Momentary Lapse definitely has it's bits. . .but if I'm in a good 'floyd mood' for lack of non-incriminating term, I can make it through ok.

plus these two were nice additions, to sort of bookend what collection of Floyd I already have. And I didn't pay anything. . . .So it was kind of hard to pass up.
I really dig Learning To Fly...even have the CD single. I have all the PF LPs on CD except Animals which just didn't do it for me. I guess I wanted more Wish You Were Here when they did Animals... IMO, the Wall could have been 1 very good LP. After that, the albums just were not up to par, but there were still strokes of genuis.
Anybody here have any Pineapple Theif or Satellite? I hear the are between PF and Porcupine Tree. I recently picked up It. It's CD Order Through Chaos is interesting, but not quite as PF/PT as I was expecting. But if you really like PF, you gotta get RPWL's World Through My Eyes.

IIRC, Amazon recommended them to me since I like Dead Can Dance. About a month or two ago I ran across a used copy of an earlier Vas CD called
Offerings, so I picked it up and liked it well enough that I was willing to get
In The Garden Of Souls as well when I found it.
Bother members of Vas have other projects (solo and otherwise) that they've been involved with that I need to start looking for now.

I"d say he needs NO-Jack for his CD's.
Our lab manager got around this same problem by making two copies and giving the copy to her son. That way if he left it out in the car and it got toasted/scratched, she still had the original. Still the ripping to Itunes is probably a good idea too.

New - I like them both!
Till the Sun Turns Black - Ray Lamontagne
Nightcrawler - Pete Yorn
Used CD'sAnywhere (import) - Beth Orton ("includes exclusive new song plus enhanced video")
- contains 3 versions of Anywhere, plus Beautiful World
Sanctuary - 20 Years of Windham Hill (double CD)
French Blend: Celtic Music's French Odyssey
The 20 years of Windham Hill was a treat to find for $2 - am listening to the first CD now and it is a really beautiful, acoustic, instrumental compilation. The double CD contains a collection of 35 artists. Haven't listened to the Celitc/French yet nor the entire Beth Orton CD. Haven't seen the video as I couldn't figure out how to do it. Popped in in the computer and apparently I need a software called Quicktime installed to watch it. Lucky for me, the needed Quicktime software that I need to install is also on the Beth CD. Unfortunately, I was not knowledgeable enough with the software(/loading software in general) to get it to load on the puter.

New
Freddie Hubbard: Here to Stay - Rudy Van Gelder Edition. New 2006 24-bit remaster, recorded about 7 miles from where I grew up, December 27, 1962 at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.
Dexter Gordon: A Swingin' Affair - Rudy Van Gelder Edition. New 2005 24-bit remaster, recorded at RVG's Englewood Cliffs studio also. Got this at the "used" price because a hinge was damaged.
Used
John Coltrane: Blue Train. Not sure when this was recorded, but it has Philly Joe Jones on drums, and he played also on the Freddie Hubbard CD recording above. Just can't get enough of his drumming!
All the music above is so full of surprises, so interesting, so full of great musicianship. The anti-boring, this music is called "hard bop". It seems I can't get enough of it lately, and yet I can listen to the same CD's that I have and be just as blown away the 2nd or 3rd time around with the hard bop CD's I have in my collection as when I heard them the first time. Did I mention that I really like Philly Joe Jones?
Thank you, Rudy Van Gelder, wherever you are. You've publicly stated that you feel like you have a mission to deliver this music to people once again and have taken the effort to digitally remaster so many gems & make them available to a new generation. God bless.

I've been enjoying the classic jazz era stuff lately as well, and Blue Train certainly ranks up there in the top 10 of all time jazz classics.
re: RVG remasters, for the most part they're great, but you probably want to stay away from Sonny Rollins' Saxophone Collossus (if you haven't gotten it already, which you should), as it has flutters and channel drops that the previous issue doesn't have. I think he dropped the ball a little on that one.

People have commented on the flutter in both the 1999 K2 20bit and the 2006 RVG 24bit remastered editions. The rumor going around was/is that the master tape has some problems in it at particular spots. Whether that is true or not I don't know. It is a great album though, well worth purchasing in whatever format you like.
Brookd
Sep 17 2006, 01:07 AM
that might be true of the remasters, I've not heard the 20bit one (I have heard that about the master tapes too). I got a copy of the regular old "original jazz masters" edition from the library and compared it to my RVG, and the OJM edition did not have the flutter/drop in this one specific spot I checked that is obvious on the RVG.
on topic: I just spent 23 bucks this morning on iTunes gathering up a bunch of U2 bsides (I'm a little late, I know). but there are 10 or so originals (i.e. not remixes or live) that you can only get by buying the whole shbang, which sucks, because a few of those sounded great (Native Son for one). but I'm not going to drop 150 for 10 tracks. so, you know, if any of y'all have the whole package and want to email me, maybe you can "let me know how you like those tracks" (nudge nudge wink wink), and I can maybe let you know how I like some other tracks or something...
either way, I'm pretty happy with my new homemade U2 bsides CD.

ps. yojimbo - how's about ranking like your top 20 Coltrane CDs somewhere? that 44 in your sig made me go "oooh" like at a fireworks show just now. I'm fairly new to jazz (past couple years only) and have what I think are probably considered Coltranes 10 best CDs, but I'm looking to expand that collection as he's one of my favs.

that number in your sig is already squirting all over the place... might as well go with it! (plus I think others would be interested in that info too). but whichever way you like is cool with me...
(oh, and in response to that "other" line in your sig that I can't help but feel a little responsible for, I would say that OCD is when you have over a hundred CDs still shrink-wrapped and yet you continue to buy more. opening and listening to them is just simple common sense. BUT...last week I found a CD at the library that I owned but had not yet opened, and so I was able to listen to it and then return the unopened CD for store credit. so you see, it pays to keep them wrapped until you're ready to absorb them)
This IS a hijack. everyone please remain calm...
