Get the bootleg of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot demos, which includes vastly different versions of most of the YHF songs as well as a couple of solid as-yet unreleased songs as well. Best thing Wilco ever did.

I think Sky Blue Sky would be a good record if I could stay awake through all of it. After putting out a fairly rockin' live record in '05, I was kind of disappointed that they proceeded to dispose of that energy and make a real snoozer. I mean, it works for Hem and the Junkies, but I don't know if I'm feeling it from Tweedy. Oh well. Check out the YHF bootleg...awesome stuff.

The Great Lost Performance
On July 27, 1990, Johnny Cash took his revue to The Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park, New Jersey, and performed a truly unique and wonderful concert, captured on multi-tracks that lay dormant until recently mixed and edited for this near hour-long CD. Terrific performances of his greatest hits are here I Walk The Line, Ring Of Fire, etc. A wonderfully upbeat Cash and wife June Carter Cash’s stories and introductions punctuate the music; June contributes a boisterous Jackson duet with Johnny; local songstress Lucy Clark duets on the first performance anywhere at the time of Johnny’s What Is Man?; and the singer performs the only recorded version anywhere of the classic gospel song Wonderful Time Up There. A great lost performance is found.

1. Ring of Fire
2. Life's Railway to Heaven
3. Wonderful Time Up There
4. Folsom Prison Blues
5. Sunday Morning Coming Down
6. What Is Man - Johnny Cash, Lucy Clark
7. Forty Shades of Green
8. Come Along and Ride This Train
9. Five Feet High and Rising
10. Pickin' Time
11. Beautiful Life
12. Hey Porter
13. Ragged Old Flag
14. Tennessee Flat Top Box
15. (Ghost) Riders in the Sky
16. Jackson - Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash
17. Wreck of Old '97 - Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash
18. I Walk the Line

wow! very nice.

Not sure if that's still active, but it's worth a shot.

Jason is John Prine's guitarist, and hails from Bloomington IN. He played guitar for Iris DeMent at her show at BB King's NYC club Friday night, and also performed a captivating opening set. Besides being a first-rate picker, he's also a very talented singer/songwriter -- there are some really good songs on here!

We saw Iris back in April in Nashville and Jason opened for her, and I was really impressed with his playing. We picked up Lazy Afternoon and Live and Otherwise, Volume 1 (which we liked even more). John even showed up, over half way thru the show, and dueted with Iris on In Spite of Ourselves, We Could, and Unwed Fathers. What a great show! And how about that stage fright?!?! Pretty amazing, wasn't it?

We've got pieces of me which was very good and Bittertown which is great.

I've been a little leary of this one since Tim McGraw produced it. What do you think of it?
spr
Greetings folks.. been away for a bit... but Im baaaaaaaaaack... ;-)

Here is what I picked up recently:

Sandi Thom - Smile... It Confuses People
She draws alot of comparisons with KT Tunstall, and I can see that. She is a bit more poppy, but shows real talent. Some of the songs are infectiously snappy. (Try 'Human Jukebox', 'When Horesepower Meant What it Said'... I think the track 'I Wish I was a Punkrocker...' must have aired on some TV show or something.. it gets lots of chatter.

The Blow - Paper Television
Alt-electronic-clubby stuff with actual melodies. Only listened a couple of times so far, but its good so far.

Patrick Park - Loneliness Knows My Name
The tired old phrase 'singer songwriter' does apply here. Varied sounds on this CD from folky acoustic to moderate grit, and a touch of country - which I wont hold against it - yet. ( tongue.gif ). This is worth checking out.

Hem - Funnel Cloud
Posting a Hem review on this board to this bunch seems a bit redundant. Im not as taken with this as I am with Rabbit Songs, but its still very good, and the music and vocals are well... solid. I need to listen to this a few more times.

Stars - Set Yourself On Fire
Indy stuff that I so far.. have not been able to really appreciate. Shins-like in many ways.

Tegan & Sara - The Con
Just got this yesterday. Unique and creative effort, interesting vocals by this pair.

Sara Bareilles - Little Voice
Pop. Not really my style. A couple of OK tracks... 'Vegas'... 'One Sweet Love'... maybe some others
Worth noting that this girl can indeed sing - but not enough to save this from my unused heap.

Scissor Sisters - Ta Dah
I had so much fun with their last self titled release.. I just couldnt help buying this one. The first track
'I dont feel like dancin' just blows my mind back to 1970s Elton John/Bay City Rollers/Bee Gees/Abba and the like. 'Oooh' is pretty good too as are some other tracks, but I dont think its quite as good as the last one.

A few other Lala pickups....

Phil Keaggy.. 'Beyond Nature' - Melodic Acoustic Guitar Ambient Loveliness...

Tori Amos - Tales of a Librarian
I have never really have been taken by Tori.... thought I would give this a spin..

Little River Band - All Time Greatest Hits
Laugh. I cant help it. I love some of this stuff. 'Cool Change', 'Lady', 'Take it Easy on Me',
'Lonesome Looser', 'Reminiscing'.... delectable cheesiness. Yum.

Katrina Parker - Only Dreaming
meh. A pretty voice, but this one will be going back to Lala if anyone actually ever requests it.

Over The Rhine - Eve
I actually traded away 'Patience' which wasnt really sticking to me for Eve, which I think is pretty smokin'.

I got others too... but I'll post them some other time.. I have to actually get some work done here....

Unrelated commentary....

Great Lake Swimmers - Ongiara
I dont know what it is about this CD... I keep coming back to it. Initially, I wrote off the warbling vocals, melancholy soundscapes, and 'sameness' of all the tracks as faults. Im starting to believe this CD is downright fantastic. You know, I used to (a loooong time ago) be an aspiring artist - and this CD just makes me want to break out the paper and charcoals and simply draw - it consistently sends me floating off into some other dreamspace. I dont know what that says about this music, but if you are looking for some sort of vocal/ambient sound filler to accompany creative work - this works.

