So, in the past month I've gotten 3 cds! 3! I never spend money on music b/c I just can't afford it. 2 of them were gifts, tho.
Donavon Frankenreiter - debut album - Donavon Frankenreiter
wow. this was also a birthday gift... got it yesterday and i've listened to it 4 times. it's a great feelin' good cd!
Yep, I really dig that CD as well...now you gotta get the new one - Move By Yourself. However, be warned, it's not all Jack Johnsonie... In fact it incorporates funk/R&B. The title track lays down a funky little groove remeniscient of early 70's disco, kind of Steely Dan-ish. It makes a great work out song. In other words, it's not an acoustic CD like the first one. Some of this disc has kind of a Josh Rouse - 1972 sound blended with Remy Shand's - The Way I Feel sound only not quite a smooth as either of those CDs. However, the first half of this CD would fit nicely on a compilation with Rouse and Shand. Probably my favorite track is called "Fool." It's a bluesy Steely Dan-ish number! I'm guessing you'll really dig Everytime. It's a nice little love song with some acoustic work and it's only a little over-produced...
Hmm, interesting that you would describe the music as Steely Dan-ish and a little bit 70's, a little bit 70's yeah, but Steely Danish, I'd say no. I liked the earlier Steely Dan stuff myself, such as their music from around the Pretzel Logic era. However, my ears perked up here not because I am a fan of Frankenreiter (it may take me awhile to get into his music...I'll give it some time) but because I just received a CD today from the local radio station for which I'm a sponsor, and their CD of the month has also been described, in part, as reminiscent of Steely Dan. Read on.
Zero 7 "The Garden""
The Garden is an intriguing listen, showcasing the sophistication that makes
Zero 7 the STeen Dan of chillout--wry, intelligent lyrical observations, inteventive musicianship,k a detached sense of cool forged by the duo's heady blend of folk, jazz, '70's soul, and electronica.
The Garden is a wonderfully diverse collection of sounds and beats and songs.
Zero 7 continue to push vocal based elctronica towards adventurous places." -- commentary sent from my radio station
My 16 yr old son and I listened to some of the CD, and he informed me that "electronica" is not the same thing as "techno"; he states that techno is more dance music than electronica. May take a few spins in the CD player for me. So far, I'm not able to adapt 70's pop style funk now turned electronica into something meaningful enough that I want to hear it more than once. But, I'll give it another listen to. Somehow, I find this style of music boring.

I definitely hear Steely Dan in the songs I mentioned. But just for those keeping score at home, I didn't say the whole CD was Steely Dan-ish merely some of the songs. I also pointed out that there were songs like Josh Rouse and Remy Shand. However the main point is that this is NOT and acoustic CD like Donavon's first CD which if I remember correctly was completely acoustical and totally Jack Johnson-ish (he even sang on one or two songs...) I really like the first one and I like the groove on the new one, but hey, what can I say, I'm a groovy guy...
However, I don't do electronica all that often and never techno pop too 80's for me. I rarely do dance or disco, but sign me up for every funky groove you can find. Big Head Todd & the Monsters to Rufus or Steely Dan (Aja is one of my all time favs) to Remy Shand, Philospher Kings to Level 42 to Little Feat's Feel The Groove.

Foo Fighters: One by One, Foo Fighters: Foo Fighters - liking them both a lot, a whole lot of energy there ~
J. R. Monterose - jazz music recorded in 1956....oh, I just can't keep this one out of my car CD player for very long! I am completely soaked into this CD. Jazz at its finest as far as I'm concerned. If I get brave and take this CD out of my car sometime, perhaps I will be lucky enough to find another jazz CD in the ballpark. This is soooooooooooo good. I liked it well the lst time through, and every subsequent playing I like it even more because I know it more. Wow, I'm so greatful for the recommendation!

Todd Snider's new cd, The Devil You Know, arrived in the mail today from Best Buy and it's great. I haven't quite made it throught the whole thing yet, but it might actually be better than his last, East Nashville Skyline (which would be quite an achievement). Between The Devil You Know and Will Kimbrough's powerful Americanitis, I think these two cds pretty much sum up the current state of the union.
A couple weeks back, we saw Greg Trooper and Diana Jones at Moonlight Music Cafe, in Birmingham. We picked up Greg's 2001 live cd, Between Home and a Hard Place, and Diana's new cd, My Remembrance of You. This was the second time my wife and I had seen Greg (we saw him open for Richard Thompson, last summer, in Nashville) and the second time all of us had seen Diana (she opened for Pierce Pettis at Moonlight, last fall).
If you love roots music, you're probably familiar with Greg already, but if you're not, do yourself a favor and check him out. He's been writing great country/folk/rock/soul music for about fifteen years, releasing eight cds in all. If you can get your hands on a copy of Popular Demons (1998), do it! It was produced by Buddy Miller, who also performs on it, as well (Julie, too). His 2005 cd, Make It Throught This World, was produced by Dan Penn. I mean, how much more persuasion do you need, anyway?
Diana Jones, on the other hand, is another story. If you're a fan of Iris Dement or Gillian Welch (and I am), you'll love Diana! Diana's music is actually more authentic and traditional than Iris or Gillian, though. Her family roots are from the East Tennessee hills. Her new cd, My Remembrance of You, is a little brief, but it is fantastic! If you can listen to Pony and not be moved by it, then you must have a heart of stone.
The sad news is that Moonlight Music is closing in September! Apparently, they have not been able to consistently draw crowds for the folks they've been booking (and they've been booking folks like Lucy Kaplansky, Dave Olney, etc.). For example, the crowd for Greg & Diana's show was only a couple dozen people! They both played like it was a full house. What an unfortunate thing for us music fans in Alabama. Come on, people! Is football the only thing you folks think about, around here? (Sorry, rant over.)

