So, the other night I indulged myself with a night at the cinema where I saw "Kill Bill: Volume 1. I'm wondering what everyone else thinks of it.
Personally, while it was the most bloody movie I've seen since Braveheart, I thought it was one of the best films I've seen this year.
And, despite the severed arms and legs, decapitations, and ecetera, I do not believe the violence was necessarily gratiuitous. And notice how Uma Thurman's charachter never spills innocent blood? (Oh sure, she spanked that one kid with her sword, but she could have killed him). I thought that was an interesting juxstaposition on what she said earler to the African American woman she kills. Something about she has no mercy. It seems that, perhaps she does have some mercy, just not for those who slaughtered the nine (er, 8) people.

I saw Kill Bill last week.
I thought it was great.
I loved the scene in the courtyard with the snow falling.
And the animated scene.
I can't wait for Vol II.

I absolutely loved Kill Bill. Uma was the kickest of asses, IMO. I think I let out a *gasp* when they chose to end it where they did. My buddy and I want to eat a 'maui wowee' cookie or two and see it again, which would be so f'in great since few movies make me want to do that. And Like Dave said, I can't wait for VOL. II...
I also loved the courtyard/snow falling scene, the fight w/ The Bride and GoGo, and the opening scene was so, "Yeah.. this is gonna be a goody..."-ish. loved it loved it loved it.

Well, I'd avoided this movie in the theatres 'cause I don't typically do well with violent films, but I watched this last night on DVD and I really liked it in spite of myself. Very cool visually, great use of music (although I can't get that whistling song out of my head . . .) and amazing action sequences. Uma Thurman is amazing!
I guess I have an affinity for movies in which women kick ass.

Now I'm looking forward to Vol. 2. Tarantino's interview in Entertainment Weekly (which was good, btw) painted the second film as less violent and focusing more on the plot (and the love story b/t the bride and Bill). Crazay. Can't wait.

On the one hand, it was absurdly, intentionally violent. On the other hand, if you understand the context of it, and can separate it from real-life violence, it really becomes more about the choreography and acrobatics and beauty of the fight scenes. From what I'm seen of Mel Gibson's flick, I'd be much more annoyed and disturbed with the violence in that movie than I'd ever be from a Tarentino movie.
I can't wait for part 2.
Also, if you go to Best Buy tomorrow, you can get Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Reservoir Dogs on DVD for 20 bucks.

Eh--apples and oranges, IMO. I've seen both, and liked both for vastly different reasons. Gibson was going for realistic violence, and Tarantino wasn't. Both are disturbing in different ways, depending on variables like your stomach for such stuff and your feelings re: Jesus.
One thing for sure, lil' chillens should not be viewing either one . . .

Not much to the special features on the Kill Bill DVD, just music videos from the 5-6-7-8's and a 'making-of' feature-ette (which had some interesting stuff). I'm guessing they're saving the good stuff for the Vol. 1 & 2 bundle . . .

Well yeah, but it does feel like a bit of a double standard. People have complained about violence in TV/movies for decades, but no one's really complaining about it if the movie happens to be about jesus.
I just wonder if someone had taken the same basic plot and directed it the same way, but called the main character Brian if people would have been up in arms about it's violent content. Just something I was thinking about.

Am I the only person who thought that the movie was aweful. I think it obviously had an unnecesary amount of bloodshed. The plot was as shallow as my frying pan. It was terrible.
WalrusOct9
Apr 13 2004, 09:19 AM
it was too bloody, but...you can't take it seriously. you have to realize that it was meant to be an homage to old martial arts and samaurai flicks, and that Tarentino is just a really weird guy. It wasn't a huge, complicated plot because it didn't need to be...there's plenty of movies for that. Sometimes I want to watch something really deep and thoughtful like Amelie or Waking Life, other times I just want to be entertained and see something not as serious.
I dunno, i was a little put off by how violent it was, but the movie was still really entertaining, and the action sequences were absolutely stunning from a visual and choreography standpoint. It had enough plot to keep it moving...at least enough to make me want to see the second part. I'm not sure it's fair to weigh in until we've seen the whole thing the way the director intended it to be. But like all of his movies, it's definately not for everyone.

Oh my God, I laughed my ass off through the entire movie. I have always loved Tarantino, but I really think he outdid himself this time. It was the most beautiful spoof of a movie genre that I've seen.
Yes, it was gory, but in a very funny way. Uma looked like she had fun, fun, fun doing this movie.
Did anyone check out the 'making of'? Lots of good insight there.
I loved how QT merged so many different elements such as b&w, anime and color. The music was wonderful and I LOVED the 5.6.7.8's! How cool were they?

I saw Vol. 2 last night!!! Sooooooo good. Grood, in fact. Great and good.
I loved it. I actually had a hard time winding down afterwards, couldn't get to sleep because I was still thinking about it. Man. I only have one complaint, which isn't actually a real complaint--I was slightly distracted throughout because I kept thinking about what Uma Thurman had to endure to make this film . . . dang. I can't even imagine the training.
And this is Daryl Hannah's best movie since . . . Steel Magnolias? Has she made a film since then? I don't know. But she was great. Everyone was great. I'll hit 'add reply' now so I don't keep on gushing--

I doubt I will ever see Vol II, as Vol I was so wretched in my book. It just reeked of self-indulgence. The folks that like it just remind me of The Emporer's New Clothes.. The plot was so boring, the humor was non existent, Uma's feet are disgusting (and I hear there's even more feet in Vol II). Half of the music grated on me. It just reminded me of what Mortal Kombat will be like in six years. Very beautifully filmed, but not for me. Just too dumb.

We were talking in chat the other night about a kill bill 3 in about 15 years, but I didn't have any details. From CNN:
'Tarantino has thought about doing a "Kill Bill" sequel in about 15 years, when the Bride's daughter and the daughter of Fox's character both would be about 20. Fox's daughter witnesses her mother's death at the hands of the Bride in "Vol. 1," and Thurman tells the young girl to feel free to come looking for her after she grows up.
"Uma laid down the challenge, and she deserves her revenge as much as Uma did," Tarantino said.
More immediately, Tarantino plans to film "Inglorious Bastards," a mammoth World War II tale. He said he might slip in a smaller-scale movie project before that, though.'