1. Tommy Dorsey - Dedicated to You
2. Tom Jones - It's Not Unusual
3. SwingaBillyty - Billy Maxted and his Manhattan Jazz Band
4. Herb Alpert & the TJB - Whipped Cream and Other Delights

A good start... did you get both discs of it?
*** 'Both'?? Nah. This is just a crappy LaLa leftover. Just the CD without the DVD.

While I can't say I'd condone trading away Patience, at least you got Eve.
*** Yeah, I know. OtR fan site. ;-) I knew I could get yelled at for fessing up.
Want to know why I dumped it.... really? Well, primarily because it seems like Im just not a huge fan of their very early stuff... but also (partly) because I didnt have the artwork for it. I hate not having the booklet. Its annoying. I got it off of the OtR site that way, and that disk was always seen by me as a 2nd class citizen. How trite is that?
theaterboi01

Madeleine Peyroux Careless Love: her vocals are reminiscent to me of Billie Holiday..but on key and never slurred and drunken..her timing is impeccable.. I'm eager to get the rest of her albums as well.

Saving Jane One Girl Revolution... a great cd.. I'm happy with this one.. pop rock to the core.. but I love the band and the lead singer's raspy vocals.

HAHA I guess so.. didn't even realize that! LOL well I just Bought the other two Madeleine Peyroux cds.. Dreamland and Half the Perfect World and managed to snag some "rare" tracks from a friend of mine... let me just say this woman has me floored and I'm officially along for the ride.... she's put me back in my blues/jazz phase which meant I was sitting in the corner of my new house in my big comfy chair with a bottle of wine and my ipod sending me into another time and place LOL

it definitely has more gloss to it in the way of production, but it doesn't detract from her music or vocals that much imo.
i still like bittertown better than this one as of right now. if you go to borders, they have an exclusive dvd included, which includes a documentary, interviews, and 2 live performances.

Must be an independent store thing:

Leigh Nash - Blue on Blue
Indigo Girls - Strange Fire
John Coltrane - The Classic Quartet: Complete Impulse! Studio Recordings

...and that $90 box set was only $15 by the time I finished negotiating at that yard sale. I paid $1.50 for Strange Fire and $5 for Blue on Blue. I am a cheapskate but I considered Nash and Coltrane to be splurges - it looks like I lucked out on finding a great starting place for Coltrane though!

i picked this up today after his in-store performance @ ear x-tacy. he did a nice 5-6 song set. surprisingly, hardly anyone was there, maybe 30-40 people that seemed to be there more to shop than see him. he hung around, chatted and drank a couple of cups of coffee after he played. he jokingly said "i need a sharpie, i'm gonna have to steal one from somebody!" so i said "no need to steal, you can have mine" and stuck it in his shirt pocket (his hands were full), he smiled and said "thanks, i'd give you a cd but you've already got one." to which i replied..."well, got any promo posters?" and he asked his label rep that was there to go out to the van and grab one for me, just before he signed it he said "hey i'll use my new sharpie" (it was pretty funny, he was very impressed with the "clickable" sharpie). pretty nice trade.

he was about 30 minutes late and he explained by telling a story that on his way in from st. louis that they stopped for gas, at the pump he saw the time and realized for the first time that he had crossed into eastern time and he had just assumed that louisville was on central, not eastern. so he paniced, ran in, hustled up the band, they all rushed out, jumped in the van and took off. about 5 miles down the interstate, the bass player said..."hey mark...i don't remember you paying for the gas." he slammed on the brakes, cut across the median doubled back to find a state trooper was already at the station filling out a report and about to issue an "all points bulletin" on his van. so he laughed and said, a couple of more miles and a few minutes later and we probably would be in jail in some small kentucky town and not here playing for you now.

indie folk-pop. she opened a date or 2 for the Cowboy Junkies earlier this summer.

My last few albums purchased:

You Follow Me by Nina Nastasia and Jim White. Can't say that I like this spare acoustic guitar + drums production quite as well as Nina's earlier recordings with their brilliant string arrangements, but this is still a very affecting and unique album, musically and lyrically. Nina and Jim are kinda like the anti-White Stripes.

Unglamorous by Lori McKenna. As I've remarked elsewhere, I love most of the songs (several of which have appeared on Lori's earlier albums) on this Nashville-produced CD but hate the flat-sounding mastering that squeezed all the dynamics out of these recordings.

(and yes, Kent and I listen to a lot of the same CDs smile.gif)

Live at Lupo's by Little Feat. This totally smoking concert from 2003 is part of eMusic's exclusive live series. Great show by one of the original jam bands and an excellent recording, can't wait to see them again next month!

This Is Somewhere by Grace Potter & the Nocturnals. This woman sure can sing and she & her band totally rock! A dozen mostly really good songs about the tribulations of life, love and the road.

Eskimo by The Residents. Like most of their music, this remarkable album by the anonymous and perversely unconventional band from Louisiana is impossible to describe in mere words. Suffice to say it aspires to convey the hard essentials of life in the Arctic in half an hour by means of chants, cries, barks, drum beats and often amazing sonic effects, all punctuated by howling winds. Put on the headphones and prepare for a unique experience!
bornagain
Lifeline - Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals ... very nice!

It's Not Big, It's Large - Lyle Lovett and his Large Band ... i love Lyle and the new one is smokin' as usual (with an appearance by Guy Clark, too).

The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter - Josh Ritter - I'll admit, this one has taken me a bit to get into. But, I can't help but think that it will make it on my top-10 of 2007.
