I was just given an advanced copy of the new Kelly Clarkson album... gotta say its good.. but it took more than one listen to get me there.. definitely a very raw emotional album for her......

the new Kelly Clarkson album... gotta say its good..

she does have a strong voice, and as "pop" hits go, that one song she had a year or so was pretty good.

but, fair or not, i don't know if i could ever get over the fact that she was the girl that won that music game show. dry.gif

speaking of 'pop' and hip-pop....

this is my brother-in-law... most of his stuff I simply cant get into..though I had to grudgingly admit the track he has called 'My Show' (as in... how silly it is to have gameshows to generate music...') is, if nothing else, sonic entertainment. The stream I suppose doesnt help it much, it sounds cruddy.

I know the feeling.. I didnt' get into her until last year for that very same reason.. then I gave her cd a shot and liked what i heard... the new cd is more rock influenced.. and a far cry from either of her last two cds....
WalrusOct9
Well, she actually wrote (or co-wrote, at least...you can read into that any way you want) most of her new CD...so we'll see how it does vs. the Max Martin generated stuff she did a couple years ago. She had a couple of good pop songs, but those songs didn't really have anything to do with her beyond her lead vocal. The fall of pop stars seems to happen when they start trying to take over creatively, so we'll see if she does any better.
WalrusOct9
Well, apparently Kelly's tour is now canceled, before the album has even dropped.

Clarkson may have made a "raw, emotional album" that may take a few listens to "get," but I have a feeling the majority of her audience isn't the type that will bother with repeated listens of a "challenging" album. She can compare her album to Nebraska all she wants (http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20038840_20038841_20038857_4,00.html) but Springsteen's pre-Born In The USA audience is a lot different than Clarkson's manufactured popularity.

I feel kind of bad for her, I think this whole idea of trying to be taken seriously and take control of her music is going to backfire...but on the other hand, she's trying to create the kind of musical credibility in one album that one only gets through long-term artistic growth and paying your dues by playing bars and clubs and honing your writing for several years before you get your "break." I feel bad for her, but at the same time, really kind of think she has it coming, for being someone who used a crappy TV show to skip the years and years of hard work real musicians have to do to "make it."

Im finding it very cool, so I ordered 'Mothers Daughter' too.
reminds me a little of Psapp, sorta. Laid back, smart... interesting.

Amy Rigby 'Little Fugitive'. Think Mary Prankster meets Liz Phair.

Kris Delmhorst 'Five Stories'. I loved Strange conversation, so looking forward to this...

Well ... that's a little hard to answer because we have all of hers, but if you want a really good overview of her first three cds, pick up 18 again which is a compilation of songs from them with a fantastic bonus track called "Keep It To Yourself." Her third cd, The Sugar Tree, was produced in Nashville and is more country than the others (BTW, this was produced by Brad Jones and Mickey Grimm plays on it). On Til the Wheels Fall Off, she sings the title track with Todd Snider, as well as "Are We Ever Gonna Have Sex, Again?" You can't really go too wrong with any of them.

If you don't mind dropping some serious money to investigate Richard, you couldn't find a better overview of his work than this: RT: The Live and Music of Richard Thompson. The sound quality can vary, but what a treasure!

also, besides his more serious work, thompson is known for his wit, both in his live performances and in a few of his songs. "i agree with pat matheney" (and "dear janet jackson" too) is a great example, it's written about kenny g deciding to dub himself into a duet w/one of RT's heroes, louis armstrong. and it's hilarious...

I'm sure I'm the only one here who cares, but....

5 Genesis albums from 1976-1982 newly remixed and remastered, plus 5.1 mixes and a 6th disc of all the non-album tracks from the era. Kind of pricey on Amazon, but BestBuy's website had a sale for $49.99, and at that point I couldn't resist.

