Okay, so I've selected my song for the wedding intro. It's the Cowboy Junkies version of Let Me Call You Sweetheart. Jake gets to pick the outro, and he hasn't decided yet.

But we're building a playlist for the reception. I want to start with either Trouble, or I'm on a Roll from the new album (and end with Let's Spend the Day in Bed). Please vote for your favorite.

I've also got a lot of space in between, so feel free to throw out suggestions, OtR or otherwise.

Congrats on your pending nuptials!

The Junkies “Anniversary Song” is always great. My other favorite wedding reception songs include, “You’ve got a friend in me” off the Toy Story soundtrack; “Where’ve you been” by Kathy Mattea; “Brass in pocket” by The Pretenders; “Hello it’s me” by Todd Rundgren; “Follow you, follow me” by Genesis.

Take care,

John V

I've always really liked Ben Folds' "The Luckiest" and Fisher's "I Will Love You" as wedding-type songs. And there's always good old "Rhapsodie."

But for a reception, you probably want to get people up and dancing at some point, in which case your options are wide open. I'd consider including a nice chunk of Motown music, some Beatles tracks, and some '70s funk, along with more recent danceable stuff by artists like Amy Winehouse and Spoon.

I'm still sooo excited for you, Annna! biggrin.gif

Awesome, thanks for the suggestions. We are looking for a more upbeat reception soundtrack, so I've included some Beatles and have added Anniversary Song per h&r's suggestion. I forgot about that one! Anyway, that's why I wanted to start with one of those two songs, because they're both really playful and jazzy.

Thanks Becky & John. We're down to 30 days. I'm really sweating it now!

You want upbeat? How about Emmy Lou's version of (You Never Can Tell) C'est La Vie from her Anthology collection? It's a lot of fun and would be a great dance tune. I can see you cuttin' the rug now.

Then there's:

The Poet Game - Greg Brown
Crazy On You - Heart
Times Like These - Jack Johnson
Something In the Way She Moves - James Taylor
I'm In the Mood - John Lee Hooker
Glory of True Love - John Prine
Moondance & Crazy Love - Van Morrison

These are just a few faves of mine. Check them out if you like.

Congrats again, babe.

I have a few suggestions for some songs that if I ever do get married and have any say in the matter-will be on my playlist for wedding music---all of which are a bit off the beaten musical path---

This first one--I would just have playing at some point---either before the nuptials or later at the reception--- I would play a version of Nancy Griffin's "Gulf Coast Highway" done by an all female group called Evangeline---this version is a duet with the lead singer of the group and Jimmy Buffet----as the appointed time to conduct the ceremony was to take place--I would first play a song done by Lyle Lovett from the second disc of "Step Inside This House" titled "If I Needed You"--all of the songs on that two disc set were done by people Lyle considered friends and musical mentors and as I recall--- this song was a Townes Van Zandt song--so ya can't go wrong there--the song is a male profession of undying love for his lady--its a short song---just over three minutes in length.

As a follow up to that song and the prelude to the vows I would play "This Is Love" by Mary Chapin Carpenter from her album, "Stones in the Road"

The song has lines that almost echo some in the Lyle song and whle it is a triffle long at almost seven minutes---it builds to a nice finish--when you think ithe song is over--there is a a short instrumental "outro" that when completed--a live musican playing a piano could start by playing a few notes of this section before breaking into "Here Comes the Bride"--

I guarantee you--there would not be a dry eye in the house and the two songs as a set piece would be a good send off for a marriage---

Just my thoughts on the subject!!!! LOL

I'd probably have to play "North Dakota" by Lyle at some point at welll---another sweet and beautiful love song from Lyle--maybe that's how he won Julia Roberts' heart-at least for a time!!!! Later during the partying part- of the day or night-- I'd sing a Karaoke version of Lyle's "She's No Lady" just for fun!!!!

I'm On a Roll.... I freaking LOVE that song. The first time I heard it I thought it should be on some sountrack. It'd be great to have it start off the soundtrack of your lives together Anna.
My $.02,
J

edit to add: You ARE going to invite anyone who chooses the winning song, right Anna?

You can't go wrong with VanMo. For a pretty ugly dude, he wrote some stunning love songs.

I suppose it's a bit cliched after Love Actually, but what about the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows"? IMO, still the most beautiful pop song ever written.

Thanks for all the suggestions and votes, apples. I was leaning toward I'm on a Roll as well.

For all you Beatles fans: There will be plenty of that, and I've placed my vote for Real Love (from the anthology) as the outro song for the wedding itself. I just love that song. (Regina Spektor's version was not so good, btw, for those fo you who recall that post)

By the way, you can listen to the intro song for the wedding here. Just click the arrow next to Let Me Call you Sweetheart to listen. The wedding party will walk out during the a cappella verse, and I'll walk on the second verse. Or that's how it's supposed to work, anyway.

Here's what I've collected for the playlist so far, though I'm still in the collecting phase.

I’m on a Roll, OtR
Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key, Billy Bragg and Wilco
Rose of Sharon, Eliza Gilkyson
Born, OtR (Live from Nowhere, Vol, I)
Anniversary Song, Cowboy Junkies
*But on the Other Hand Baby, Ray Charles
If You Were the Woman and I was the Man, Cowboy Junkies
Trouble, OtR
Something/ Blue Jay Way, Beatles (Love)
Hush Now (Tipsy Gypsy Mix), OtR
California Stars, Billy Bragg and Wilco
Little Wing, Derek & the Dominoes
Easy Silence, Dixie Chicks
Blue Moon Revisited, Cowboy Junkies
*Such Great Heights, Iron & Wine
Every Little thing She Does is Magic, The Police
*Fidelity, Regina Spektor
All You Need is Love, Beatles (Love)

*Tentative choices

Jake hasn't contributed much yet to this playlist (obviously), so it is incomplete. But I'd love to know what y'all think so far.

This is a great playlist... just yesterday, California Stars came up on our iTunes shuffle, and I remembered how fantastic a song it is.

How about...
Tambourine, Tift Merritt
Getting Some Fun Out of Life, Madeleine Peyroux
Something by Dinah Washington (I could write a book, what a difference a day makes...)
Soul Meets Body, Death Cab for Cutie
(You Never Can Tell) C'est La Vie, Emmylou Harris
Mushaboom, Feist
Accidentally Kelly Street, Frente
This Flower, Kasey Chambers
And then something kinda funky old school, maybe Motown. Staples Singers? Aretha Franklin? ...Christina Aguilera? (ducks)

LOL. Thanks, Katherine! It has been so good to see you posting again. You know, I actually have that Madeleine Peyroux, and I also have some Aretha. Great suggestions. I also have a CD Cher sent with some ideas, and Bill's got one for me too.

Looks like we'll end up running the playlist through a rented karaoke machine. Anyone have any experience with that?

If you're having Enchiladas at the reception, go for "On a Roll." But "Trouble" kicks its ass around any block at any time of the day otherwise.

Wow, that's an extensive list. I have Etta's version of At Last, but I'm kind of tired of it. I did consider it, though. I have a bunch of jazz stuff stored at my mom's house, which I need to retrieve. Project for this weekend, I guess. Or next. Yikes, we're down to 23 days!

Also, thanks, John!

Many thanks to Cher, who sent me a compilation, from which I yanked a couple for the playlist. I'll post an updated list in a day or two, after I have a chance to review your comp, Keith, select from it, and get Jake to add more of his stuff.

Thanks everyone!
