OMG what a weekend! That was the bestest birthday one could have. The shows: awesomesauce. The company: indescribable. The parties: rocking. The music: even better then it's ever been.

I would call out to all you peeps that made my weekend, but invariably I would miss one or two and well I'd be pissed at myself. So you know who you are - and dammit please keep in touch cuz for many of you I haven't seen you in ten years. I think Bruce-y's got it right... come crash my pad in Columbus! biggrin.gif Let's see if we can make my roomie think my friends are even more nutty. lol

I still don't have a voice - but f-it... I had a blast and that's what matters. Now, none of you better "huh" me here.. I know you can see my type perfectly fine! tongue.gif

And I sooo wish Alyssa and I could have been able to come to St. E's... but the drive was long enough. I slept 14.5 hours last night to make up for the 12 hours I got in the prior three days combined.

T'was great to meet you, Heather!

Hey BklynFred, I didn't say hello or anything- but I was sitting directly to your left today. smile.gif

Jeeze, how creepy did that sound? laugh.gif I was just there for the show, the cheese and the waffles, I swear.

Not creepy at all my friend! Except, you knew who I was and still didn't say hello? Okay, maybe a tad creepy.

Sorry to have given you my back the entire time ... it was Abby's first concert and the three things she did most were talk, kick poor Rebecca, and twirl my video camera around like a pack of gum!

Say hi next time or I'll be forced to call you "bastid" ... trust me, you wouldn't be the first!

Next time I'll say hello! I'm a bit shy, especially with my noobliness. I figure next year I'll join in on the forum festivities.

Got back to Atlanta today after a great weekend of Over the Rhine music. How awesome was it that the band played like 6.5 hours of concerts over three days and only repeated 2 or 3 songs?

Anyway, I've uploaded a few pics from the weekend (including some OTR shots) here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/vapspwi/sets/72157611471006999/ My seats were a long way from the stage, but I got a few decent shots.

I added them to the Over the Rhine Flickr group, if you want to go there instead: http://www.flickr.com/groups/overtherhineconcerts/

I'm finally back home now. Have very little to add to what's already been shared. In every aspect, this weekend exceeded my expectations. Two massive shows and a Sunday event which turned into a quasi third show. Of all the hours of playing, I am amazed only three songs were played twice. I know the Larson sisters would have loved to have experienced Paul and Virginia live (twice even). Talk about giving an old song new life!

So grateful for the hospitality of peeps here. Special thanks to Brookd for helping us out in the wee hours of night, and making one helluva funny car ride. Thanks again to Bill and Fred. It was really special to meet so many people for the first time this weekend, and to get re-acquainted with others. GREAT people, great music and great memories. biggrin.gif

I have held off on commenting on the board, as I just can't find words to match the euphoria that I'm still coming down from after this weekend. Well, two weekends--in a sense--for me after seeing them twice in Louisville the week before and the amazingly touching and wonderful thing k&l did for my wife. i didn't know how to compare those events to this weekend...so i've just decided to think of it all as one continuous amazing event.

I don't even know where to really start, other than to first thank Karin and Linford for everything. I was reminded more than once this weekend why we all love this band, and why we all agree that they are such a treasure when it comes to music.

And I know I've said it a few times, but thank you k&l for what you did for sarah. thanks for being a part of our journey.

(sidenote: sarah may think the apples are "freaks" but when I got home last night, I discovered she has been "lurking" on the board over the weekend...and told me she's thinking it'd be nice to come to taft next year! gonna make her an apple yet!! happy.gif )

thank you for making this happen. thank you for working so hard to make this weekend happen. Thank you for keeping at it for 20 years. I'm still blown away.

Thanks, too, goes along to Brian, Ric, Mickey, Jake, Kenny, Nick, Kim, Julie, Juicy, Mike, all the crew, and everyone behind the scenes for adding to the perfection of the weekend.

To Bill: thanks for all your planning, and thanks for letting me get involved. I had a blast--even when helping arrange the 30 dozen roses at your house! Book my spot for next year.

To Bruce: Dude, you amaze me. No one...NO ONE...can sing Britney Spears like you! Thanks for introducing us to Bobby Mackey's and to Tostadas. Next time, I promise I'll kick it karaoke style!

To all the Apples I met this weekend: Wasn't this awesome!? It was such a pleasure seeing some Apples again, and to meet many others that I've only met online or have seen on the board. I'm continually amazed at how diverse and varied we are, yet share a kindred spirit thanks to this band and its music. K&L made this an amazing show weekend, but spending time with the apples really is what makes this such a special time. I'm so glad to be in this orchard.

Hangin' on to this high as long as I can,
Patrick

Actually, I think BPD came AFTER Professional Daydreamer.

I noticed K&L talking after singing Ohio, as if maybe they started the set incorrectly, and they decided to plug BPD in after PD.

Could be wrong, but I think it was just a little unplanned "rearrangement" of the set list.

I'm fairly sure it was that way too.

