So we have had some one special, whether it was true love, getting rejected or something in between. So what do you think is a great love song?

This is my all time hands down, more romance and expression of love you could put in one song!

" The first time ever I saw your face, I thought the sun rose in your eyes, and the moon and the stars were the gifts you gave to the dark and endless shies my love.
The first time ever I kissed your mouth, I felt the earth move in my hands like the trembling heart of captive bird that was there at my command my love"

"The first Ever I saw Your Face" Roberta Flack

As my experience with romance has been largely marked by rejection (don' pity me, i'm a late bloomer smile.gif ), the love songs I like tend to be the bitter ones I play over and over when I want to feel sorry for myself. Usually, these are written by men/women who have the same experience with rejection, and usually they're written by the Indigo Girls...

Romeo + Juliet (actually written by M. Knophler..but sung WAY better by Amy Ray)

"...but I can't do the talk, like they talk on my TV screen. And I can't do a love song, not the way you sung it to me. I can't do anything, but I would do anything for you. I can't do anything but be in love with you. Yeah, all I do is miss you, and the way it used to be. And all I do is keep the beat: I keep bad, bad company. And all I do is kiss you through the bars of this rhyme, when Julie, I'd do the stars with you anytime."

and...

Ghost

There's a letter on the desktop that I dug out of a drawer
The last truce we ever came to from our adolescent war
And I start to feel the fever of the warm air through the screen
You come regular like seasons shadowing my dreams

The Mississippi's mighty, but it starts in Minnesota
At a place where you can walk across with five steps down
And that's just how you started like a pinprick to my heart
But at this point you rush right through me and I start to drown

There's not enough room in this world for my pain
Signals crossed and love gets lost and time passed makes it plain
Of all my demon spirits I need you the most
I'm in love with your ghost
I'm in love with your ghost

Dark and dangerous like a secret it gets whispered in a hush (don't tell a soul)
And when I wake the things I dreamt about you last night make me blush (don't tell a soul)
When you kiss me like a lover and you sting me like a viper
I go follow to the river play your memory like the piper

And I feel it like a sickness how this love is killing me
But I would walk into the fingers of your fire willingly
Dance the edge of sanity I've never been this close
In love with your ghost

Unknowing captor you'll never know how much you
Pierce my spirit but I can't touch you
Can you hear it a cry to be free
Oh I'm forever under lock and key
As you pass through me

Now I see your face before me I would launch a thousand ships
To bring your heart back to my island as the sand beneath me slips
I burn up in your presence and I know now how it feels
To be weakened like Achilles with you always at my heels

This bitter pill to swallow is the silence that I keep
It poisons me I can't swim free the river is too deep
Though I'm baptized by your touch I am no worse at most
In love with your ghost
_______

Man, I remember being a freshman, and being newly rejected by one Ramsey Mays (who I thought I was TOTALLY in love with), and lying on my bed listeing to "Ghost" over and over...thinking that there could be no more profound pain in the universe than what I was feeling. What a geek. tongue.gif

But it's still a great song...

I can't imagine finding a better love song than Gabriel's "In Your Eyes," and not just because of my avatar.

And i couldn't love you

and the cadences we hear

and if you should ever leave

Title: Answer

I will be the answer
At the end of the line
I will be there for you
Why take the time
In the burning of uncertainty
I will be your solid ground
I will hold the balance
If you can't look down

If it takes my whole life
I won't break, I won't bend
It will all be worth it
Worth it in the end
Because I can only tell you that I know
That I need you in my life
When the stars have all gone out
You'll still be burning so bright

Cast me gently
Into morning
For the night has been unkind
Take me to a
Place so holy
That I can wash this from my mind
And break choosing not to fight

If it takes my whole life
I won't break, I won't bend
It will all be worth it
Worth it in the end
Because I can only tell you that I know
That I need you in my life
When the stars have all gone out
You'll still be burning so bright

Cast me gently
Into morning
For the night has been unkind

One song huh..

