... well...

Hotel Lights is the new band fronted by Darren Jessee...

Who's Darren Jessee? He was the drummer for the band Ben Folds Five. He wrote a beautiful song ("Magic") on their last CD (Reinhold Messner). On Hotel Lights he sings and plays guitar.

Hotel Lights is completely indie. They sell via shows and via the wonderful indie online venue of CD Baby. For those of you who do not know CD Baby... well, they're the best thing to indie music since bumper stickers over urinals.

I CD Baby.

Heh. That's for the casual fans.

Real fans bought both versions of the import Beautiful Day, Stuck In A Moment, Elevation, and Walk On singles. cool.gif

The Elevation influx mix kicks ass though...they used it as their intro music on the tour, I still get goosebumps whenever I hear it start. smile.gif
