What is the first concert you ever went to?

Billy Joel, 1990, on the 'Storm Front' tour.

What is the last concert you went to?

Counting Crows on July 11th, and Ozric Tentacles on July 12th. Two bands about as polar opposite as you can get. smile.gif

What band have you seen the most times? How many times?

Over The Rhine, 5 times.
Dream Theater, Oasis, String Cheese Incident tied at 4 times.

What is the very best concert you've been to?

I don't think I could name one, but a few stand out in my mind:

Deep Banana Blackout, 9/13/01. Two days after 9/11, a couple hundred people packed into a tiny dump in Ann Arbor and witnessed one of the best funk bands on the planet play one of the tightest, heaviest, most fufilling sets I've ever seen. The performance was awesome, but what really made it special was the simultaneous release of tension and energy from everyone, both audience and band...like it was what everyone needed after being glued to CNN for 48 straight hours.

Spock's Beard, August 2000. Only 35 minutes, they opened for Dream Theater. But after seeing them, my musical life would never be quite the same.

U2, Pittsburgh, 5/6/01. I was in the heart for the Detroit show, but their performance in Pittsburgh was significantly more inspired...after waiting years to finally see U2, it was incredibly surreal to finally see a show in person instead of watching on my TV.

Over The Rhine, Dayton, 5/1/04. Partly for the great show, but more because of the wonderful people. I love you guys. (Special mention of 5/2/04, where Karin mentioned my name onstage biggrin.gif)

Dream Theater, 2/19/00...playing their best album, "Scenes From A Memory," in it's entierty...simply stunning.

Rush, AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, Toronto. 7/30/03. Any show with 450,000 people is worth noting. smile.gif

How far have you traveled for the single purpose of going to a concert?

Pittsburgh was about 5 hours and some change, I think that's the farthest.

What band have you not seen that you would go out of your way and pay a ridiculous amount of money to see?

Toto (insert rant here about how music in the states sucks)

My first real concert was The Cranberries with Grant Lee Buffalo as the opener April 1st, 1995.
The last concert I went to was to see Patty Griffin at the Moore the 21st of last month.
I've seen Sky Cries Mary so many times I can't count.
The very best concert I ever went to was Nickel Creek with Mindy Smith as the opener at the Paramount last April/May (?).
The farthest I've traveled for a show was to Kitsap for a music festival. Radiohead was very worth it!
If I could I would like to see OTR perform in my, very big, backyard! I can dream can't I ?!!!

I agree with Russ...this is a great thread.

What is the first concert you ever went to?

::blushes with embarrassment:: John Denver in Manila, of all places, in 1980. Please, don't ask...

What is the last concert you went to?
OTR in Cincy (though my in-laws cheated me out of Junkies here last weekend! angry.gif )

What band have you seen the most times? How many times?
Eric Clapton. Not sure exactly how many times, but at least 10.

What is the very best concert you've been to?
Wow, very tough. I saw Clapton front row once in DC, which was intense. I am also proud to have seen Steveie Ray Vaughan on his last tour. But I guess if I'm forced to make a call, it would be Mark Knopfler at the Fox Theatre in Detroit.

How far have you traveled for the single purpose of going to a concert?
In college, I drove from Cincy to Tampa to see Clapton. We drove down that day and drove home right after. It was made all the better by the fact that we rented a car with a fake ID to drive there!

What band have you not seen that you would go out of your way and pay a ridiculous amount of money to see?

Prince

OTR at The Dame in Lexi

Knoxville to New York City in 2000 to see Over the Rhine tape for the Morning show and play at the Lamb's theatre later that night.

Hey, did you sell those tickets? We were talking about you (and your in-law problem) while standing in line, watching people who wanted to buy tickets without the TicketMaster fees.

(Hi, I'm new. I've just been hanging around and reading for a little while, and I swear I'll get an avatar and introduce myself in the Bio section soon, but this thread was too good to pass up-- I go to concerts all the time).

What is the first concert you ever went to?

Emmylou Harris, as a young child.

What is the last concert you went to?

