On the U2 livejournal community, someone came up with the idea of opening a gmail account where people can post (i.e. email) rare/live/unreleased songs for the rest of the community. The login and password is made public to members and so anyone in the community can go in and grab the tracks.

So it dawned on me that this might be a cool thing for the junkies of this music forum to do. Either on a "song a day" type basis, or just someplace to put songs you really like that you think everyone should hear. Just an idea I had at 2:30 AM...what do you guys think?

Okay, well I went ahead and created an account anyway. If the idea doesn't work, hey, it's free, right?

Anyways, info is as follows:

login: OrchardMusic
password: gooddog

Let's see where this goes.

My only suggested 'guideline', if you will, is that if you upload a file, please put it in the format of "artist - song title.mp3" so that we don't have random unidentified mp3's lying around. I already threw something up there, just to test this all out. I have no idea if gmail has some kind of transfer limit or what, but I guess we'll find out.

Cool idea Steve. We'll see how it works....

Any limitation on what gets put up there? Is it strictly for rare, unreleased stuff or just any cool song we like?

As far as I'm concerned, post anything you want. smile.gif I think gmail does have a 10 meg attachment limit, so if you wanted to post a whole album you'd have to do each track seperately.

I think this is a brilliant idea. The problem though is I have no idea what to select as my first contribution...

Actually, Trudes, if you're sending a song, you just email the MP3 attachment to "orchardmusic@gmail.com".

And if you're retreiving music, just go to www.gmail.com and logon to the account using the name and password that Steve posted above.

Cool?

I had trouble getting my contribution to send this morning. I tried to attach a 3.6 MB MP3 to both a G-Mail & a Hotmail message to mail, and both gave me the dreaded "This Document Contains No Data" message.

I'll try again tonight.

Is everyone cool with Apples MP4 format? I guess I could convert it over to MP3, but I'm not sure how to convert just one song...

Working on it.

Yeah, go Apple...let's make a format that's not compatible with anything you don't make. Way to go guys. dry.gif

(not directed at you, just directed at the company)

I think there's a thing on Itunes where you can right-click on a song and there's a menu item to convert it to mp3 (or some other format of your choosing). You can upload whatever you want, no one's going to stop you, but I'd like to keep it as much in mp3 as possible since everything plays that, and if someone wants it in .ogg or .wma or m4a (or whatever their weird format is), they can do that themselves. But I know not everyone here uses the same software or is as computer savvy as others and may not know how to convert or may not use apple software.

Whoa, that was longer than it needed to be, sorry...Apple just makes me want to