Holy smokes those both are perfect songs, IMO. And for whatever reason it seemed like they'd only play one or the other on any night back in the day when they played more Ohio songs.

It was wonderful to see everyone again, and meet some new folk as well on Friday. I would've loved to have been able to stay the whole weekend but unfortunately it wasn't really an option tonight, but I made it there when it counted.

Friday was something I'd waited for since I first discovered the Eve and Patience albums years ago. My first show was in 2000, and I'd kind of just accepted OTR as what they've been for the last ten years or so, and loved it, but in the back of my mind, there was always that sense of wondering what they were like as a real rock band...a band of four creative equals, versus K&L and their hired guns. It's hard to compare, they really are two different bands, although I suppose it would've felt more natural if I'd been around for the 'transitional' years of 1997-99 or so.

I was excited, but I was trying not to set my expectations too high, between some comments I'd read here and the fact that OTR had all but abandoned their early catalog in recent years, save for a handful of GDBD songs. I had no idea how much Ric and Brian would play, and figured they'd stick to the safe selections; songs like "Birds" and "Circle Of Quiet" that were the closest musically to where OTR has gone in their later career, because they'd be the easiest for Karin to slip back into (not to mention easier to rehearse on short notice). Mostly though, I wondered whether the intensity would be there, whether K&L would enjoy revisiting this stuff from so long ago, and whether the emotions and issues that split them up would go by the wayside for a night to produce something truly magical again. I knew I'd enjoy it, no matter what, but we've all seen OTR enough times to be able to see when things are truly clicking and when they're not.

And within about two minutes of "Eyes Wide Open," all my skepticism vanished, and when they launched into "How Does It Feel," I cracked a huge smile knowing they wouldn't be playing it safe as I thought they might have. Ric was every bit the guitar hero I imagined him to be...he started out a little tentative, but by the HDIF reprise, he sounded exactly how he was supposed to sound. "Guilty Bystander" and "Daddy Untwisted," neither my favorite song on record, were the highlights of the first set, rocking in a way the band hadn't since the breakup. Ric was absolutely on fire for "Daddy," extending the song considerably without ever getting boring or running out of ideas. I always loved Brian's drumming, but had a new appreciation for it, and what it added to the band, after watching him play live. I know a lot of people are partial to Mickey, who himself is a fantastic drummer, but where Mickey plays with the finesse of a jazz-trained drummer, Brian just freaking grooved the entire night in his own inimitable way. A truly wonderful thing to behold.

The second set was a bit odd, simply because the energy level was so high during the first set...I don't know if they'd spent more time rehearsing the earlier stuff, but the GDBD stuff didn't quite come together as well as the earlier material ("All I Need Is Everything" seemed to be very tentative, for whatever reason), but even the overlooked "Gospel Number" had some new life breathed into it, and everyone's favorite "Poughkeepsie" sounded better than it ever had thanks to Julie and Kim's harmonies. I was kind of surprised they didn't do more from GDBD, since they've played so many of the songs live even in recent years. Also surprised "Poughkeepsie" wasn't dedicated to Bruce. laugh.gif But "I'm I'm Drowning," while a bit of an awkward transition setlist-wise, was stunning...maybe not as good as the Besides live version, but who cares? The sheer fact it was being played by those four people right in front of us was miracle enough. They had Karin's early-90's synth set up on the side of the stage, but she chose to sing it from Linford's seat...not sure why.

"I Painted My Name" might've been the high point of the set though...perfectly played, and one of those songs I knew but had never really clicked with me until that moment. A ragged but fun Nick Lowe cover capped off an amazing night that I never in a million years thought I'd see. So thanks to Karin, Linford, Ric, and Brian for indulging us, not only in some nostagia for the old-timers, but for giving the fans you've made in the past ten years a chance to step into a time machine for two hours and experience something truly magical that we had never thought was possible.

Thanks to everyone at the show on Fri, old and new...Keith, Jeanne, SoCal, Heather, Stefanie, Kent, Kylie, Stiv, Patrick, everyone...thanks to Zayne for the company on the ride up, Fred for the couch and great 4 AM conversation, Pico for being a part of all of it, Bruce for making even the shittiest bar in a 100 mile radius fun, and everyone for the good times at...um, whatever that place was called that served me biscuits and gravy at 2 AM. Good times...kind of bummed I missed out on Sat. and Sunday, but at the same time, I'm not sure anything could've topped what I saw happen on Friday night. Thanks to everyone who made it happen...band, fans, and friends. You couldn't ask for a better time.

Wow... As everyone has already stated, that was just an unbelievable weekend. Can't tell you all how pleased I was to be able to spend it with you good folks. Looks like the highlights have already been covered pretty thoroughly, so I won't bother with a recap.

Just want to say thanks to everyone I was able to spend time with, y'all are great fun whatever time of day I seem to encounter you. I just wish there'd been more time to talk with those of you I only got to say the briefest of hellos to and those I didn't get to meet at all. I hope to see you all again soon and that it won't be another 4+ years before I get back to Ohio again.
