so, the new Paste Magazine (with Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic on the cover) has a tag saying "FREE DVD INSIDE." There's even a page saying what's on the "Free DVD," and the question "want a DVD with every issue? Be sure to subscribe."

Um... my subscription Paste "We get it at least half right" Magazine arrived yesterday... in its plasticwrap... no DVD.

WTF? I wouldn't have minded, had they not gone to all of that trouble telling me what I've apparently missed...

Based on Paste's track record... um... don't count on it.

I got mine and the DVD and the CD was inside.
They just don't like you, Dan.

Yeah... I like Paste and all, but I didn't bother renewing my subscriptiong. One of my magazines got skipped somehow (though they sent it to me with the next issue, after I complained), another one was missing pages, quite mysteriously (again, they replaced it), and my CD was broken in my final issue (which they replaced, as well, but the replacement was broken too). It's just too much trouble! Wish I could have seen the DVD, though....

I think I may be the only one on the face of the OtR and Bill Mallonee listserves/messageboards that have always been pleased as punch with paste. They have always come through for me, and quickly..... ::shrugs:: I figured it was just because I never told them that I knew Dan through the boards though...

Barry,
You're not alone.
I have always had good service and prompt and polite responses to communication.
Personal emails from Jason (I think that was his name) when I had a question were prompt and helpful. All the merchandise I have ordered has arrived timely and correct.
I have 'e-chatted' briefly with Jay Sweet..one of the writers for Paste about the article he wrote about the Cowboy Junkies. Pleasant and personable guy.
Paste seems to me to be a stuggling small magazine focusing on non-mainstream bands....they get a lot of info in every issue I think. The free CD and now the DVD with each issue seems to be an honest and generous effort to attract a clientele.
To me I think I'm getting a lot for my subscription.

~15 orders with Paste... 10 of them without a hitch. The other 5, something minor happened. I still order through them. Mainly because they carry a lot of stuff.

Their magazine is kinda weak, though.

And one of the guys is an asshole. I don't know which one. But he is.

Do you really think the magazine is weak? Interesting....I hadn't thought about it. It just has so much new music to me that I enjoy each issue.

I've always been pleased with Paste. Never had a problem with CD/merch orders, and I only had one issue with problems (the CD had a wierd, staticky drone that grew through the last three tracks, but I reckon it'll be a collector's item someday.)

Had something strange happen, though. I re-subscribed to the magazine around this time last year, and now I can't remember if I subscribed for 6 issues or 12. I checked my Pastemagazine.com account, and it had some nonsense about my subscription ending with Issue 6. I emailed them, asking when mine would run out, and I guess I mentioned I would plan to resubscribe if it had already.

Next day, I get an email saying, "Thank you for your subscription. Your last issue will arrive with #18."

I thought, this is strange. I didn't tell them to resubscribe me, I'm not sure they have my credit card number, and I definitely would've gone for 12 issues had they given me the choice.

I figure there are three possibilities:

1) They took my email as an order and resubscribed me.
2) The email was some cryptic, automatic way of informing me I sprang for 12 last year and it would end with 18.
3) They somehow resubscribed me for free.
4) Nothing happened and I will not be receiving Issue 13. (Is it 13 now? 12?)

Anyhow, the chance that it might be #3 has me keeping my mouth shut for the time being. But now that I know people are receiving theirs, if I don't get the latest issue in a couple weeks, I'm gonna holler.

I'm sure I'd love Paste more if I lived in the USA. I seem(ed) to receive my issues 6 weeks after the rest of the Orchard. dry.gif Oh, well. They're nice people.

It covers the same stuff all the time... that why I think it's weak. I'm sure it's the cats pajamas to some, though. It's probably #5 as far as music magazines go for me... but perhaps I get too many...

It covers the same stuff all the time... that why I think it's weak.