I Don't wanna miss a thing - Armageddon soundtrack, performed by Aerosmith
written by Dianne Warren

I could stay awake just to hear you breathing
Watch you smile while you are sleeping
While you're far away and dreaming
I could spend my life in this sweet surrender
I could stay lost in this moment forever
Where every moment spent with you
Is a moment I treasure

I don't wanna close my eyes
I don't wanna fall asleep
'Cause I'd miss you
And I don't wanna miss a thing
'Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream will never do
I'd still miss you
And I don't wanna miss a thing

Lying close to you, feeling your heart beating
And I'm wondering what your dreaming
Wondering if it's me your seeing
And then I kiss your eyes, and thank God we're together
I just wanna stay with you
In this moment forever

I don't wanna close my eyes
I don't wanna fall asleep
'Cause I'd miss you
And I don't wanna miss a thing
'Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream will never do
I'd still miss you
And I don't wanna miss a thing

I don't wanna miss one smile
I don't wanna miss one kiss
Well, I just wanna be with you, right here with you
Just like this
I just wanna hold you close
Feel your heart so close to mine
And just stay here in this moment
For all the rest of time

I don't wanna close my eyes
I don't wanna fall asleep
'Cause I'd miss you
And I don't wanna miss a thing
'Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream will never do
I'd still miss you
And I don't wanna miss a thing

don't get many things
right the first time
in fact, I am told that a lot
now I know all the wrong turns —
the stumbles and falls brought me here

and where was I before the day
that I first saw your lovely face
now I see it everyday
and I know

that I am, I am
I am the luckiest

what if I'd been born
fifty years before you
in a house
on the street where you lived
maybe I'd be outside
as you passed on your bike,
would I know?

and in a wide sea of eyes
I see one pair that I recognize
and I know

that I am, I am
I am the luckiest

I love you more than I have
ever found a way to say to you

next door there's an old man
who lived into his nineties
and one day passed away in his sleep
and his wife, she stayed
for a couple of days and passed away

I'm sorry I know that's a
strange way to tell you
that I know we belong
that I know

that I am, I am
I am the luckiest

Nora Jones recently covered this tune, but in my opinion it's greatest rendition comes from the duet of Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald.

The Nearness of You

Its not the pale moon that excites me
That thrills and delights me, oh no
Its just the nearness of you

It isnt your sweet conversation
That brings this sensation, oh no
Its just the nearness of you

When
youre in my arms and I feel you so close to me
All my wildest dreams come true

I need no soft lights
to enchant me
If youll only grant me the right
To hold you ever so tight
And to feel in the night the
nearness of you.

Does Patty have any love songs?

She seems to write more about breakup...Nobody's Crying...Let Him Fly...Goodbye.....

I guess Icicles and Not Alone would be considered love songs.

Wow, not sure how this one hasn't made the list yet...

Jeff Buckley could sing anything and it would turn out to be a sad love song....

He must have been a big fan of Nina Simone cause I heard him do Strange Fruit as well and it seemed like Nina took over his body and sang the song through him....

Five Room Love Story
(Michael and Margo Timmins )

I met her in a church on a Sunday evening
not late on Saturday night.
She sang Ave Maria a little flat and out of tune
but that's what drew me to her so that's alright.
As she placed a nickel in the basket
that I held before her
I asked her to be my wife.

There's one cardboard heart
for every time you said I love you,
a painted star for every secret that we shared,
the dried lima beans and small plastic birds
because you cared.

I hear their talk and I watch them swap
their old black and whites.
Bitter and beaten they talk of life's cheatin'
like old boxers comparing scars.
All I remember is a smile at the top of
every working morning
and a shoulder always willing and able
and all those nights that we'd spend just sitting
and talking around our kitchen table.

And there's one cardboard heart
for every time you said I love you,
a painted star for every secret that we shared,
the dried lima beans and small plastic birds
because you cared.

Five rooms made stronger
by the breaking and the healing
of the two hearts they protected within.
And now one heart left aching,
pasting and painting
these walls with memories of all that has been.

And there's one cardboard heart
for every time you said I love you,
A painted star for every secret that we shared,
the dried lima bean and small plastic birds
because you cared.

and of a lost love...

Beeswing
Richard Thompson

I was nineteen when I came to town
They called in the Summer of Love
They were burningbabies, burning flags
The Hawks against the Doves

I took a job in the Steamie
Down on Cauldrum Street
I fell in love with a laundry girl
Was working next to me

She was a rare thing
Fine as a beeswing
So fine a breath of wind might blow her away
She was a lost child
She was running wild, she said
As long as there's no price on love, I'll stay
And you wouldn't want me any other way

Brown hair zig-zag round her face
And a look of half-surprise
Like a fox caught in the headlights
There was an animal in her eyes

She said, young man, O can't you see
I'm not the factory kind
If you don't take me out of here
I'll surely lose my miind

She was a rare thing
Fine as a beeswing
So fine a breath of wind might blow her away
She was a lost child
She was running wild, she said
As long as there's no price on love, I'll stay
And you wouldn't want me any other way