OTR at The Dame, Los Lobos last night, Iris Dement and Jesse Harris tonight, all Lexington

What band have you seen the most times? How many times?

Bob Dylan, well over 20 since '89.

What is the very best concert you've been to?

Dylan is always first in my heart. I've seen a lot of great shows, and I always love OTR live, too.

How far have you traveled for the single purpose of going to a concert?

4-5 hours, numerous times. Most recently, Dylan in Asheville, about 4.5 or so.

What band have you not seen that you would go out of your way and pay a ridiculous amount of money to see?

This is a real thinker. Maybe it will come to me later.

What is the first concert you ever went to?

Evie. Anyone remember her?

What is the last concert you went to?

OtR at 20th Century Fox (should have gone to see ANI last week. it was free. But I have priorities, you know)

What band have you seen the most times? How many times?

That would be OtR or Phish. Not sure how many somewhere around 10 or so. Maybe 12.

What is the very best concert you've been to?

OtR canal street 5/1/04. I had just the right amount of Jaeger and it was our 5th anniversary. Second (First until 5/1/04) would be Phish 6-11-94 RedRocks because of the spiritual nature and things and what not.

How far have you traveled for the single purpose of going to a concert?

Probably 6-7 hour drive to see OtR

What band have you not seen that you would go out of your way and pay a ridiculous amount of money to see?

umm, hmmm. How about....Over the Rhine. I always feel guilty paying $12 for their tickets like somehow I am stealing because it is soo cheap.

HIJACK:

Luke you got that so right. Lenny and I paid over $300.00 once to see...
(and get this..I don't even remember)
either Rolling Stones or Bruce Springsteen.
Great concerts but as I said..I don't even remember which one cost the bucks. They both were sure enough more than twelve dollars.

And neither concert even came close to my experience at CST in Dayton May 1-2 2004. Sound unbeleivable? True. We were still hundreds of feet from the stage.

I'd pay that in a heartbeat for anOTR concert if I had it.

END HIJACK

What is the first concert you ever went to?

Ichthus '84 (Christian music festival in KY). I was 13, and the first group I saw that weekend was Quickflight.

What is the last concert you went to?

Over the Rhine / Kim Taylor @ The Ark (Ann Arbor)

What band have you seen the most times? How many times?

Over the Rhine. 35+

What is the very best concert you've been to?

can't do a "best", have to give you some of the best that top the list:
Over the Rhine is by far the most satisfying concert I've experienced. (I'd have to think about a specific favorite, but it would be somewhere around the GDBD era or before, and quite a few since. not to mention after 20, memories of specific concerts start to blend with others)
U2 Popmart tour
The Cure - Curiosa festival
Van Halen - reunion tour
L.S.U. - Cornerstone '94(?)
Pixies - reunion tour
Sigur Ros - Takk tour this past fall.
Sixpence None the Richer - Cornerstone '95
Fleming and John - Nashville, early '95??
Def Leppard / Queensryche - fall '88
Sarah Masen @ Calvin's Faith & Music festival '05
Vigilantes of Love (again, too many to recall, mostly around the Blister Soul era)
Innocence Mission

I'll stop now, although there are dozens more I could list as among the best ever...

How far have you traveled for the single purpose of going to a concert?

that would have to be Cornerstone, 11 years in a row, 9.5 hours drive one way.

What band have you not seen that you would go out of your way and pay a ridiculous amount of money to see?

Tom Waits, Radiohead, The Smiths...

Chroma Key (he's never toured yet, but maybe next spring), Pink Floyd, Björk, Jughead, Jelly Jam, Nuno/Mourning Widows/Population-1, Silverchair/Dissociatives, Tenacious D, Zero 7... added: Pearl Jam, any Ken Andrews band & Jude. minor amounts of money: Eisley & Copeland.

What is the last concert you went to?

OTR in Chicago. Before that Depeche Mode last week. smile.gif

What band have you seen the most times? How many times?

OTR, 18 times, I think. Man I've seen a lot of shows since I last posted in this thread. I've seen U2 10 times, with one more show next week.

How far have you traveled for the single purpose of going to a concert?

Flew from Chicago to southern California to see Toto and U2 shows.