Although they cover great stuff and have occasionally brilliant interviews (usually by Tim Porter), the writing overall is just average. I quit reading it regularly because I was getting ticked off more often than not. And I feel torn about this because I want to support what they're doing (which I guess I do since I occasionally buy stuff from them). They're doing good things and are a great resource, but the redundant/obvious quality of the writing aggravates me (also the typos). And I'm really not a stickler for things like that...they're filling a void and I do like their mag's website. But I guess it just really frustrates me when artists/groups I love are poorly represented. I mean, I should be happy that they're being represented at all, but... They even misquote Over the Rhine lyrics, for crying out loud!

okay...fair enough....I have tried 'Magnet' and another one CMJ new music something or another or some letteres like that, and didn't like either of them. What ranks above Paste for the type of music that it represents? If there is something better out there I am totally unaware.

All IMO...

I totally love Spin and Blender. Cover to cover, I'm a lifer. Any magazine who can go from Brittney to Patton/Zorn collaborations is A-OK with me. There was the "White Stripes on about 10 covers scare" of 2003, but I've recovered... A+

I kinda like Tracks and CMJ NMM. I still do Tracks, but CMJNMM couldn't figure out a simple change of address; so I never resubbed. B+

I'm fond of Alternative Press. It's kinda lame, though, as they cover too much punk and goth. Their first 20 pages are fantastic, though. I rarely read the cover story, but it's good all-in-all. B

Rolling Stone is... um... half good, and half atrocious. They have a good idea, but they screw it up somehow. I used to subscribe, but no longer. It was too much lameness to make it worthwhile to leaf through. C+

Paste falls somewhere in between AP and RS. It's too beige for its own good. B-

I've only read one issue of Magnet... it was Oct 22nd. It was an Elliott Smith interview. He seemed chipper. I was sad, because it was the day I found out he died. Other than that, I have no opinion on Magnet. They seemed cool, though.

There are also other fringe music rags that I pick up every once in a while... Metal Edge (rawk!) or NME or Q or Billboard or Vibe or URB...

No Depression is good. I try to pick it up at the bookstore, but I know I've missed a few issues. There was a really good alternative music magazine called Option a few years back, but it appears to have gone under.

I like Sing Out and Dirty Linen, but they're both very folk-oriented.

No Depression is awesome if you're into alt country. I've never read a bad copy once. The articles are well written and I've been introduced to lots of new music that I would never have been. You might also want to check out Bloodshot Records as well. It's a cool little place in Chicago that caters to the growing alt country scene as well. Who will you find there?

Neko Case and Her Boyfriends
Kelly Hogan and the Pine Valley Cosmonauts
The Yayhoos
Reverend Horton and the Heat
The Waco Brothers

To name a few.

My DVD was in there and was pretty good too. I don't have cable so I don't get to see music videos very often. I haven't watched any of the short films or infomercials yet, but being unmedia saturated as I am, I might actually enjoy it. I actually thought the Norah Jones video was clever and fun. The amorous dancing couple and the randomly dancing ladies was also fun and kept my interest.

Kaki King was amazing!! If anyone is familiar with Phil Keaggy tell me what you think about her performance on the DVD. Sweet guitar-playing wunder-kid.

Don't worry, (uh... posty?) you're not alone. I didn't get a DVD, either. It's a shame, too, because first I read the list of what's ON the DVD and got all excited (MUSIC VIDEOS!! YEAAAAAH!) and THEN I decided to start looking for the DVD itself.

You think they'll send a replacement? I'll try emailing them. Sometimes with these small labels they throw freebies at you to keep you happy. I got three free CDs from SubPop after a late delivery once.

I got my issue 13 of Paste with the CD and DVD on Friday. I've had no problems with any of my orders from them. I did have a broken CD w/ issue 12 and they replaced it quickly (and actually twice, for no reason) and now have the label printed with DO NOT BEND, CD INSIDE.

I usually enjoy the articles, and music CD is always in the CD rotation until the next issue comes out. As for the DVDs - I don't really care. It's about the music for me, the DVD I could do without (especially if there is a price hike involved). I usually buy at least 1 or 2 of the CDs featured on the sampler. It's a great way to hear about some unknown (at least to me) bands.
