New CDs given to me by my wife for Christmas, yesterday:
West of the West - Dave Alvin (songs from California songwriters) This is cool. Can't wait to give it another listen.
full service no waiting - Peter Case Haven't listened to much of this, yet, but have heard most of these songs done by other folks on the A Case for Case tribute CD.
Big Iron World - Old Crow Medicine Show This is excellent! Have listened through it, a couple times, already.
Hello Starling - Josh Ritter Haven't listened to this, yet, but can't wait.
9 - Damien Rice Haven't listened to this, yet, either, but looking forward to it. Loved O!
Long Island Shores - Mindy Smith Haven't listened to this, yet, either, but looking forward to it. Loved One Moment More!
Yell Fire! - Michael Franti and Spearhead Listened to this, earlier this evening, and it is fantastic! Can't wait to listen to it, again! Franti is this generation's Bob Marley.
Saint Dominic's Preview - Van Morrison I love this album! It's one of my favorites of Van's! Thrilled to finally have it on CD.

Raided the uber-bargain bin of one of the record stores I used to go to near my parents' house. Got the new Polyphonic Spree EP, Mike Peters' (of the Alarm) solo album Rise, Our Lady Peace's Spiritual Machines, a Waterboys album, since a friend of mine actually knows Mike Scott and raves about them all the time, and my extravagant ($6) purchase, Robert Randolph's Colorblind. 5 discs, around $20. That's my kind of shopping.

Nuclear Daydream - Joseph Arthur
Bought (today) with a little Christmas money since it didn't make it onto my list before my wife took it for her holiday shopping. Very cool...

"One of the best guitar albums in ages; one of the best discs this year" - Billboard review
"This music is the sound of passion as interpreted by and spoken for in a new rock and roll language." - Allmusic.com
"An idiosyncratic dueling-guitar style that brims with rock 'n' roll energy" - The Boston Globe
Rodrigo and Gabriela have finished off their John Leckie (Radiohead, Stone Roses, New Order and Muse) produced studio album. World renowned violinist Roby Lakatos, is guesting on two of the tracks.

Yep, I'm really liking this one.
I see she's going to be in Chicago on March 10-11, might have to venture down there for those 2 days, one at the Old Town School of Folk Music on the 11th.
Plus she's in Columbus OH on Jan 19th at the Performing Arts Center (for all you Ohioans), and then she does a California swing for most of February.
Thanks again for the recommendation.

Twang on a Wire - Kate Campbell
For the Living of These Days - Kate Campbell with Spooner Oldham
Picked both of these up at the Kate Campbell / Spooner Oldham show at the Princess Theater, right here in Decatur, AL, this evening.
I don't know if Kate is touring with Spooner or if this show just got arranged because Decatur's close enough to Muscle Shoals, but if you hear anything about such a show near you, check it out for some awesome southern soul and gospel. Seriously righteous stuff!

on innervisons:

last week I picked up Despite Our Differences by the Indigo Girls... once again I only listen to the odd numbered tracks. I wish Emily Saliers would just put out a solo disc, but Amy Ray seems to be the only one with enough gumption.
Also, recently acquired in-store-plays from work include The Decemberists, Amos Lee, and Mindy Smith- I am most excited about the latter.

*laugh*
I KNEW I was going to get called out on that one.
I'm such a hard-a$$ when ranking my own music collection. 5 stars means to me, an entire collection of hard-to-pass up music, a collection or body of work that is at the very least surprisingly wonderful if not revolutionary and perhaps forcably interesting either lyrically and/or musically. But...without babling on like an idiot, I must say I liked Ohio and Drunkards Prayer both more than GDBD. You've got me wondering suddenly which albums I would rank as 5 stars.... This evil 'ipod' thing has gotten me into so many bad habits, including ranking individual songs and not often listening to an album start to finish....a failing... I know... (sob) I'm going to go pick a few '5-star' CD's and report back. (as if anyone actually cared. ;-) )
Yes, Rabbit songs is my first Hem album.. and I was quite (and happily) surprised to see OtR and Hem have done shows together! They.. or she... 'Hem' does tend to have a little more country twang than I like.... I will give this one a spin again. I love 'Betting on Trains'.... one of my recent favorites.

Yes, and I was very happy to attend a couple of them! A dream bill as far as I'm concerned, but I've discovered fans of one are not necessarily enamored of the other. Don't let the pedal steel scare you, Hem is not really very country-ish. You can check out a couple of good live recordings made by forum members at
http://www.archive.org/details/hem2006-09-23.aud.flac16 and
http://www.archive.org/details/hem2006-10-01.flac16 .
Most of us 'round here are very interested in hearing about each others' favorite music, btw. I've discovered so many artists I love thanks to people in the orchard!
I'd like to revise my previous 'ratings':
Beautiful Girls: Water "***"
Clearly I was mistaken on this. This bunch has a groove very similar to Donovan Frankenwriter or perhaps Jack Johnson.
Try the tracks 'Music' and 'Periscope'. Almost, but not quite-sandals-on-the-beach-dont-be-a-square-man stuff. Fun. And some decent guitar work to boot.
Hem: Rabbit Songs "***"
There are some sleepers on this CD. 'Night Like a River', 'Sailor', and 'All that Im good for' are a few. The prevalance of pedal steel and fiddle still sets my teeth on edge - but no doubt this is quality work. The instrumental interludes (polys Dress, Waltz...) are perfect on this set.

Not that anyone here needs reviews from me...
