gosh, last year at an old restored theatre downtown i saw holiday with katharine hepburn and cary grant. i'd never even heard of it before, but it was excellent!! really wonderful - jumped into my top ten list. now i can't find it for purchase - it certainly isn't on dvd. if you can find it, it's a *definite* winner!
d.
my fave fun classic films always involve jimmy stewart.
digitalpentad
ditto on Jimmy Stewart. He had whatever that "it" is in all kinds of movies—a genuinely great guy. And since childhood I have loved his prayer in Shenandoah when he instructs the Almighty in all the work they put in to the land and the crops that put food on the table and then says "but we thank you anyway."

My favorite classics are The Manchurian Candidate, Citizen Kane, The Trial, and a lot of Hitchcock: Psycho, Rope, Lifeboat, etc.

I also enjoy a few of the old westerns, Shane probably being my favorite.

And to follow the trend, I've actually never seen a Jimmy Stewart movie that I didn't enjoy. He must have just been one hell of an actor. smile.gif
katherine
the umbrellas of cherbourg. oh my goodness, what a lovely movie. they just released it on dvd, and it has been gorgeously restored.
Lynne
It's a Wonderful Life

Didn't see this 'til my senior year of college, at which time I'd heard many of my friends rave about it.

Sometimes, movies don't live up to the hype. This one did. Does. Every time.

It's the kind of film that gives you hope.

lilblueriver, i love this film, too! i'm a big hepburn fan and none of my other friends have seen this one, so i have been unable to commisserate with anyone on its greatness so far... but isn't it great?? smile.gif and have you checked half.com? i had some luck finding it there before. pricey, but available.

also, ditto on jimmy s. he just rocks.

"the women" and "it happened one night" are also fun...

and i love fred & ginger, goofy as that might be. the dancing is mind-boggling, and the costumes are amazing... my two faves of theirs are "follow the fleet" and the classic "top hat".
my only question is, when will someone get wise and do a classic-movies drive-in???

mandy, this perhaps explains a thing or two about you and your brother....
(no, i really have no idea what i mean by that, i just wanted to give you a hard time rolleyes.gif ) much love from your orchard ghost

i've always wondered about "stage door"--but really, how could a movie go wrong with katherine hepburn, lucille ball, AND ginger rogers?? good to know someone i trust recommends--i'll have to check it out...

and lilblueriver, the acrobatics that occur during that movie astound me. confound me. cary grant doing flips all over the place. katherine hepburn giving the ol' "money=valuable life" misinformation the what-for. gotta love it...