The new stereo mixes are amazing, I'm hearing things I never heard before, and on my favorite Genesis album, A Trick Of The Tail, the vocals are much more prominent than they were on the original mix, making it sound much stronger. There's a lot of other little nuances I'm noticing now, even though I've heard these albums hundreds of times. Good stuff. smile.gif

Unfortunately I still have nothing to play the 5.1 stuff on...hopefully someday. I'm amassing a pretty good collection of SACD's and DVD-A's that I can't yet play...Dylan, Genesis, early Elton, Derek & The Dominoes, NIN...I wish the labels were actually interested in hi-res audio, even if it's just a cult thing.

yeah yeah yeah... I know you like to rattle off 25 names just to get me rolling...

Cockburn - just got Dancing in the Dragons Jaws, which includes one of my hands down favorite songs of all time... Wondering where the Lions are. I've only sampled his stuff though and I have never really gotten into him. If I had a Rocket Launcher? meh. no real interest. I'll give this CD my first honest listen to Bruce though... we will see... his music *should* be right up my alley.

Keaggy - Im not into the christian rock thing, but I have his instrumental CD Roundabout which is fantastic, I love it. Keb Mo I have a few singles from, but have yet to listem to him too.

Van Morrison, Buffett... always favorites.

The others... sheesh. I dunno. I've purchased and have listened to about 150 CD's in the last year... and for me - Im about maxed out at that rate. I'm getting that burned out feeling so I think I need to ease up and just enjoy some of it for a couple of months... smile.gif Thanks for the leads.... I just started listening to Cockburn in earnest, a couple years back, and, as a guitarist, he blows me away every bit as much as Richard does. I have found that you do have to be a little choosy about his catalog, though. My favorites that I've picked up, so far, include The Charity of Night, Breakfast In New Orleans Dinner In Timbuktu, You've Never Seen Everything, and Life Short Call Now.

Ugh...I've tried to get through it 3 or 4 different times, and it's soooo boring. Individually there's a few good songs on it, but it's the musical equivalent of a bottle of ambien. Jeff Tweedy needs to a) stop being a pretentious indie rock guy and b) drink a case of red bull before going into the studio again.

Becky turned me on to Feist. I quite like her new album...have to get around to listening to some of her old stuff though.

Went to Nashville yesterday to see Jonell Mosser at the Bluebird, last night (our fifth show and counting - fantastic show!), as well as the Chinese art exhibit at the Frist, and picked up the following at Grimey's and The Great Escape:

High Winds Night Sky - Bruce Cockburn

Court and Spark - Joni Mitchell ... have started listening to this.

Dead Letter Office - REM ... had a cassette of this for years that I eventually got rid of. glad to have it back. worth it just for the Pylon and Velvet Underground covers.

Viva Satellite - Todd Snider ... this really is the album Tom Petty never made (with Todd's own lyrical bent, intact)!

June - Swan Dive ... can't wait to hear this! 'love Until.

Miles Away - Gina Villalobos ... remember when folks kept getting tagged as the new Dylan? this gal IS the new Lucinda!

The Ringing Bell - Derek Webb

Just got my SACD-remastered version of Bob Dylan's Street Legal...not his best album (although not his worst) but as with the other hybrid-SACD remasters, the remastered sound is immaculate. Sadly I don't think they're going to give the rest of his catalog the same treatment beyond the 15 discs that were reissued in 2003.

rather karin-like vocals, piano based, not bad

rootsy, a very nice album, sounds like Be Good Tanyas/ Jolie Holland/even Gillian Welch.

Found these 2 LP's for 60 cents each at the little Catholic thrift shop, which has a very small selection of LP's:

Leonard Cohen
- Songs from a Room (1969)

John McCormack
- Sings Irish Songs (1958*) Long Playing record, RCA Camden, NJ
* 14 recordings from 1911 - 1927. Most of these songs are from what is considered his "acoustic era", the pre-1925 period.
Here is a biography of this great Irish tenor, who was born in Athlone, Ireland on June 14, 1884. After winning a song contest in 1905, he went to Italy, studied under maestro Sabbatini, and made his debut in Savona in 1906. He made his debut at the Manhattan Opera House in NYC in Traviata in 1909. The greater part of his career was made as a concert singer and story teller through his singing of Irish songs.
