Kate Havnevik- Melankton
She's Norweigan, musically very much in the vein of Imogen Heap/Bjork/Hooverphonic.
She has lead sung for Royksopp and on this album Guy Sigsworthy helps her out with electronic
beats and co-wrote 4 of the songs. He's the guy from Frou Frou.

edit- walrus steve, you should dig this stuff

for buddy, i like pretty much everything he's done. but off the top of my head, i really love "cruel moon" & "universal united house of prayer" (dylan's "with god on our side" alone is worth buying the cd). his work w/wife julie is worth a listen too.

w/allison, "show" (her live cd/dvd) is a must, as is "the duel," a truly a brilliant piece of work and her best to date. imho, pass on her newest "getting somewhere" (produced by new hubby, steve earle) with a couple of exceptions, it's pretty forgetable.

I know you asked for Bill's recommendations and not mine, but I personally give my highest marks to Alison Moorer's The Hardest Part. Then again, I don't yet own either of the two discs that Bill mentioned.

I had this for a brief shining moment... got it from Lala, then re-Lala'd it. It was good, but to me it sounded like a watered down Imbruglia/Torrini. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I was looking more for a FrouFrou/Bjorkish thing (like the music rags tended to spout off about in reviews). I think anyone who reviews music does this (compare one artist to another)... I do it a bunch. Sometimes it works, this time it didn't work for me. The 1st single (I forget the name of it) was really good, but the rest of the album didn't match its intensity/brilliance for me (much like KT Tunstall & Damien Rice for me, too).

Had I not been in purge mode, I think I would'a kept it. I just don't think it was a "must own this or die" album. A good start (assuming it's her debut)... I'll probably check her out in the future...

It didnt do it for me either. Sounded like just more bubblegum electronica.. and couldnt hold my interest as well as Imogen Heaps 'Speak For Yourself' much less her frou frou stuff. Im going to give it a few more spins before completely ignoring it, but so far - its got no teeth.

After I posted that I realized I don't have 1000 Kisses so it could be a little while before the collection gets rounded off fully.
I've bought 6 cd's in the past two weeks - that's HUGE for me. So I gotta let those get under my skin first.

I binged this week:

Grace Potter & the Nocturnals - Nothing But The Water - purchased as a gift

Bliss - Quite Letters (U.S. Edition)

Jonatha Brooke - Careful What You Wish For

Thomas Dybdahl - Science

Bernard Fanning - Tea & Sympathy

Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet
WalrusOct9
Well, doesn't qualify as "purchased" since even if I had enough money left over after bills to buy a CD, the album is never freaking coming out anyway...but I've been jamming the "new" Guns N' Roses leaks from the "we're not going to release it, just talk about it a lot" Chinese Democracy album. And as much as I think Axl's a douche for whatever is holding the real album up, the tunes and the recordings are awesome. If the album actually really existed, it definitely has the potential to make the mythical "rock album I've been waiting for someone to make for the last 10 years" status.

So, a couple weeks back, we saw Iris Dement in Nashville at the Belcourt Theater, which was a heck of a show, by the way. We've been fans of Iris since Infamous Angel came out back in 1992. Well, if you're a fan of Iris and you've never seen her, try to catch her. It's an amazing thing to see. The woman has serious stagefright, but when she opens her mouth to sing, she simply blows you away. And ... she played a two hour show. Little over half way thru, John Prine showed up and sang In Spite of Ourselves, We Could, and Unwed Fathers with her. What a treat!

Iris' opening act was a super guitarist named Jason Wilber who has been playing for John Prine for ten years. I picked up the two cds he had for sale, Live and Otherwise Volume 1 and Lazy Afternoon. Really enjoyed his (unfortunately) brief set, but what a nice guy! Jason and David Jacques also backed up Iris.

My latest acquistion is boys and girls in America by The Hold Steady. They rock! They are the cover story in the latest issue of Paste and had two songs on this month's sampler. If you're a Springsteen and/or Thin Lizzy Fan, these guys are the band to hear.

I think having drinks w/ Keith, Bill & Jim in the same venue has created a longer than short term CD purchasing habit, 'cause for someone who rarely purchases a handfull of cd's in several months, much less one month, I'm on a freaking roll.

Just purchased:

Yes I think we did a good job of muttering subliminal messages of "Buy more CD's, buy more CD's, you know you wanta" during the drinks. Then I added the final ingredient "CD addictionahol" to my beer and let you taste it.

However, Bill is a great enabler-He found at least 2 CD's for me during the Cinci trip. I in turn did the same for Kent. Its all a viscious circle. But an enjoyable one at that.

i haven't gotten into multiple listens on it yet, but does have a feel for earlier cranberries.
i'll know more how i feel about it after 3 listens or so. the opening track 'ordinary day' is quite good.
she hasn't lost anything vocally, thats for sure.
she is also on leno tonight 5/18.

heres what allmusic has to say
QUOTE
It's been a long period of quiet for Dolores O'Riordan, the lead singer of the Cranberries. Her band quietly disbanded after the 2001 release of Wake Up and Smell the Coffee and although she didn't disappear, O'Riordan surely wasn't overly active, popping up on music by Angelo Badalamenti and Zucchero but primarily devoting herself to family affairs before she set out to record her solo debut with producer Youth in 2006. Released the following year, Are You Listening sidesteps the turgid proggy inclinations of latter-day Cranberries albums while also avoiding the awkward attempts at hard rock that plagued some of the band's mid-period albums. So, it returns O'Riordan to her strengths: melodic, atmospheric, mildly brooding pop. But Are You Listening isn't exactly a dead ringer for Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? Youth gives this album drama, grandeur, and muscle, so it sounds positively cinematic where early Cranberries was quiet and insular. Of course, this sense of scale is only appropriate for the modern-day Dolores O'Riordan, who has long been a star but where that sense of confidence could turn indulgent on latter-day Cranberries albums, she's now relatively humble and direct, singing songs about family, faith, and nostalgia that sound relatable to fans who have grown up with her and are also facing similar issues. And that's why Are You Listening is a success as a solo debut: it doesn't resurrect O'Riordan's earliest work as much as reconnect with it, and she hasn't sounded this purposeful, or made a record this satisfying, since the days of "Linger."

You Can't Win - Dolorean

For fans of the Red House Painters and Cowboy Junkies...need I say more?

Beachcomber Blues does it for me, almost Beck Seachange sound.

This is almost slowcore sporting acoustic guitars and piano.

Kudos to Kent (sounds like like a shoe gazer band...) So yeah, I heard one song on Kent's Maybe Tomorrow Comp by Dolorean and the next day I own the CD. Gotta start thinking about a comp of my own soon...

Picked up the last two Byrds albums, Byrdmaniax and Farther Along in their expanded and remastered editions for $5.99 each...probably not the band's finest hour, but apparently these albums went out of print a few years ago and are pretty tough to find.

I just managed to get a copy of Alanis Morissette's "Vancouver Sessions".. its an amazing collection of a lot of her songs (not on Jagged Little Pill) done acoustically I am in so much love with this right now... its mostly fan released material so its not available to buy so if anyone else wants a copy I'll gladly post a link... just send me a PM.... but trust me its AMAZING AMAZING stuff!
