I'm sure this topic has been mentioned before (I might have been the one to mention it even), but I can't find any record of it. Maybe it has gone where old threads go to die.

Anyways, my latest itunes playlist involves literary allusions in music. I'm being fairly liberal in my selections, but one thing's for certain: I've got to like the song! tongue.gif
Anyways, I'm looking for any suggestions. so anyone have any suggestions?

Here's a little sample of some of the songs I've chosen and why:

Hallelujah - Leanord Cohen (though I also put the amazing Rufus Wainwright version on as well). Biblical allusions galore!
Wuthering Heights - Kate Bush. Retelling of the book by the same name.
Le Pastie de la bourgeoisie - Belle and Sebastian. Mentions Catcher in the Rye AND Keroac (On the Road).
Killing an Arab - The Cure. Self explanatory
Poor Fractured Atlas - Elvis Costello. Greek Mythology baby! Thankfully its not a reference to Ayn Rand, lol.
White Rabit - Jefferson Airplane. Alice in wonderland references.
The Mariner's revenge song - The Decemberists. Heavily influenced by nautical literature.
Field of Flowers - Sixpence none the richer. "I wish to quote from Whitman."
Shakespeare's Sister - The Smiths. Hello, Virginia Wolf reference!
Turn, Turn, turn - the Byrds (as well as the Chagall Guevara cover) - Ecclesiastes.
Ghost World - Aimee Mann. Daniel Clowes reference
Hey Pretty (extended version) - Poe. Her brother quotes his own book throughout the song.
The end of the world - U2. Biblical allusion - from the perspective of Judas.

Ok, I could go on, and on, and on, and on. But I won't. Well, anyone have any suggestions? I suppose I could put the entire album "Till we have faces" on the list, eh?

I'm pretty stoked myself, though I'm trying to curb my enthusiasm a little bit because of the fact that I might just happen to be working the night they swing into Portland - which would royally, royally suck. There's a slight, slight, slight chance I might hit the first show in Seattle though. Depends on a) do I get to go to the show in Portland cool.gif am I working c) can I spare the cash for a train ticket and d) can I stay with some friends of mine up there.

Anyone else just as stoked about this as I am? I have my DVR set to record it and shall watch at least two of the episodes later on tonight.

Wait, wait, am I seeing this correctly? is there NOT an olympics thread? the hell? Or am I making a total jackass out of myself totally missing a thread (I did look, but I've got a bit of heat exhaustion, so maybe I missed it).

Last night I was in a restaurant downtown, and could see into the bar where they had the Olympics on the wide screen. The entire restaurant cheered when Micheal Phelps won his eighth gold medal - even the half that couldn't even see the screen. It was just - everyone knew what had just happened. I don't think I could put into words the feeling of that moment. I guess that's why I love the Olympics so much. Its a time to put away our differences and come together. I think its interesting how the Summer olympics land on the same year as the presidential election (in the US at least). Its kind of a calming before the storm I guess. WE're not Republicans or Democrats, we are Americans. We are cheering for the same side. And even if our side looses, we are ok with that (well, unless you're that crybaby from Sweeden who got the bronze).

Ok, thread officailly started!

I'm in the market for a new bike - well A bike. Its great excercise, it costs NO gas, and its just a great way to get around. Besides, my city is pretty much heading towards being a biking utopia - there's even talk about making every other street downtown a bike only street (though I don't think the PBA would really allow that, but I won't get into that). So yeah, combined with an excelent public transportation system, the rising cost of gas, and the enviromental impact of cars it doesn't make sense to drive at all here.

Anyways, I'm curious, for those of you who choose to transport yourself via peddle power - why do you do it? How often do you do it? What do you like about your bike? Yes, just talk about your biking experiences.

Can't wait till I get to ride in the pouring rain. I'm nuts like that.