all the above for less than 5.00 plus
The Year Zero- Oceania, I will Return- wonderful dream pop/shoegaze (female vocals of course)
Red Eyed- a new compilation of Mpls Shoegaze/Dream Pop 1992-1998 (has a bunch of stuff I have only on vinyl)

Aug 15 2006, 11:51 AM
As I do much of my listening on
uber-nerd headphones, I'm big on upgrades and remasters and such, since digital mastering technology has come a long way since albums were first issued on CD in the 80's.
So I've been trading away some of my old CD's that have been recently re-released on
LaLa...old Airplane, Stones, Dylan, Rush, Depeche Mode, etc...and getting some cool stuff in return:
John Wetton - Battle Lines
Steve Lukather - Candyman
Peter Gabriel - Long Walk Home
Ty Tabor - Moonflower Lane
Silverchair - Diorama (just for you, Dan)
Paul Gilbert - King Of Clubs
Jeff Scott Soto - Lost In The Translation
Rachael Yamagata - Happenstance
Lucinda Williams - Car Wheels On A Gravel Road
A Perfect Circle - Mer De Noms
Morcheeba - Fragments Of Freedom
Maybe I'm taking advantage of the fact that their site does not yet account for different versions of an album (it even says so right in their FAQ), but hey...I'm getting new CD's out of it.

LaLa is cool... I just can't seem to get into it, yet, though... maybe when my bevy of unwanted titles that aren't selling for me on Amazon or Half.com goes down, I'll list 'em on LaLa and we'll see...

There are some "decent" tracks on
Frogstomp, but overall.. I hear ya... their 2nd album,
Freak, was a step in the right direction, but still fairly less than what they've grown into...
Diorama and
Neon Ballroom are the only two real mature releases of theirs...
Neon Ballroom is what piqued my interest in Silverchair. Outside of the lead-off single ("Anthem for the Year 2000"... blech), it's a SOLID album. "Steam Will Rise" and "Emotion Sickness" are fantastic songs...

And for the Biblical interpretation...
So and more also do God unto the enemies of David, if I leave of all that pertain to him by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall. I Samuel 25:22 KJV

You'll notice that I hardly ever enter the conversation in this thread, mostly because my stream of piss would be so overwhelming, it would be like torrential rains that wash away the little bitty squirt guns that others here fire at each other... If you are actually able to OPEN and LISTEN to EVERY CD you are buying, well my friend...you and I are just at very different levels of OCD. There just aren't enough hours in the day for me to be able to even open all the CDs I buy, much less listen to. but don't worry, I will stay out of your trite little "peeing contest" to see who buys the most CDs. I wouldn't want to make anyone feel so obviously inferior... Plus, I agree with Pico. I hate it when people brag too.

so are there any good CD stores in Cincy when i go there for CST?, Dayton?
Dayton:
Gem City Music in the
Oregon District (5th Street) -- walkable from CST
Second Time Around is a little bit further from Canal Street, but they have a pretty decent selection of used cds (and dvds, although I think their used dvd prices are a little high). I used to buy used lp's there when I was going to the university across the street.
I'll second Dan's Gem City recommendation, although I still have a little grudge with them ever since they closed the Town & Country store in Kettering years ago.

They ran
Woodstock on VH1 Classic last night...I have it on DVD but I hadn't actually seen it in awhile, and I watched Joe Cocker's version of "With A Little Help From My Friends," which compelled me to go to yourmusic.com and order the deluxe edition of
Mad Dogs & Englishmen, and album I've heard much about but never actually heard. I'm looking forward to it.

Brook, I appreciate the nod, but that's not what I meant. I was trying to say what some folks here perceive as bragging isn't really bragging. Like Carrie posted, I feel people post our purchases (and in another thread, what we're listening to) to give others ideas of music to check out.
Some other summer purchases I did not mention before:
Pink Floyd -
Wih You Were Here and
Animals (finally have them in CD format)
Bob Dylan - remastered
Highway 61 Revisited (a steal on sale at Best Buy)
Ray Lamontagne -

OK then. Yesterday I went out and bought an entire music store, and now I call dibs on every CD out there.

I never could get all the way through "Momentary Lapse," but good luck to ya.

The live disc of Ummagumma is killer though.

Momentary Lapse definitely has it's bits. . .but if I'm in a good 'floyd mood' for lack of non-incriminating term, I can make it through ok.

plus these two were nice additions, to sort of bookend what collection of Floyd I already have. And I didn't pay anything. . . .So it was kind of hard to pass up.

Fair enough. I have all the Floyd albums in mp3 still from the Napster days (believe it or not)...there's been a few reissues over the years, mostly of "The Wall" and "Dark Side," but I figure as soon as I start buying the Floyd albums I really want on CD (Meddle, Obscured, Piper, etc), the record company will have a "nth anniversary uber-deluxe-remastered by god edition," so I'm still waiting. The CD editions of those "other" Floyd albums have been out for over 15 years, and they realyl don't do justice to how good those recordings were.
I was going to pick up the 30th Anniversary "Dark Side" CD that came out a couple years ago, but I've heard kind of mixed things about the sound of it, so I held off.

Oddly enough, I don't remember. Lemme think.
Wow... I honestly don't know. Jen has bought some great stuff (which I've conveniently ripped) and I've been blessed to have some great, amazing music sent to me.
Suffice it to say I've been on a Patty Griffin bender for about three or four months.