We busked around the market towns
And picked fruit down in Kent
And we could tinker lamps and pots
And knives wherever we went

And I said that we might settle down
Get a few acres dug
Fire burning in the hearth
And babies on the rug

She said O man, you foolish man
It surely sounds like hell
You might be lord of half the world
You'll not own me as well

She was a rare thing
Fine as a beeswing
So fine a breath of wind might blow her away
She was a lost child
She was running wild, she said
As long as there's no price on love, I'll stay
And you wouldn't want me any other way

We was camping down the Gower one time
The work was pretty good
She thought we shouldn't wait for frost
And I thought maybe we should

We were drinking more in those days
And tempers reached a pitch
Like a fool I let her run
With the rambling itch

Last I hear she's sleeping out
Back on Derby beat
White Horse in her hip pocket
And a wolfhound at her feet

And they say she even marriend once
A man named Romany Brown
But even a Gypsy caravan
Was too much settliing down

And they say her flower is faded now
Hard weather and hard booze
But maybe that's just hte price you pay
For the chains you refuse

She was a rare thing
Fine as a beeswing
And I miss her more than ever words could say
If I could just taste
All of her wildness now
If I could hold her in my arms today
Then I wouldn't want her any other way

OK, you knew it was coming, but...

"Stop Loving You" by Toto. Yes, it has bittersweet sentimental value. It's also a great song.

At Last - Etta James

At last
My love has come along
My lonely days are over
And life is like a song

Ohh yeah yeah
At last
the skies above are blue
My heart was wrapped up in clover
The night I looked at you

I found a dream, that I could speak to
A dream that I can call my own
I found a thrill to press my cheek to
A thrill that I have never known

Ohh yeah yeah…
You smile, you smile
oh And then the spell was cast
And here we are in heaven
for you are mine....
At Last

A Case of You - Joni Mitchell

Just before our love got lost you said
I am as constant as a northern star
And I said, constantly in the darkness
Where's that at?
If you want me I'll be in the bar

On the back of a carton coaster
In the blue TV screen light
I drew a map of Canada
Oh Canada
With your face sketched on it twice

Oh you're in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter and so sweet
Oh I could drink a case of you darling
And I would still be on my feet
Oh I would still be on my feet

Oh I am a lonely painter
I live in a box of paints
I'm frightened by the devil
And I'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid
I remember that time that you told me, you said
Love is touching souls
Surely you touched mine
Cause part of you pours out of me
In these lines from time to time

Oh you're in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter and so sweet
Oh I could drink a case of you darling
Still I'd be on my feet
I would still be on my feet

I met a woman
She had a mouth like yours
She knew your life
She knew your devils and your deeds
And she said
Go to him, stay with him if you can
But be prepared to bleed

Oh but you are in my blood you're my holy wine
You're so bitter, bitter and so sweet
Oh I could drink a case of you darling
Still I'd be on my feet
I would still be on my feet

Hey Baby Hey - Greg Brown

the sea was rollin' in slate gray
I looked at you and I looked away
I was cryin'
because I was happy

I didn't want you to see
I was afraid of such mystery
and afraid of losing
so afraid of losing

later on on a balcony
we had a good talk and we felt free
I was comin' to you from far away
light was dim but you showed me the way
in your arms all I could say was
hey baby hey baby hey baby hey

my heart was torn I'd made up my mind
I'd keep to myself and just be kind
and need nothing
just need nothing

love my folks my kids my friends
and make it on through to the end
no more suffering
over loving

you get to me like old time religion did
in my heart when I was a kid
you're sweet gospel music to my ears
you know how to ease all my fears
and from my heart to yours all I can say is
hey baby hey baby hey baby hey

and as we go on through the deal I
I know that we won't always feel
real wonderful
life ain't like that

but I want to stay right by your side
check out the view enjoy the ride
together
with all our loved ones

I want to plant a little garden with you now
take care of a piece of the earth somehow
and tend it when we're old and gray and
try to straighten up and say, well,
I'm so glad to see you today
hey baby hey baby hey baby hey

--------------------
We're alive all of a sudden, for sure now, yes, ready or not here we come. Stronger and weaker, bluer and blacker, happier and clearly more sad-we are being swept along toward the end of our lives and there is no point in looking back just yet. Ride.

A Case of You - Joni Mitchell

This song...man.

Every time I hear this it's an experience. I have to just clear my mind and listen. I don't know of many others who have so *perfectly* captured what it feels like to be crippled by unrequited love. I get butterflies just hearing this song mentioned.
