echolyn (pronounced echo-lynn) is one of those few prog bands that actually made some brilliant long-lasting music, IMO. I like prog, but most of the bands (with the rare exception of Porcupine Tree, some King Crimson, and Kevin Moore-era Dream Theater) are primarily mindless virtuosity with no real heart. echolyn is one of those prog bands with heart... and their style is more reminiscent of Kansas and... um... some say Gentle Giant (though I know not of their sound). echolyn is lush keyboards, retro guitars, and harmonized vocal melodies. They meander, they bloom, they yearn. I really like them.

Their second record, Suffocating the Bloom, and their third full-length record, As the World, are two brilliant albums that I'd say rank easily in my Top 100 of All-Time... mind you, Best 100 is an accomplishment compared to my walls of music... especially for a bearded prog band from Pennsylvania to have two of such albums heralded.

Anyway, shortly after echolyn signed with Sony... um... they were doomed. Big labels know not how to support a prog band, and they also know not how to treat a band in general (ie- not releasing master tapes from their vaults, yet showing no interest in releasing the music themselves). This Sony debuted record, As the World, is now being re-issued independently. It's been hard-to-find (allegedly) for a bit now... though, admitedly, I've bought three copies over the past 10 years, while never really intensely "searching for it."

Anyway, it's a beautiful record. It's cohesive and stunningly well produced. And the re-issue has a bonus DVD from a concert around the time of release of the album in 1995. It can be procured from either Radiant Records or CD Baby (the next best thing to getting it directly from the band).

I have no connection to echolyn, CD Baby, or Radiant Records. I just like what they do.

pimping of the music... it's my duty...

Old news, I've been raving about these guys for a few years now. wink.gif

I do second the notion that this album is absolutely stunning, although I'm annoyed that I'll have to buy it again just to get the DVD. (can't they sell the DVD seperately? Oy vey...)

(incidentally, when I was in high school, we played at the Ritz like a week before it shut down...by that point it was called something else, but we were there...I wonder if it looks as much like a dump on video as it did in person laugh.gif )

tongue.gif I have too - since 1995 (got into them about a millisecond after Dream Theater and winded up buying As the World at Best Buy of all places)... however, the re-issue is not old news, silly... tongue.gif

It is a bummer for them not selling the DVD separately, but alas, it all helps out the band. Plus they have the Stars and Gardens 2-DVD that's separate...

wow... echolyn, who was once thought by me to be broken up, has a new album out on Radiant Records... yay!

Echolyn - The End is Beautiful

The new Echolyn album, The End is Beautiful, is now available and in stock! This 8-song tour de force begins a new chapter in Echolyn history. All the dynamics of what make this band so unique are here. The album was written mainly around driving rhythms laid down by drummer Paul Ramsey and cut live in the studio giving the songs an apparent extra dose of power. Blaring organ leads, acrobatic guitar melodies, a horn section and multi-part harmonies also abound on The End is Beautiful. This album also marks the return of bass player Tom Hyatt as a full-time member!
